About the Author

Joseph Kerman was a leading musicologist, music critic, and music educator from the 1950s to the 2000s. He reshaped our understanding and appreciation of Western classical music with his first book, Opera as Drama (1956), to his last, Opera and the Morbidity of Music (2008), including his studies on Bach, Beethoven, William Byrd, concertos, and more. He was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, where he served two terms as chair of the Music Department. He wrote Listen together with his wife, Vivian Kerman.Gary Tomlinson taught at the University of Pennsylvania before moving to Yale University in 2011, where he is now the John Hay Whitney Professor and Director of the Whitney Humanities Center. A former MacArthur Fellow, he has authored books on Claudio Monteverdi, Renaissance musical culture, the opera, and the singing rituals of the Aztecs and Incas. His latest book, A Million Years in Music, describes the evolutionary emergence of music. Tomlinson and Kerman worked together on five editions of Listen before Joseph Kerman died in 2014 as this edition went to press, just shy of his ninetieth birthday. Teaching was at the heart and soul of Kerman's musical career, and it remains so in Tomlinson's. Between them, their wide-ranging course offerings have encompassed harmony and ear-training, opera, world music, popular music, and interdisciplinary studies, including seminars in music history, criticism, anthropology, and―many times over―Introduction to Music for non-majors.

Great material---just make sure you realize that the rental does not have the CDs. I've had to use YouTube and Spotify, which is not awful but occasionally the recordings are not exact.

It was super easy to return through my school's Amazon return system. The shipping was really fast and the book was in decent quality. It was so much better than having to buy the book myself. I definitely recommend renting the book from Amazon, it helps save a lot of money! They give you a due date and you just have to return it by that time and you should be fine!

The (rented) book did not come with an access code for the online listening materials. In order to gain access to them (which you will need to do if you want to get past the first three chapters), you have to then go on the website and purchase the e-textbook AGAIN for $50. It's still a little less expensive than buying the physical textbook new (I don't know if you can use the access code for a used one or if you'll even get one), but I'd recommend just going to the website of the publisher and buying access to the e-textbook there.

Really confused. If you rent a book, you need to be able to read it or there is no sense to rent it. It says on the front of book if we break shrink-wrap it is not returnable.

Used this book for my Musicology class at the University of Miami. I didn't actually need it, the class was based almost entirely off the professor's lectures. It did include some neat historical information, but otherwise I'd say its very much a standard textbook.

Amazing book. Will change your life.Actually the book was quite nice. Didn't need it for the online class that I took online, just Google'd everything.

I had to spend more money getting the songs for listening tests. If I knew this I would I have the item directly from the publishers. The seller should have been more descriptive with this item and exactly what the Cd it came with had contained.

Used it for my music class got an A so I can say great!! It came in good condition and I has no problems mine came with the disc but there was no need for it in my class
