Our media casts these modern day leaders as villians, against everything good and American. Maybe they don't want to be Americans, at least Americans from the United States. It seems like our foreign policy hasn't been working so well down there and the people haven't been complaining so much. Except for the CIA inspired riots and rebellions that took place in Venezuela by those who are against Hugo Chavez (God rest his soul), for instance, the average Venezuelan was happy that he decided to look out for his people rather than the best interests of our corporate higher ups who are there to use and take what they think belongs to them. Whether you agree or disagree with these four leaders, what's good for citizens of the United States may not always be good for the people of Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil and Venezuela.

In this book you will find the truth about some government leaders in South America.Inside you can find that some leaders that are portrait as monsters are great people who are working for the good of their countries. The right-wing emperors, supported by the corrupted Global Media and some dull allies, create the distortion of these governments with their lies, their manipulations and their lack of humanity. Here you will find the truth about Chavez, Morales, Castro and Correa. The tremendous power of the US to bring down these democratic elected presidents is out of its mind.Capitalism is destroying the world, our only hope is to turn and see these leaders, follow their examples, and create a better and possible world.US citizens must read this book, also Latin Americans, the empire and they allies are brainwashing us to became part of this terrible New World Order.

Lemme tell you right off the bat that this book has nothing to do with those Johnny Depp movies or the Disneyland ride. If that's what you're looking for, you're totally in the wrong place. The next thing you need to know is that the author, Tariq Ali, is a leftie. So leftie, in fact, that he was purportedly the inspiration for the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" because of his man-the-barricades philosophy during the 60's! Since then, though, his worldview has mellowed slightly. What I like about the author is how literate and well-educated he is. Of Pakistani descent, he frequently writes about the Middle East and the Subcontinent from a progressive angle: he is one of the editors at the "New Left Review." But he's not so left that he's unbalanced or unreadable. This particular book is a look at the extent and the causes of the popular leftist revolutions that we have seen in Latin America in the last ten years or so, especially the doings of Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales, the pro-coca, pro-nationalization, pro-indigenous rights, anti-U.S. president of Bolivia. Castro, meanwhile, lurks in the background throughout.Ali obviously approves of these developments, but not in a fawning way, I think. The book is more of a report on what's been happening rather than a tendentious call-to-arms. Nevertheless, statements bordering on the pro-Marxist are common, such as these:"What Castro, Chavez, and Morales have understood is that strength lies in unity . . . . Evo Morales . . . won the argument and the Presidency but the elite . . . does not yet feel demoralized and crushed. . . . It is vital that the elites are skifully detached from their base by a set of inclusive measures that benefit the bulk of the population." (p. 96)As for the fact that the neo-liberal ideas of the Chicago School ultimately lifted Chile's standard of living to the point where, as of my writing, it is now, per capita, the highest in Latin America, the author dismisses that by pointing out that that was only possible because all the troublesome people who knew better had been liquidated: i.e., Friedman's reforms were "easy" because of Pinochet's "bloody political cleansing." (p. 33)Statements like this seem contradictory: could these "disappeared people," these Allende supporters, really have known better if it turns out that their opponents, the "Chicago Boys" were the ones with the plan that ultimately did reduce crime, corruption, and inflation, and raise standards in health care, education, and government, and restore democracy?Presumably, Ali would respond to this that those who were crushed by the Dirty War were morally superior full stop, even if they were wrong in practical terms. But this is to venture into territory where the author doesn't really enter. In short, this book is a serviceable but not mind-blowing treatment of the subject.Something else you should know: the book is divided into two parts. The first part it Ali's summary of what's been happening vis-Ã -vis socialism in Latin America. The second half of the book are appendices related to this, such as the full text of Hugo's speech at the UN in 2005, and various letters and essays on the subject.By the way, it's an independent publisher, and I found the binding to be rather wonky. In fact, it fell apart before I was halfway through and I had to have it rebound.

This book is great if you want the facts and truth from the actors in the show. Instead from fox news or people trying to horn swaggle the reader or viewer. Freedom isnt just for americans or western civilisation. Tariq ali lets us see inside the revolution from first person view. This book tells and shows how america influences and their proxies, fellow capitalist pigs and lackeys will do anything. After reading this book you should get the feeling that america isnt the only country that is home to the brave, and that every country like america will fight to remain the land of the free. Other countries have aspirations too. Dont be an obstacle.

There are so many reviews I'll keep mine short and basic. Also make sure you read the first in the series before looking at anything here! This book was so much fun to read. It picks up after the first and has Lara Jean and Peter in some turmoil. There is a lot of turmoil throughout a good portion of this book! I don't want to give anything away but the one major thing that is in this book is the surfacing of a video from a certain ski trip. This is a major factor in this book. There is also the chance to meet another of her letter guys! Also, Gen is up to her tricks again it would seem but I'll let you see what's up there on your own!So this book is one with a good bit of teen angst but these teens are very good kids for the most part so it's not one that has terrible influences aplenty. This makes it appropriate for a good range of reading ages. It's a fun book that might make you happy, sad, mad, and any other range of emotion but in the end it's a feel good book that just makes you fall more in love with the characters you've learned to care for in the first book.

I HAD to read the next installment after To All the Boys I've Loved Before finished the way it did. I thought the pace was slower than its predecessor but I still enjoyed it as much as the first one.Lara Jean wants Peter back. She will go for it despite her worries about putting her heart on the line and the possibility of getting hurt. You have to admire someone who decides to overcome her fear of being abandoned. So what does Lara Jean do? She writes a letter to Peter K but this time she takes it to Peter K herself. Gladly, he is home when Lara Jean comes knocking. This is when I start thinking that everything is going to be ok now. They are together, what can go wrong? One answer, Genevieve. Genevieve keeps on using Peter for who knows what. She keeps on calling him and the worst part is that Peter answers every single time. Yes, Lara Jean knows Peter cares for Genevieve but at the beginning, she is more accepting of this situation until she is not.To make the waters even murkier, another boy she wrote a letter to is back. You might remember the tiny sneak peak we got in the first book about John Ambrose McClaren, well he's back in full force. He's the grandson of Story, an awesome lady with amazing stories to tell who's at the retirement house where Lara Jean is volunteering. John Ambrose is everything Lara Jean wants from a boyfriend and he even helps her out when she needs it during the USO party she throws at the retirement house ( I would love to see this in the next movie. Their scene together was beautiful). John Ambrose McClaren is dreamy but he is not Peter K and sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants.I was torn between both guys which is weird because I was Peter K team all the way in To All the Boys I've Loved Before. Yet, I was very happy with Lara Jean's decision and I was happy she made good choices too.I thought the book portrayed a nice relationship between the siblings. They had an awesome relationship with their father (I adored him) which was a nice change since most books have horrible family dynamics.Kitty, as well as Stormy, gave this book the sassiness it needed.Cliffhanger: No4/5 Fangs

I really liked the first book and rushed to buy this one only to be disappointed. For starters, Lara Jean spends the whole story being insecure about her boyfriend’s ex Genevieve or wondering it he wants to have sex with her (Lara). He is a guy so yes, stop asking. That is seriously 90% of the book. She became the crazy girlfriend who kept bringing up his ex. Now, Peter did run to his ex’s aid too much and the grand reason he was such a necessity to Gen was just lame. The ex used a mildly upsetting scenario (no one died or was dying) to keep Peter on the hook and he was too dumb to realize it. So he was to blame for a bit of Lara’s insecurity but it was pretty clear that the author had no real story in mind for this book by how many times Lara questioned the same things over and over. The author admitted this was written at fan request just to explore John Ambrose, a pointless addition, and it showed. What I truly hated was the whole “sex tape” story line. Without consent from either Peter or Lara Jean, they were filmed making out in a hot tub on a school trip. Lara fully covered by some old lady type of nightgown and Peter in a bathing suit. The recording was then shared with their entire class. Against the law, I work at a school, Genevieve would have been suspended if not also charged. Nothing happens to her. Peter knows and remains her lackey, which should have resulted in his permanent kick to the curb by Lara, but she ends up shrugging it off because she realizes he and Gen and she and Gen have a connection. Really? Um, no. The girl was a two book mean girl, she deserved a tell off if not a slap, not unconfronted forgiveness. So dumb. On top of that, Lara gets sex shamed for starring in this tape like it was her choice. Yes the student reaction is sadly the norm, but the teacher who shamed her for not seeming like the type of girl to do this sort of thing should have been reported and fired because a girl kissing a boy is not a bad choice nor is making out with one, nor did Lara choose to be taped. Worse was Lara’s dim father who doesn’t seem to parent much telling her to make better choices because of course she knew Gen was a jealous perv taping them with a mind to distribute her work. Seriously? A woman wrote this? Dad should have gone through the roof and demanded the school do something since this happened on a school trip and was it was being distributed at school, not acted like it was in anyway Lara’s fault. I get that the author wanted to show that Peter as a boy had an easier time of it than Lara as a girl, but the teacher and father reaction was just way off. I was done with her dad as a character after that. This whole book seemed to be proof Lara and Peter were better off apart, as both had good reason to dump the other for good, but they find their way back to each and into a third, better written but still not as good as the first book, novel. My best advice is to read the first book and make up your own story for what comes next.

I would recommend this book if you're interested in growing and would like an overview of what it entails. But if you're someone who is currently growing than this book will offer little helpful information to you. It is extremely redundant, literally whole paragraphs repeated at several points throughout the book. It also says very little about hydroponic growing; it is definitely more soil focused. There are much more detailed and helpful resources available that offer advice and solutions to problems when growing. Simply put, this book doesn't have enough information for you to have a successful grow.

I am a first time grower. I followed the instructions to the letter. Being first time grower it turned out fine.

It's okay. Nothing you can't find with Google.

Very good starter. Went from simple basics through the entire process. Very informative and contained good references for additional information.

Not very well written. Some concepts are repeated multiple times for some reason. No real facts, measurements or numbers.

A lot of great tips. Can't wait to put them to use!!! Very easy to read and understand. Thank you.

Awsome book. I am learning alot from this.

My State recently passed Medical Marijuana laws and I want to be ready for when we can grow our own. But I plan on growing outside and there's very little info on it. Just that you can do it.That's not helpful at all. I want to know more about soil types, about climate zones too. Then there's no info on fertilizers, no info of pests, insects, or fungus molds that might attack outside plants. So for me, this book was a waste.

This book could have been so much more. What an important and currently pressing topic Alex Kotlowitz chose to write about. The homicide and violent crime rate in Chicago is staggering. Kotlowitz says that in the past 20 years in Chicago, 14,033 people have been killed and roughly 60,000 have been wounded by gunfire. The vast majority of the killings happen in a small space in Chicago--but the violence has been spreading out all over the city. National and regional papers report of the killings daily.I've read another book by Kotlowitz and have found him to be a very gifted writer. He's an artist with words. He has a very smooth writing style and uses words to paint pictures in a way that few others can. I know little about what's going on in Chicago, so I was excited to learn more--especially through the writing of Kotlowitz. But this book felt flat.During a summer in Chicago, Kotlowitz chronicles the life of African American male teenagers and some men past their prime previously involved in gang violence. In only a few months, we learn of many gruesome murders and lives ruined by the violence.Kotlowitz seems to blame the failures of his main characters on the society that they've grown up in. Even when adopted out and moved to the suburbs, Kotlowitz's characters return to a life of crime. It's almost, as if, the main characters in the book are destined to kill others. Robbing people seems to be in their blood and hurting others seems to be the fault of the character's lapse of judgment, society, or something else. But Kotlowitz doesn't seem to rest blame in the murderer or perpetrator himself. The murderer or perpetrator is portrayed as a victim and his family as victims too.By the way--why aren't women included as characters in this book? Do they not perpetrate the violent crime? If they don't, then why not?The book is entirely predictable. In fact, it's so predictable that it's absurd. We're meant to see that the murders in jail actually are good people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe that's true. I don't know. But it's hard to believe that every murderer followed in the book has a good heart and is rather blameless. I would have liked to know more about the character's upbringing, their experiences in school, and the rest of their life. Two paragraphs--or even two pages--about any of these topics doesn't suffice. The violence in Chicago results from complex matters and it would have been nice for Kotlowitz to consider and develop each of the potential causes for the high crime rate. Glossing over the lives of the main characters and their families doesn't serve the topic justice.Perhaps it's worthwhile to read a few chapters of this book. But if you want to learn more about what's going on in Chicago, I'd suggest reading another source.

Excellent book on the effects of violence in Chicago. Generally each chapter introduces us to a new person/family touched by violence (either losing a family member to violence or having a family member commit violence or committing violence themselves and trying to come to terms with what they've done) though there are a few people who have several chapters devoted to their stories (again dealing with violence that they've witnessed, experienced, or committed).Kotlowitz writes with powerful prose, really showing the humanity of these people and the very challenging lives they lead and often horrific experiences they, well, experiences. Some people might say Kotlowitz is making excuses for bad behavior, but I think he is really showing the societal factors that surround people. So many children randomly killed, so many children/young people killing or hurting others, so many petty squabbles escalating into death. Kotlowitz shows how people struggle with being defined or stereotyped as gangbangers or drug dealers--the assumptions mothers deal with when a child is killed that "he must have been in a gang or dealing drugs." Sometimes they were, sometimes not. Either way the person gone was still a person.Though some of the people profiled make it, there aren't many happy endings in the book. Some seem promising. Some are very sad. It just felt like a gut punch to me, reading about the things people live with and through. I can't imagine having the strength to endure. Just an excellent book. It would be hard to read this and still dismiss Chicago's violence as just faceless black on black crime (or whatever talking point it is today) that "those people" need to deal with (or as a justification to treat them all like animals and criminals.) These are people struggling with poverty, economic depression in their neighborhoods, mass incarceration, death, and still most manage to keep on living, despite the loss and sadness. I can't recommend it enough.

Difficult book to review because Alex Kotlowitz is an amazing reporter of urban life and he once again brings empathy and closeness to American cities...but I never quite connected with it. I have read "There Are No Children Here," and that's a classic of the type.Maybe it's empathy overload, or just being so depressed by it all, but I felt like this could have been a 20K magazine article and accomplished the same thing. Here, I just felt overwhelmed and sad. I put it aside and then didn't come back to it for days, and found myself skimming and forgetting where I was. So that's all the downside. The "up" is that these are powerful, meaningful stories of people in dire situations - and many of them made bad choices and don't deserve much sympathy. But, I can't help but feel shame and regret for how this country has let all this happen without ever coming up with even a tepid effort at a solution. This is a powerful book despite my personal disconnect.

The victims of crime aren't the only victims of "the system".In his years of documenting "inner city" Chicago, Alex Kotlowitz has met many people. Here he chronicles the summer of 2013 by ticking off the days, with an account of the life of one individual or family, mostly colored by their experiences with the criminal justice system and with gang culture.Although the events described are more than five years past, anyone without their own experience with poverty or helping those in poverty would do well to read "An American Summer". Life in the "inner city" can be toxic, and anyone who votes should be thinking about how our government often rewards prosecutors and others who punish some of the victims and how, if this treatment leads to hopelessness and recidivism, we're not even reducing crime as a result.
