After reading enough True Crime books, especially when they’ve been written by a particular author, you slowly become anesthetized; or to use simpler terminology you’re rendered physically insensible regarding how far an individual’s level of depravity can reach. After reading almost two dozen books where the murderer[s] have gone to extraordinary lengths to cover up their unbelievable heinous acts towards men and women, you reach a point where almost nothing they might do would be surprising. However, in this outing, the author of this book, Jack Rosewood, gives his readers a detailed, well-researched look at Wayne Williams, an individual whose dozens of victims, mostly black male children, started to disappear off the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. Given this specific trait of the victims, naturally the anxiety which arose gave the black community and the nation, the idea that these innocent children were being target by a xenophobic individual. These acts of violence became know as the Atlanta Child Murders, and it took an army of trained law enforcement individuals from a multitude of organizations to ultimately apprehend and arrest this mindboggling murderer. And just like the television program “You Are There” [1953-1971] hosted by Walter Cronkite, Mr. Rosewood allows his readers to observe the new investigatory techniques using fiber evidence [simply thin filaments of material that can be either organic or synthetic] that an individual had been at a specific location, and the profiling of individuals in order to identify the likely suspect[s] to a crime. However, Wayne Williams, who instead of his appearance, seemingly to be an unfashionable and socially inept and boringly studious individual; in reality had been the sadistic serial killer they’ve been looking for. And as in all of his books, the author endeavors to tell his readers what had been the possible reason for the transformation from a nerdy child into one of the most copious serial murderers of blacks this nation has known. For giving me and his readers another shocking, page-turning book, I’m giving Mr. Rosewood the 5 STARS he’s garnered.

But I remember this. I'm from Atlanta and lived through this time and before it and after it. This book could've included much, much more. I'm sure Ann Rule would've been much more descriptive. There were entire paragraphs that includes only one sentence. This didn't have to be the case. It seems the writer took newspaper articles written at that time and summarized them. The articles at that time included more information than this book. It was interesting, and for someone reading about this who is not from here, it will be more interesting than I found it to be. I'm sorry to not be more positive in my review. This really could've been a much longer book. The families of the victims and information about the victims and their lives would be been a caring thing to include. The losses of the lives and the impact of the losses would be been good to include. Feeling empathy for them...

kindle unlimited, normally don't single book, do the collection volumes and so on, just so much to read AND except for him, don't read true crime etc, as the writer & stories are predominantly gross out city {and Ii can talk about dead bodies etc while eating, so not me}, but freebie day and wanted to see what it was about, yet another book from the prince of gruesome. From the summer of 1979 through the spring of 1981, Atlanta, Georgia was held under siege by a serial killer and dozens of victims started to appear. The series of murders, which became known as the “Atlanta Child Murders case,” gripped the city of Atlanta with fear and shocked the nation because most of the victims were children. The fact that the victims were all black and mostly male caused many in Atlanta’s black community to fear that their children were being targeted by a racist conspiracy. In this true crime book you will read about how the Atlanta Child Murders case put a city under siege and how a task force of law enforcement officers from several different agencies eventually captured the killer. You will follow the investigation as the police use what was at the time fairly new techniques of criminal profiling and fiber evidence to capture and convict the killer. For many around the country, once the killer was arrested, it was difficult to accept. The killer was a young, nerdy-looking man named Wayne Williams. To many people his background didn’t seem to indicate he was a serial killer, but the professional profilers knew otherwise!

Reading any of this authors books will never disappoint you as he does extensive research on both the criminal and victim(s). The only thing I hate about his books is they end. I always look forward to his next book.

I enjoy Mr. Rosewood's style of writing and I remember years ago seeing a movie about this case .My brother whom is a police officer in Atlanta has also told me about Wayne Williams and so I knew some about him prior to reading this. The Atlanta Child Murders were horrific but I have always felt there were other people responsible as well and not just Wayne involved.I know that he was caught dumping evidence and finding fibers consistent with carpet he had was definitive, but I still think he didnt murder all of them. The sad truth was so many were murdered before anyone took notice and so young. Its just a sad horrific crime and I do believe Mr Rosewood did emphasize on the key elements of as well as background on Wayne.I personally don't like reading long drawn out accounts of a true crime and material that isnt relevant as some authors do focus on. For this reason, this book is worth acknowledging and reading.

I had no idea at all what to expect when I received an advance copy of The Old Drift, but I am beyond happy; I am thrilled to have read it. This is a story that just pulls you in until you are completely immersed. To call it amazing and breathtaking doesn’t do it justice, and to say it is just the story of three multicultural families and the history of a country in Africa is an understatement. It's a sprawling saga, like a mystery you can’t wait to solve, a ball of string that keeps unwinding or an onion with many, many layers. It’s six degrees of separation at its best – the story goes from person to person to person and location to location, but all are cleverly linked. You suddenly look up and go “Oh!” because it’s that person or that place or that event again. The writing is magnificent. The Old Drift is a tale of a changing world, a changing nation, a changing people, with all the love, longing, desire, and loss that go with it. The cruelties and the exploitation, not just by the colonials, but by each other, are shocking. You get so involved with the characters that you want to step in and stop the bad times, let their hopes and dreams come true. This history was at once so foreign to me yet at the same time so familiar, so compellingly filled with the music and scents and sensations of Zambia brought to life by author Namwali Serpell. A cloud of sadness and futility hang over everything, yet hope, determination and courage push through. It’s sometimes magical, sometimes horrifying. It’s history, fairytale, romance and science fiction all rolled into one satisfying story. This is not a book you read lightly, not one you read to escape, but a book you won’t soon forget.

How much do you know about Zambia? If you're like me, probably not much. This wonderfully written, sprawling novel, however, may well inspire you (like me) to read more about its history and culture. Told through the eyes of three families, all linked in ways that might not be immediately obvious, this is a mix of fact and fiction, with some magical realism to boot. Beginning in 1904 and moving through the century to 2020, it's a sometimes frustrating look at a country and its people. Parts of this do drag a bit but power through because there's always something different around the corner. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Note that this is a long novel and might even be best read in hard copy to take best advantage of the family tree.

I received a copy of The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell from the Publisher (Hogarth/ Penguin Random House) in exchange for an honest review. The Old Drift is scheduled for release March 26, 2019.The Old Drift takes place mostly on the banks of the Zambezi River in a young country sprung from an old colonial settlement called the Old Drift. The story focuses on the intertwining histories of three families. We see the personal trials of the members of these families, their brushes with political agenda and movements, the battle against a virus, and a desire to frame the future. This story combines actual history, dreams of the future, and touches of magical realism. This story follows nine main characters, which initially concerned me. At the front of the book is a family tree, outlining how the nine characters listed in the table of contents are connected. When I saw this, I was worried that I would not enjoy this story. The truth is, I sometimes struggle to keep track of names during a story, so stories that follow a large cast through long periods of time sometimes lose me. The characters begin to blur together, and I fail to keep track of them as individuals through the epic. This was not much of an issue for me in this story. Serpell does such a great job of drawing clear characters that for the bulk of the story, I was very clear on who’s who. I did begin to suffer some blur toward the end of the story with the featured males, Jacob and Joseph. I think this partially intentional on the part of the author, leading to the mystery that if left at the end for you to imagine your way through.Serpell did a good job of taking me to a land that was foreign, yet had touches of the familiar. This former English colony was a fascinating blend of traditional African features and imported English touches. This was true of many elements of the story. I was never clear where the line was between foreign and domestic, between reality and imagined.

Needed this for an ECE class, such great information. I have really enjoyed this book so far.

All is good

Love it!

It Was the book I needed. I got into time. No marking and great condition. I would recommend this product.

Although this book is informative. It wasn't really what I was looking for. It discusses more of a leadership among the staff then within the classroom and with the kids. This book also assumes that you are a lead teacher in the class. I had to have it for school, but I was disappointed in it's content.

Met expectations

The book is well written; however it has no substance. It poses more questions than answers. I am very disappointed.

Very few 5 stars ratings, but EVERYONE should read/study this book! (a few too many sports metaphors and analogies, but that's his point of reference). A truly un-common man, in today's world of weak, and low character population. I needed to hear, re-hear everything in this book. Its so nice to see someone who recognizes the value God put in their parents, and be honestly grateful for it! Thanks, Tony, really appreciate your input through this book, and through your radio messages. Edify! Thanks again, Dave (in Colorado)

Every young man and older man should read this book and take this challenge to be uncommon...workbook and devotional book is great too based on this one...highly recommend!

I recall being in a staff meeting some years ago and the team leader mentioned mentioned. I blurted out, who is Tony Dungy? fortunately no one looked at me like I was the idiot I felt like, after I discovered who Tony Dungy is. Since that time I set out to find out more about him and now I have bought his books. I must say that they are remarkable. Truly outstanding reads. I really like the fact that he is a Christian. His books share such good information for everyone from sports fan, Christian book readers, and the casual reader. My husband who rarely reads anything not involved with his job, says he is going to read these books. This is an absolutely great read! Thanks Mr. Dungy!!!

Can't go wrong with a Tony Dungy book. Inspiring and true to like examples. Great gift.

Bought 1 for my husband last year for Christmas and he enjoyed it. Bought my brother the daily challenge and he found my husband's book at our house and wanted to complete the set! If you want to make a true football fan happy, give them one of Tony Dungy' books. Very positive role model!

Great book for family.

When I first read Uncommon, I knew it was the perfect book for my students: young men I teach English to in prison on the island of Trinidad. I hoped they would feel that this book was as special as I thought it was. They were blown away. They couldn't wait to get the Uncommon Daily Challenge by Dungy as well. Uncommon has become a guide for their lives. Every week my students are excited to tell me something they realize about their lives because of Uncommon. Their dream is to meet Coach Dungy some day.

As a woman reading this book, I found that it was geared towards men. I didn't realize this until I started reading it, but I'm glad I finished it. It's so important for our youth today to have positive male role models and great dads in the home. Unfortunately, many of our youth no longer have this.Dungy shares stories of role models he had in his life and the influence his dad made on him. It was the combination of the male role models and both of his parents that made a difference in his life. Anyone can be a positive role model to our young men today, and Dungy challenges men to do just that. Excellent challenge and principles to live by.

This book is great for improving specific weak spots you may have. Definitely recommend.

Very effective tool to drill down the math. Excellent resource!

I can see that the author spent his time trying to categorize the questions by topic and chose include the most difficult questions. It helps that all the questions are located in one location, which makes access quite easy. However, in terms of originality, this book is lacking. Almost all the questions I saw were similar to previously administered ACT questions. I suppose for somebody who hasn't seen any of the ACT questions before, this is a fairly decent resource. For a teacher who is looking for truly "advanced" questions, this book doesn't cut it.

This was an amazing book! Loved it.

The first two or three chapters were less interesting than the rest, so give yourself time to get into this book. Bruchko is the story of a 19 year old with no training or background other than his intense skill in linguistics and his even more intense love for the Lord and the unreached peoples of a South American jungle who goes into that jungle and learns the culture and world of a previously unreached tribe. He shares the gospel within the context of that tribe and its customs. It's a fascinating read, if a bit gruesome at times (the parasites, ugh), and heartbreaking at others. Unlike almost any other missionary story I have read.

I just finished reading Bruchko and found the story to be interesting and, in some ways, pretty shocking what Bruce Olson went through to be a missionary witness to the Motilone Indians in South America. He was truly dedicated to his heart's desire (and calling) to reach these people, even under extreme circumstances. What a delight to read how God had used him to make a difference in the lives of these Indians. And what a good example of working within the culture instead of trying to force a people to adopt our western culture. The book is a simple read and well worth adding to one's missionary book collection. Bruce could easily be added to the list of other great missionaries.

i had trouble putting this down! after finishing each chapter, i said to myself, this is the last chapter i'll read tonight. but then i turned the page and made the mistake of thinking i'll just SEE what the first page of the next chapter says....and before i knew it, i'd finished that chapter and was into the next....and the next. what a great book! what a great missionary experience! what a great idea, to introduce Jesus Christ within the particular culture!

And what you have to share will not be shared until they respect you back. This book tells the compelling story of how a young man followed promptings by the Holy Spirit that made no sense to the elders of his world. The more he trusted those promptings the more amazing his journey became and the more effective he was as a person and as a truth teller sent by Christ. There are many culturally and spiritually significant lessons to be learned from this powerful and engaging story.

Both my boys read this at 13 years old. I wouldn't recommend for a younger child, they will probably lose interest. The boys love stories of missionaries, especially teenagers. I have bought this book at least 7 times over the years to give as gifts. Excellent reading!

I don't want to give away the story, but it is pretty moving. I know I cried a lot reading it. The young man, who we would probably call a "nerd", "loner", or "loser" today, wanted to serve Jesus in the mission field but was turned down repeatedly by organizations. He then just raised his own money, and trusting God went on his own. The rest of the story is amazing and moving, and shows what we can do when we trust God and venture out. I don't think I'd ever be this brave, but I wish I was.

Apart from the amazing story itself, this book was an excellent example on how to teach people about God and Jesus without trying to force them to look and act and be just like you.So many times in Christianity there is this mindset that all Christians have to look and act and speak and dress the same. What Bruchko shows is that to God the only norm is conformity in His Son Jesus Christ - and this book really helps challenge the idea of what that conformity looks like.Bruce used the Culture of the Motilone people to teach them about the truth of Christianity while resisting the urge to 'westernize' them. He was sensitive to their own beliefs, allowing the Holy Spirit to work amoung them to change their lives in God's timing, rather than trying to force issues when the time wasn't ripe.As described in this book, Bruce allowed God to come to the Motilone and work in their hearts, rather than force God upon them.I also appreciated the humanity of this book; it shows Bruce as a typical human being: stubborn, foolish and prideful; and yet, it shows how he was used by God to create such an amazing outpouring among the Motilone and other indigenous tribes.I look forward to getting to meet my Motilone brothers someday!

"Jesus had dark skin, and his eyes were black. He wore a G-string and hunted with bows and arrows. Jesus was a Motilone" (139).Bruchko is the story of how God used a nineteen year old boy to redeem an entire people group.Bruce Olson is a respected linguist, translator, and missionary. His incredibly successful work among the Motilone and other Indians could be called miraculous, and is recognized across the globe. Bruchko catalogues God's work through Olson in the first years of his ministry in Columbia beginning in 1959.Bruchko is so easy to read, thought provoking, and riveting that people of all ages and backgrounds will enjoy it. Furthermore, those who read it will be challenged to act on their calling. If they do not know their calling they will want to find out what it is. Bruce Olson has given readers a gift in Bruchko.

I was hoping to find a lot of answers in this book. Unfortunately, I failed to check the Copyright date (2006).I'm sure this was groundbreaking in 2006. Today, however, there is better information available on-line... with all the usual caveats of consuming anything on-line.

This book is a wonderful glimpse behind the curtain at one of the most advanced software development firms in the world. Renowned for hiring the best and the brightest, this book shows how they learned to do development in a smarter and more efficient manner. Some people may consider a SDL to be overkill, but the evidence presented is clear; if you want an efficient, effective process for meeting customer requirements, one must consider and address security. And this book is the how-to companion to the other great titles associated with Microsoft and secure coding. Whereas Writing Secure Code, Second Edition, focuses on technical detail, this book focuses on the process that enables developer to achieve the technical details. This book is the project manager's guide to how it should be done. How to set up your development processes so that better developers can contribute in an effective fashion towards making better software. For some, there are no new secrets revealed in this book, but I know of no other source with all this information together in one place. And it comes with a bonus - the material has been tested and proven at the world's largest developer group. And in this case, bigger is not easier, but much harder - decentralized bureaucracies and business unit independence aside, it works at Microsoft, and as it gets further embedded into their processes and systems, the future for this methodology looks better and better.Thank you Mike Howard and Steve Lipner for finishing the story. First we learn what to do (Writing Secure Code), now you let us know how to get it done (The Security Development Lifecycle). This may not be the perfect book, but then, I've yet to see that one. This book does advance the management side of the state-of-the-art light years forward, into the current century. This book is the textbook for the process side of software engineering in my classes, and I look forward to future editions and more details from behind the curtain.

Well ten with many excellent examples. This is the place to start if you're interested in developing secure software or reviewing systems for security and re3liability.

I read six books on software security recently, namely "Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed" by Michael Howard and David LeBlanc; "19 Deadly Sins of Software Security" by Michael Howard, David LeBlanc, and John Viega; "Software Security" by Gary McGraw; "The Security Development Lifecycle" by Michael Howard and Steve Lipner; "High-Assurance Design" by Cliff Berg; and "Security Patterns" by Markus Schumacher, et al. Each book takes a different approach to the software security problem, although the first two focus on coding bugs and flaws; the second two examine development processes; and the last two discuss practices or patterns for improved design and implementation. My favorite of the six is Gary McGraw's, thanks to his clear thinking and logical analysis. The other five are still noteworthy books. All six will contribute to the production of more security software."Security Development Lifecycle" (SDL) is unique because in many ways it exposes the guts of Microsoft's product development process. I cannot recall seeing another technical company share so much of its internal procedures with the public. One of the most interesting aspects of SDL is the attention paid to security after a product is shipped. No one at Microsoft breathes a sigh of relief when boxes appear on store shelves. Instead, Microsoft explains how it conducts security response planning in ch 15 and security response execution in ch 17. (Between the two is ch 16 -- only 3/4 of a page! Why bother?)Although I liked SDL overall (enough to justify 4 stars), I thought it suffered three major problems. First, I don't think the audience was defined properly. p xviii mentions "managers" as the primary target, along with architects and designers. Specifically, "this is not a book for developers." Yet, ch 12 ("Secure Testing Policies") is definitely for programmers. A manager probably not going to know what a "null pointer dereference" is; at the very least that is not a subject that should be discussed in a book for managers.Second, I think SDL suffers a little too much overlap with the earlier Microsoft book "Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed." WSC2E addressed writing documentation, security testing ,and obviously secure coding in much the same language as repeated in SDL. Sometimes repetition is justified, but perhaps those subjects appeared in WSC2E for a reason and did not belong in a book for managers.Third, and most importantly, Microsoft continues its pattern of misusing terms like "threat" that started with "Threat Modeling" and WSC2E. SDL demonstrates some movement on the part of the book's authors towards more acceptable usage, however. Material previously discussed in a "Threat Modeling" chapter in WSC2E now appears in a chapter called "Risk Analysis" (ch 9) -- but within the chapter, the terms are mostly still corrupted. Many times Microsoft misuses the term risk too. For example, p 94 says "The Security Risk Assessment is used to determine the system's level of vulnerability to attack." If you're making that decision, it's a vulnerability assessment; when you incorporate threat and asset value calculations with vulnerabilities, that's true risk assessment. The authors try to deflect what I expect was criticism of their term misuse in previous books. On p 102 they say "The meaning of the word threat is much debated. In this book, a threat is defined as an attacker's objective." The problem with this definition is that it exposes the problems with their terminology. The authors make me cringe when I read phrases like "threats to the system ranked by risk" (p 103) or "spoofing threats risk ranking." On p 104, they are really talking about vulnerabilities when they write "All threats are uncovered through the analysis process." The one time they do use threat properly, it shows their definition is nonsensical: "consider the insider-threat scenario -- should your product protect against attackers who work for your company?" If you recognize that a threat is a party with the capabilities and intentions to exploit a vulnerability in an asset, then Microsoft is describing insiders appropriately -- but not as "an attacker's objective."Don't get me wrong -- there's a lot to like about SDL. I gave the book four stars, and I think it would be good to read it. I fear, though, that this is another book distributed to Microsoft developers and managers riddled with sometimes confusing or outright wrong ways to think about security. This produces lasting problems that degrade the community's ability to discuss and solve software security problems. I also question the implication that SDL is great and everything else doesn't produce verified security improvements. I can understand denigrating Linux, but is Microsoft afraid to acknowledge the security record of an OS like OpenBSD?

2,5 actuallyI'm in the minority again, but this time I don't think it's me. I'll try to explain. Bear with me, I'm in a ranting mood. This was my first book by this author. I know he also wrote some books with Riley Hart who I adore. Well I think I had too high expectations from Devon McCormack and I ended extremely disappointed. I don't know what I expected, but all this mess was not it. I really struggled to finish it.I'm rating it with 2,5 because I'm really in the middle of "didn't like it" and "it was OK". I honestly tried to enjoy it, I even got to a point I turned the pages real fast (somewhere in the middle of the book) and I also started to like Tim, BUT then it all felt flat and almost sent me into a coma. I couldn't wait to put it behind me.I've buddy read it with my best friend and as we shared our thoughts and highlights, I realized it's not only me here. We both got so bored!I think the beginning was too centered on the sex and not having their back stories it kind of felt flat and a little forced. They weren't what they seemed, Tim a bad boy and a drug dealer, Mark a spoiled rich student. Tim was supposed to be only a mistake Mark chose to make. I have read before many sex scenes where the MC's weren't invested at first, and still I enjoyed reading them and thought they were hot. Here I didn't feel the chemistry, or any suspense adding up. Nothing. It felt like a debut book. I have read SO many great debut books so this really felt mediocre.I expected at least the ending to be good enough, but no such thing! I got to hate Mark... after he so easily distrusted Tim. I just couldn't with all the poor angst, the backstabbing friends and then the cheesy lines in the end: “I’ll always fight for you, Mark. Because you’re worth fighting for.” "The man who I was so sure I was above falling in love with—the man I underestimated so much when we first met. I thought he was a demon, but he’s an angel. My angel."This book had SO much potential, but the poor writing made me cringe. Besides the writing, I also hated the awful spitting in the face scenes. But these were a few and only in the beginning. Not sure if I'll have the courage to try another book by this author. I was really disappointed here.

I started this book expecting sex and not much more. I'm so glad I was so wrong. There is so much more than just sex here. You really learn a lot about the two main characters and I found myself cheering for them both. There is quite a bit of depth to their emotions and they both do a lot of learning and growing. There was a couple times when I thought the problems were solved a bit too easily but, I'd rather have that than have the conflict drag on with one misunderstanding after another. This is the first Devon McCormack book I've read but, it definitely won't be the last. He does a wonderful job of relaying how the characters are feeling and what they are thinking. Several times I was brought to tears while reading this but it has some wonderful feel good moments too. I highly recommend this book.

I didn't know that I would love the characters in this book when I started reading this story. I only knew that I was in the mood for some hot steamy sex with maybe a little bit of romance thrown in. And I got that, but I also got so much more. I got characters that, well... it was like this for me... I started out thinking ok, this is a super spoiled needy kid (Mark) that has everything and wants to make everyone in his life suffer because he feels like he was treated unfairly. It quickly became evident that while this character could have been that shallow, he wasn't. Not at all. He turns out to be a driven young man who might have been naive but was smart too. He was taken advantage of and there's the element of angst for sure, he is out to make new memories that wipe the bad ones away in the sexiest, perviest of ways! And, he's found the perfect guy to do it with.Tim is the perfect picture of a bad boy. He does illegal things for a living and spends a great deal of his time sleeping with spoiled rich kids and breaking hearts because he's the whole package and makes these boys that normally have everything they want at the snap of a finger crazy when he moves on before they're ready. But he's not just what he shows everyone and somehow he starts to let Mark in and soon we can see that this character is someone who's caring and lonely but afraid to take a chance because of his past. Mark and Tim are perfect for each other and the build up of their relationship is a masterpiece of writing. Not too fast or too slow, just perfect. As well as the angsty moments... they weren't just thrown in, they were impeccably timed. Watching these two characters begin to have real feelings for each other and their very real fear of it because it was breaking all the rules they had was so sweet. The panty melting scenes that are frequent, were so hot. Seriously, these guys are sooooo sexy together! What I wasn't expecting at all were the depth that all the characters had, the secondary characters that really made this story great. A peak into a world that is privileged and these people aren't at all what they appeared to be. It was wonderful to see all these characters start out showing a side that people expect, but maybe don't necessarily like and then find out that it is just armor they are using to hide behind because they all have some damage from life. It made them very realistic and likable and also there might be a character or two that are just exactly the way they start out representing themselves. Made me love most of them and strongly dislike others. I like when I can feel that strongly for these make believe people. This book was exactly what I needed.

My kids were really into these books so we bought some. Much cheaper to buy the collections like this. They really enjoyed the stories, and I'm thinking my 6 year old could probably read them herself. I love these books.

will know after xmas

Daughter loves it!

Such a beautiful hard cover publication for such a small price!Would make a great gift.

If you are familiar with the Little Critter books from the 80's then you should consider this book. It is a great collection with colored pictures throughout. My granddaughter loves it.

My 3 year old son loves the Little Critter series and these ones are no different! I was nervous because I bought the book used but in very good condition and was pleasantly surprised when it came to my door in what looked like new condition. Perfect for story time! I love the story about health. After reading it my little man got up asked for a bowl of grapes and wanted to go back outside to run and play :-)

My son had loved Mercer Meyer, and now my Grandson does too!!! The illustrations are busy enough, and the "lessons" are simple. Perhaps looking for the spider on each page is another challenge, but I ended up reading the ENTIRE book to him!!!!!

I got this for both my 7 year old grand daughter and my 6 year old nephew. They are both animal lovers and these Little Critter books helped to get them to read more. I had them mailed to the house and the kids love having a surprise sent just to them.

Fascism: A Warning, by Madeleine Albright

Review

“Fascism: A Warning is dedicated to victims of fascism, but also to “all who fight fascism in others and in themselves”. Mrs Albright has earned the right to that ambitious mission-statement. At a moment when the question “Is this how it begins?” haunts Western democracies, she writes with rare authority.... [Yet] if her learning is to be expected, her way with words is a happy surprise, as is her wisdom about human nature. Free of geopolitical jargon, her deceptively simple prose is sprinkled with shrewd observations about the emotions that underpin bad or wicked political decisions.” (Economist)“Albright [has] serious credibility on the subject. She witnessed the evils of Fascism firsthand, as her book movingly chronicles. And she effectively makes the case: pay more attention to the signals, subtle and strong. A lot more.” (The New Yorker)“Why, as Madeleine Albright asks early in her new book, ‘are we once again talking about fascism?’ Who better to address these questions than Albright, whose life was shaped by fascism and whose contribution to the cultivation of democracy as a stateswoman and private citizen is unparalleled? In Fascism: A Warning Albright (with Bill Woodward) draws on her personal history, government experience and conversations with Georgetown students to assess current dangers and how to deal with them.” (New York Times)“Fascism [is] the work of a woman who knows authoritarianism when she sees it. And she sees the seeds of it not only in a slew of leaders hell bent on subverting democratic norms—Turkey’s ErdoÄŸan, Venezuela’s Maduro, Hungary’s Orbán, and others—but also in Donald Trump, whom she calls in the book ‘the first antidemocratic president in modern U.S. history.’” (The Daily Beast)“Besides providing an overview of the careers of Mussolini and Hitler, Albright looks at leaders such as Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez, Turkey’s Recep Erdogan, Hungary’s Viktor Orban, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.... Sage advice in perilous times.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Incisive… [Albright] offers cogent insights on worrisome political trends.” (Publishers Weekly)“Albright outlines the warning signs of fascism and offers concrete actions for restoring America’s values and reputation. There is priceless wisdom on every page.” (Booklist (starred review))

From the Back Cover

The twentieth century was defined by the clash between democracy and Fascism, a struggle that created uncertainty about the survival of human freedom and left millions dead. Given these horrors, one might expect the world to reject the spiritual successors to Hitler and Mussolini should they arise in our era. In Fascism: A Warning, Madeleine Albright draws on her experiences as a child in war-torn Europe and her distinguished career as a diplomat to question that assumption.Fascism not only endured through the course of the twentieth century, but now presents a more virulent threat to international peace and justice than at any time since the end of World War II.  Fascism: A Warning is a book for our times that is relevant to all times.  Written with wisdom by someone who has not only studied history but helped to shape it, this call to arms teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past.

Madeleine Albright is a former UN Ambassador and Secretary of State, with a long and honorable career serving the United States. Her personal history is compelling: born in Czechoslovakia shortly before World War II, she and her parents fled first Hitler and then, during the beginning of the Cold War, from Stalin. She did not learn until she was an adult that several family members, including grandparents, died in the Holocaust. This tragic history, combined with her astute intelligence and common sense, sharpens her pen and her powers of observation. Fascism: A Warning is her sixth book and is perhaps her most important work to date, as the world seems to face what many fear could be a long period of darkness.Albright is careful to warn against the indiscriminate use of the term "fascism," and she very properly begins this book with a discussion of its proper usage and meaning. Beginning with the origins of the term in the early twentieth century, she traces the development of Fascist regimes and leaders who promote Fascism, from Mussolini and Hitler through Stalin (who raged against Fascism while practicing it to an advanced degree) through to the present. Erdogan, Orban, Milosevic, the Kim dynasty, and Putin are some of the many practicing Fascists Albright covers. Donald Trump has a chapter devoted specifically to him, but Albright is not writing a partisan screed by any means, merely analyzing the man's behavior and actions and demonstrating their disturbing similarities to leaders who clearly practice Fascism. Perhaps the most important chapters are the final two, in which Albright enumerates the danger signs for the United States and the world and provides a series of questions to ask and steps to take for concerned citizens. This is a book written for the general reader which does not abandon scholarly rigor. It is extensively documented with a Notes section that will be an excellent resource for those of us who wish to learn and study more. In 2018 the way forward for the United States and the world is uncertain, but we are still fortunate (so far) to have strong and confident voices like Albright's to guide us.

This is a timely book by a brilliant person who had a front row seat to the tragedy that was Europe in the Mid-20th Century. There is little doubt that the world is starting to look fearfully like it did at the beginning of those dark hours, starting with the tyranny of Hitler and Mussolini and culminating in the Cold War and the gulags of the Soviet Union.Figuratively speaking, this is really three books. The first will be the most divisive and may, in fact, quite unfortunately, relegate the book to practical irrelevance. The second book is extremely insightful and informative. And the third book, honestly, is pure gold and vintage Madeline Albright. The first book begins with a contradiction. Albright openly acknowledges that Fascism has become a meaningless epithet, hurled, as it is, by opposing politicians of every stripe and at parents merely attempting to limit the cell phone usage of their children. She goes on to defend the titular use of the term, however, by clarifying her use of the term: “To my mind, a Fascist is someone who identifies strongly with and claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use whatever means are necessary—including violence—to achieve his or her goals.”At that point, however, she hasn’t really narrowed the list of politicians who qualify for the pejorative label at all. Every reader will conclude that his or her political enemies fit the bill. She seals the fate of this portion of the book, however, when she asks, on page 4 of the book, “…why, this far into the twenty-first century, are we once again talking about Fascism?” And answers, “One reason, frankly, is Donald Trump. If we think of Fascism as a wound from the past that had almost healed, putting Trump in the White House was like ripping off the bandage and picking at the scab.” And she goes on to make thinly veiled comparisons between Trump, Mussolini, and Joseph McCarthy. And, unfortunately, I fear, she, in one fell swoop of prose, both fuels the fires of division while exiling the book to practical irrelevance. In the end, she will likely only energize both political extremes, and, I suspect, the reader ratings of this book will ultimately reflect that. That is most unfortunate because without those opening pages this would be a truly terrific book. It chronicles both relevant history and the recent past to a degree that few other people on the planet could. The second part of the book is devoted to an analysis of recent political events in Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Venezuela, the Philippines, Russia, North Korea, and, of course, the United States. All, to varying degrees, she maintains, are showing signs of a slide toward Fascism and the decline of post-war liberal democracy. It is an informative analysis and unless you are a political junkie, you will learn a lot.In the third part of the book she truly hits her stride. She notes, for starters, that the Fascist epithet may be appropriate for the US today for reasons having more to do with economics than populism. The Fascist Party of Italy, which gave rise to general use of the term, was the ultimate merger of the corporate and political states. And that is, in fact, what has happened here in the US.The incorporation of America has been going on since the conservative movement of the 1980s, however, and while Trump is carrying the corporate water at the moment, he can hardly be blamed for allowing Wall Street and Silicon Valley to take control of Washington. The incorporation accelerated greatly during the dot-com 90s when young entrepreneurs were preaching disruption and libertarianism. It is ironic, indeed, that tech’s “democratic” perspective has now produced among the biggest and most powerful corporations the world has ever known. And they pulled it off, actually, while the anti-trust regulators in both Republican and Democratic administrations stood by and watched. To me what we have today is not so much analogous to the Fascist or Nazi parties of the mid-20th Century as it is the power of the church in Medieval Europe. The kings and queens of Washington may wear the crowns, but it is the corporate “popes” of Wall Street and Silicon Valley that are really calling the shots.Which is why both parties, I think, should be fearful of whatever happens in the mid-term elections. Be careful what you wish for. Neither party has defined an agenda that addresses the issues that originally brought Trump to power. And until that happens I believe Albright’s Fascist warning will remain valid. In the final chapters of the book Albright notes that putting American interests first invites Russia, China, and others to do the same. And it is here that she lowers her partisan guard (we all have one) and calls for unity through the recognition of our common humanity and the rejection of extremism that favors one group over another. It is here that she also seems to soften her position on ideals of post-war democratic liberalism and focuses more on compassion, integrity, and fairness. I think of it as defining a new standard of shared obligation and responsibility that includes those countries and those people that aren’t rushing to implement an Electoral College and to copy our form of bare-knuckle individualism, but those are my words, not hers.In the end she notes that spend her time on issues like: “…purging excess money from politics, improving civic education, defending journalistic independence, adjusting to the changing nature of the workplace, enhancing inter-religious dialogue, and putting a saddle on the bucking bronco we call the Internet.” It’s a perfect ending to what is a very good book by an inspiring individual.I do recommend reading it.

This is a important book. If 20th century history was not your favorite subject in school, Secretary Albright offers us a very readable crash course, starting with Mussolini and the events that gave rise to Fascism and continuing right up to 2018. I did get a bit bogged down towards the middle of the book with historical details in Turkey and Hungary but it's all important and relevant to the current climate in the US. Make no mistake, Fascism is alive and well and it can happen here. Secretary Albright has illustrated the historical precursors to totalitarian rule, and they are happening all around us today. Unfortunately, the people who most need to hear and understand this message won't read this book and are dismissing it as an anti-Trump rant which it certainly is not. "If you pluck a chicken one feather at a time, people won't notice." Albright is asking us to wake up and notice the chicken pluckers before it's too late.
