The last thing I needed was another book on exercise. I started as a personal trainer in 1980 to pay for law school and I've been researching/practicing since. I have 48 books on exercise physiology, bodybuilding, sport preparation, etc. I found out about Simple Strength when I heard Mercedes being interviewed on the GMB Fitness podcast. I respect these guys because they believe in a "Big Tent" for fitness. After the interview I headed over to Amazon, checked out the preview and purchased the book. I wasn't disappointed.At the age of almost 58, my training has changed over the last couple of years. I have to pay attention to my mileage. Simple Strength is a system that is principle-based and it provides a flexible framework for me to age gracefully and powerfully.I like that it addresses the needs of outdoor athletes. I was once one of those and I'm trying to get back to it. We've even moved from NYC to the country for a healthier lifestyle.The exercises and programming are presented as progressions. This enables athletes at all levels of strength and conditioning to benefit. In addition to strength, conditioning and power are also addressed.The book talk about the nervous system's role in strength - an often overlooked factor. The author also gives credit to some of her sources like Kelly Starrett and Pavel Tsatsouline.I look forward to to plugging this into my routine...now where are those climbing shoes I packed away a few years ago?

By and large, I do not associate myself with the outdoors. Yes, I do go for walks/hikes/runs once in a while though. And that's the end of it. But this book actually inspired me to do more. Firstly because I do agree that my body feels stuck, and activate the physical would help me be more whole. So the author hit the nail on it's head with that question. These words by the author have really stuck by me, after reading the book: "Go there, go all the way there, and that is where the magic happens.”The sections on understanding ones bodyweight and what is strength, provide a great grounding for the routine and movements that are to follow. It helped me shift my understanding of my body and fitness! I love how mindful the approach of the author is, with avoiding self-talk and leaving the ego behind. The workouts almost feel meditative! And this book is as holistic as it gets, with descriptions of benefits of exercises, how to manage pain, habit building like stacking and scheduling, and the author has even walked the reader through phases of the routine. PERFECT!The language of the book is easy to follow, motivational, generously sprinkled with power quotes, and chock full of AMPLE info on building, sustaining and enhancing your work routine. It is actually complete in every way you can imagine. I also love the images, challenges one may face and video prompts for the exercises. So helpful!

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking to get into shape without the hassle of going to the gym; you can save money, workout at your own pace, and develop real strength from performing very natural exercises without pricy machines or strict workout routines.

This is a great guide for people looking for a flexible, sound, and well rounded training template. There is a well grounded approach to mobility, strength development, and power. All useful stuff. The floor work and mobility material was really useful for me. While none of this stuff is new, it is collected in a well organized manner and it is doable. The book is a helpful guide to beginning bodyweight training. I do have a small quibble with the models in the photographs; their actual positions are not always what is being described in the text. But that isn't much of a handicap.

David has become the PG Woodhouse of his era. Unfortunately, this includes publishing SOME reruns. Great writing​ as always and some tales are new. But you will be frustrated when you recognize you read that story before. I LOVE David but he needs to get out more.

I'm normally a huge Sedaris fan but I had a tough time getting through this one. It's a collection of diary entries, the majority of them being very short, about three or four sentences, often covering the same topics again and again. As such, the first 2/3 of the book drags and I kept putting it down and coming back to it days later. It closes strong, with the entries becoming longer and the writing becoming engaging and humorous towards the end. I don't regret reading it but I do wish I'd just waited and checked it out of the library instead of forking over the cash.

If you've read all of David Sedaris' books, attended one or more of of his performances, followed him on NPR or have read his magazine articles, you'll enjoy this book. I loved looking back on his younger years and early observations--and especially loved seeing his list of dreams and goals, and how many of them came to fruition. He also gave us a deeper view into his mom's alcohol addiction and his sister Tiffany's mental illness. I'd recommend this specifically to his fans and followers and look forward to reading his next 15+ years of diaries. I rated it 5 stars because I couldn't put it down and laughed a lot in the middle of the night. He just never disappoints.

I had trouble putting the Diaries down once I started reading. And what made that feel odd was that there was no plot or story line. I just couldn't wait to see what might happen next, where the author might go, and who he might meet up with along the way. Then, upon reaching the end, I wanted more. Thank you Mr. Sedaris for sharing your wit, humor and keen observations.

Not only funny, but insightful, because I really find David's history and life and how he became who he is today to be fascinating. To say that I'm a fan of David Sedaris is to understate my devotion, because I literally cannot get enough of his work. I first saw David in person in a small bookstore, in Berkeley, before he made it big, and have delighted in seeing his success since. Whether reading or listening, I do it over and over. So true to form, I first bought this book, then downloaded it as an audio. I listened to it while driving 800 miles recently on a grim journey, and it was just the thing to lighten a tough time. David's voice is half the fun, but it's just as fun to read it in written form. I can't wait for the next issue, 2003-2017.

Here’s the thing. This is not a book you sit down and start with of his work. In fact, he even states in his intro that he doesn’t expect people to pick this up and read it cover to cover. I chose to because I am seeing him on his tour and wanted to be prepared and have ready most of his books and love him. All of his previous work is funny and entertaining but this does take a darker dive into his life. You see a rawer side him but I do feel his wit shines through.If you are an avid David fan, read this after reading some of his other books. I was able to tie some of his diary entries his short stories! Like the time his brother almost drowned and he talked about in the story about his brothers weddinh in When You are Engulfed in Flames. It was pretty cool to see the diary entry where he talked about he and his brother swimming and almost drowning.But like I said - go into this later. Don’t let this be your first book of his.I found it cool to see the start of his stories. That he wrote in his diaries and then expanded in his essays in his books.

Can't emphasize enough how happy I am to have this as an audio book read by the author! A must for fans of David Sedaris. Contains all the quirky, human and spot-on observations we've come to expect from this writer, with liberal doses of his bravery in sharing his most intimate, personal thoughts and experiences, without a trace of spin. Always strikes me as totally honest--an admirable quality in everyone, but especially a writer! The decades-long span of the entries allow readers to witness close up his journey as a writer. Thanks, David!

As far as I’m concerned, the release of any new book by David Sedaris is always cause for celebration. I don’t care if it’s another collection memoirs, fiction, or just one long account of him catching flies to feed to his house spiders in Normandy (yes, please). I don’t need to know anything about it ahead of time, my pre-order is placed at the first mention. In this case it’s 25 years of Sedaris’ diary entries. If you’ve read his books of autobiographical essays, this tome provides fascinating glimpses of periods and events you’ve read about before, from various forms of drug abuse, odd jobs, and faithful nightly visits to IHOP to interactions with his parents and siblings, life in France with his partner, sobriety, and life on seemingly endless book tours. Only this time it’s more personal, because – at least originally – these diary entries were simply written for Sedaris himself. It’s a pretty amazing thing to read what a person chose to record for and about themselves from age 21 to 46. I also thoroughly enjoyed all the mentions of David’s sister, Amy Sedaris. It’s clear she’s always been the glorious and talented weirdo she is today. I hope Sedaris intends to publish more of his diaries someday. I’ll be ready.

After hearing Dr. Kahn on the Rich Roll Podcast, I immediately purchased his book. As I worked through the book I also worked through the recipes in the back. The book itself was thorough and practical. I appreciate Dr. Kahn's evidence based approach to nutrition, and as I read I was excited and empowered to try his recipes. Though not in the order he suggests, I made every single recipe in the book including the few bonus recipes. Out of 60+ recipes, there were only 2 that I personally wouldn't make again. If you are looking for easy plant based recipes that taste excellent, this is the book for you. You won't find too many ingredients and you can find most of the ingredients used at your local grocery store. Thank you Dr. Kahn.

Really recommend this book to anyone looking to get Healthly and lose weight. Easy to read, and I am on board and have bought the books mentioned to help with recipes. Forks over Knives has a great wealth of information and recipes to keep you goi g and inspire you.

The subject and substance of the book are excellent. However, the writing could have been better in several respects including its organization, style, and repetitiveness. The volume could be reduced by 50% without losing any of its value or overall message. While I commend Dr. Kahn for undertaking this project and bringing it to completion, I wish he had better editorial support.Nevertheless, "The Plant-Based Solution" is a valuable addition to the nutrition related medical literature.

There are many authors addressing the convergence of evidence supporting a plant-based diet, but I always appreciate it just a little more when the info comes from the perspective of a practicing physician. I highly recommend this book for people newly interested in plant-based nutrition. It's also a fantastic reference for those well-versed in the science. Great book.

The information in this book is very helpful for anyone with cardiac disease. Lots of great information about why a plant-based diet is preferred to cure disease. The recipes that I have made so far are delicious and easy. The Oatmeal is so delicious I have eaten it almost everyday since I received this book - yum. I never thought to add pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds to oatmeal - it makes it a special treat.

Clear and informative book on the values of adopting a whole food plant based diet, not only for your health, but for the well-being of animals and our planet. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because some of the recipes in the back use olive oil and refined white flour, which I don’t understand since it seems to go against the message of the book. Otherwise, love it!

I just received the book an I really can’t wait to dive into the recipes . The recipes look really good. I only issue that see is that he uses canola oil some reci0es use olive oil an say it s optional so I will have to tweak it a bit I tried to eat oil free but either way I’m looking forward to these recipes.
