Liana Werner-Gray is an advocate for natural healing using a healthy diet and lifestyle. I'm in my sixties, and that means I've had about six decades of eating the wrong diet, including wayyyyy too much sugar. While that kept me from going nuts as I negotiated the stress and work overload of being a teacher, it had to stop for my health. For the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE, I have found a way to face the things that have kept me overweight and undernourished: Sugar, caffeine and processed carbs. I heard Ms. Werner-Gray on a podcast last spring. I bought this book. The idea of eating pure, real food mulled in my mind and heart for a few months until one morning in July, I woke up and knew I could change -- or face the rest of my life like so many Americans, heading for disease. This prospect of dying with my legs up in the air is not for me. So, I pictured my life as a cupboard. I completely cleaned mine out! The first two days, I repeated a hundred times to myself: "There is nothing I wouldn't do to be healthy" and then totally enjoyed another juice. I had a migraine the second day from leaving caffeine in the dust, and I soaked in the pain a while to impress upon myself that being sick is not fun. Then I went to bed and woke up on the third day absolutely surprised at how good I felt and how much I just wanted good, real food. Now I wake up every, single morning wanting my shockingly beautiful, magenta-colored beet-orange-lemon-ginger-carrot-celery-parsley juice ... then have a sweet, bright, icy glass of spinach or kale with date, chia and sunflower in a spring green smoothie for lunch. For dinner, I eat foods that are colorful, alive and full of joy. My plate looks like a picture in a magazine. I take a walk everyday, listen to The Earth Diet podcasts (oh, my goodness, they are so excellent, informational, encouraging, hopeful and forgiving, and Liana's voice is so sweet and easy to listen to) and I also enjoy bouncing a few ten-minute sessions on my rebounder (Google that one. I was literally amazed at how many ways the rebounder helps the body and brain and WHY it's so good for us.) I buy organic food, have watched "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" and "Hungry for Change" a bunch of times for the inspiring, incredible information, and with all that enjoyable, exciting stuff going into my head, I simply have no interest or time for the Standard American Diet (SAD). I appreciate my Vitamix Blender and my Breville $99 juicer every day. These are excellent, important tools that make a pleasant difference. If all this sounds expensive, remember that so are cancer, diabetes and heart disea$e. In eight weeks, I have lost 16 pounds effortlessly, my nails and cuticles are naturally healthy for the first time, no more dizziness or ears pounding, no more headaches, I can get a deep breath anytime I want one, and in only another seven pounds, I will be the weight I was when I was 25. I feel lightened and enlightened. I've bought this book seven times plus once on iBooks. I keep finding people, loved ones and strangers, who need it as badly as I do. I have ordered another hard copy today, as the photographs, recipes and organization are as inspiring as Liana's incredible information. It's my coffee table book! I never knew food was so powerful. I never knew I was, either! If you wish to change your health or just validate what you're already doing for yourself and for your family, you will find a light bulb glowing above your precious head in this book by Liana Werner-Gray.
I checked this out at the library then downloaded the Kindle version when it was on promo at the beginning of the year. I have listened to Liana Werner-Gray for about 6 months on Hay House Radio before reading this book. I enjoyed what she had to say and her view on nutrition. I didn't realize her views also encompassed so much of lifestyle. I found a lot of the advice and recipes informative and easy to understand. Liana provides numerous resources at the end of the book. She also states that originally this book was self-published because she had such a desire to get the information out into the world, which I think is admirable. Based on customer testimonials, Liana mentions numerous ailments and diseases that eating whole, unprocessed foods from nature can help heal. She never states any backed medical claims, which I think is only fair. The only part I didn't appreciate was the 7-day cleanse style diets (including mono meals) because they seemed too-low in calorie, in my opinion. I am not a trainer or nutritionist, but as someone who is used to intense workouts (plyometrics, weights, yoga) and working 8-12 hour days, it just doesn't seem realistic to sustain on a net calorie less than 1200. Overall, the book is full of common sense, easy to understand whole foods recipes, and a simple format.
I was so excited to order this book, when I heard Liana on her radio talk show. To me this book really shows just how simple it is to live a more conscious & healthy life style. I've never considered myself much of a cook, let alone a vegan one. Being a lover of chocolate, my first receipe I tried was the "Raw Three-ingredient Chocolate." What a delightful surprise, & so easy to make & healthy all in one! Im in love! So, instead of rolling them into balls, I made hearts. Perfect timing for Valentines Dayâ¤
LOVE IT!!! best book I ever got , want to buy for all my close family and friends. Also the author is soooo nice and emails reply to me. Very good book def recommend it!!! This is exactly the way to live , so confusing with all these diets out there Paleo and more but this is what your looking for. A healthy way of life back to the natural.
Reading this book for the second time since finding out that I have high cholesterol and high triglycerides. She has what seems to be a simple way of eating. I also think it requires less cooking than many diets. I'm going to try as many of her suggestions as I can incorporate into my diet. I may not be able to do all organic, but hopefully just adding more fruits, veges, etc. will help. I would recommend that we follow her lead and go back to food that is not processed.
While the information and recipes are very good, there is some repetition of information, so the book could have been a bit smaller than it is. Having looked into many herbal remedies and other healing protocols, I was able to take the information in this book to heart; and though this author is very opinion-based in her presentation, I have the knowledge base to support the claims that she may seem to be making in an arbitrary way. The healthy protocols she presents are efficient and the recipes are wonderful, though some have rather involved steps, banking on a previous recipe to complete a more complex dinner dish. She has some very simple and basic recipes as well and I find them to be very diverse to satisfy many tastes. Over-all, I found this book and its recipes to be very beneficial.
This book made me think so much about many things I had taken for granted, like toothpaste. The recipes are mostly easy to follow, and the insights encouraging. I haven't found a dessert yet which tempted me, so I'm sticking to smoothies and fresh fruit! The chocolate desserts are very grainy, as is sadly the recipe for homemade almond milk (the figs never broke down enough regardless of how long I pureed them), unfortunately. However, the juices, salads, and main veggie recipes are wonderful!
It is good but some of the recipes have too much sugar, and I am against that.
