I've been all about psychological thrillers lately and this one was amazing. It kept me riveted from the first page to the last.Dealing with a childhood of horrific abuse and neglect and the death of her twin, Elizabeth loses it completely and ends up in a psychiatric ward. Full of delicious twists and shocking revelations, I can't wait to read more from this author.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written, intense psychological thriller. I read this book in one sitting and it was very refreshing to read a book that went beyond just trying to figure out the "twist". This author gave great insight into mental illness and how childhood trauma can affect a person years after the fact. I grew to care about these characters and what happened to them as the story unfolded. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
Psychological? Yes. Thriller? Not really. Not to say it isn't a good book, but I wouldn't put it in the thriller category. It's a pretty brutal look at what happens to a person when they suffer extreme trauma at an early age (parental neglect, starvation, sexual abuse). Elizabeth is in a psychiatric facility after she tries to kill herself after her twin sister's death, and she has to come to grips with her history regain her memory of what happened to her sister. To give too many details would be to ruin the book, so I don't want to go into too much detail. The only negative I found in the book was Thomas, his character wasn't fleshed out enough. Elizabeth claims to be in love with him, but they didn't seem to have much of a relationship. Add to the fact that he was in college to become a youth pastor, and Elizabeth didn't even believe in God and they didn't make much sense. I'd be shocked if any church would hire a pastor whose spouse was an atheist.
Very much enjoyed this book! This is my absolute favorite genre and this one did not disappoint! Love books with twists and, to be honest, I usually figure them out fairly quickly (just from having so much exposure to so many mystery/ thrillers over the years, I guess you become sort of an expert lol) and while I did figure out the twist before it was revealed, it was only shortly before. That is a win in my book! Great read, very much recommend!
I'm only almost done with this book: I've read through the last chapter, but I'm only halfway through the epilogue. I really like this book, except for the last chapter and epilogue. The author keeps the reader guessing all the way through as to what's actually happening, and what's aspects of the main character's mental illness, but the last chapter kind of stands the whole story on its head, and it really calls into question what the reality and the true situation and circumstances really are! I would say that it would merit a whole different book, but I don't think that a second book would be tolerable :-( . That last chapter puts a whole new spin on things, and although it may be realistic (well, maybe not after all), and makes, to me, and unacceptable and to the story. Too bad. I think it would've been better with a totally different ending!I actually finished reading the epilogue. It made the book end with a different feeling – sort of recognizing that the story wasn't really over. Had the author wanted that ending, she really should've written an entirely different book. This ending leaves the reader feeling cheated :-(. In some ways there's a new story, but the main story has not ended. I don't know, the book itself would have been really good and wonderful had the main story been tied up and completed instead of having been totally changed! I feel as if the author really wanted to end the book on a question – in order to leave the reader wondering, but at the same time she had an entirely different idea. _Phantom Limb_ couldn't make up its mind what character the main twin wanted to be and what problems she was fighting with. It would've been a satisfying book, but in the end it was a disappointment.
I just read this book over two sittings and couldn't put it down but still didn't feel it warranted 5 stars. It was short and often gripping and yet in parts it seemed so long. I wanted to know what would be revealed next but there were parts of the book where that seemed to take forever and where I had usually guessed anyway. But when it was good it was very very good. Moved along at a pace and with characters developed well enough for the purpose. It is written in the first person and other characters are not deeply described, but then that is how the protagonist sees them, I guess.Certainly the writing was succinct and there was a clear view of who everyone was. I read a lot of crime fiction and am often having to flip back and forth to remind myself who is who in the enormous cast of characters. Not here; it was very well laid out.I'm not sure it could be described as a thriller, though. Psychological definitely but not a thriller.
