I'm a big fan of Alison Green's blog, Ask a Manager, where she doles out thoughtful advice and tough love to readers. Though I've never worked at a nonprofit, I decided to read the book and see what I could learn about management in general. Trust me, whether or not you work for a nonprofit, if you currently manage people or aspire to be a manager, this book is a great resource.I have managed people before, but I tend to care more about the people than the business. Not the worst trait in the world to have, but not always effective, either. When I became a manager, there wasn't any sort of training available to me at my company. As I've progressed through other companies in the role of instructional designer charged with creating management training, I've found that to be the norm. We promote people because they're really good at their jobs, when we should be looking beyond that to see if they will make effective leaders who can motivate others.Alison and co-author, Jerry Hauser, present information in a very accessible way. I had never thought of management as getting things done through others. After I read that, I thought, of course! I knew that, as a manager, the buck stopped with me, but my first management experience was in a company where managers still carried the full workload of a regular team member and sort of had power over their direct reports. Sort of? Yes, we could try to enforce rules and such, but the company was always so afraid of being sued, consequences were rarely imparted and almost never upheld. The book is divided into three parts: Managing the work, managing other people, and managing yourself. There's clear guidance on how to balance being hands-on while being hands-off. The book also includes tons of great resources, including worksheets and planning tools.I've highlighted about 28 pages, so I can't share all of my favorite moments, but here are a few:• What does guiding more and doing less look like in practice? 1. Agree on expectations. 2. Stay engaged. 3. Create accountability and learning.• When you’re assigning work, look for opportunities to make the assignment truly a conversation, as opposed to simply dictating every element. For instance, if there’s flexibility in what the finished project should look like, ask the staff member what she thinks the outcome should be. You can also ask questions around the other pieces of delegation, such as, “So who else do you think needs to be involved? ” and “Do we have samples that might be useful here? ” and “What timeline makes sense? ”• Here’s what the different pieces of MOCHA stand for: 1 Manager Assigns responsibility and holds owner accountable. Makes suggestions, asks hard questions, reviews progress, serves as a resource, and intervenes if the work is off track. Owner Has overall responsibility for the success or failure of the project. Ensures that all the work gets done (directly or with helpers) and that others are involved appropriately. There should be only one owner. Consulted Should be asked for input or needs to be bought in to the project. Helper Available to help do part of the work. Approver Signs off on decisions before they’re final. May be the manager, though might also be the executive director, external partner, or board chair.• Managers often define their staff members’ roles in ways that use those staffers as helpers to the manager rather than giving them roles with real ownership.• When contemplating promoting someone, the most important factor to consider is not what sort of job the staffer is doing in her current position, but instead how strongly matched she is with the skills you need in the new position. Organizations often do the opposite of this: we have frequently seen outstanding staffers get promoted and then flounder because the skills that made them so effective in the first position aren’t the same ones needed for the new one. Most commonly we see this with promotions to managerial positions, since the skills needed to get results through others are often very different from those needed to get results on your own.•The corollary of delegating as much as you can is that while you do less, you should guide more . And guiding takes time.Highly recommend.© Angela Risner 2014. I'm a big fan of Alison's "Ask A Manager" blog.I bought her book because I'm moving from an individual contributor to a management role, and this book is filled with great advice, especially for hiring and developing people. Those are two areas that I need to work on, and they've been incredibly useful. The most important section is part 3 - "Managing Yourself", which is something I wish more managers would do. It makes you think about how you should adapt to your new role and be successful at it.Although the book is more geared towards nonprofit companies, but you will have the same problems elsewhere as well.

I love love love this book. So much knowledge inside. It is worth every penny and then some. The examples are awesome and the advice priceless. This can help anyone in management whether non profit or for profit in my opinion.

This book contains useful and practical advice. I work in the public sector and while this book is geared towards nonprofits many of its core points can be applied universality. I have already used some of the guidance from the interview section and I hope to use the organizational tips soon. Thank you for this resource.

I love this book almost as much as I love Alison's blog: Ask a Manager. Her thoughtful insightfulness inspires and encourages me to be a better manager and a better employee.

Thanks

I am not done, but enjoying this book a lot so far. It is very informative and well-written. I read Alison's blog every day and was glad to have an opportunity to read a book written by her.

A step by step guide to managing that is interactive, thoughtful, and thorough. I use this book both as a handbook when a particular incident arises, and also as good PD reading. Highly recommend.

Review

"Bedford treats many aspects of Mexican culture and daily life with humor and grace: the slow passing of time, religious and civil fiestas…siestas and gunfights, bejeweled women an their sinful secrets, the music…and political gossip.” —Enrique Krauze, The New York Review of Books “Bedford is a beloved writer, and this travel memoir, originally published in 1953, brings all the same brilliance…Her impromptu trip is narrated in such amazing detail that you’ll delay the end, hoping the adventure will go on and on.” —Claire Luchette, Travel + Leisure “Before I am ready to call it quits, I would like to reread every book I ever deeply enjoyed, beginning with Jane Austen and Isaac Babel and Sybille Bedford’s A Visit to Don Otavio.” —William Maxwell “A powerful response to landscape and to people. Mrs. Bedford has the art of putting one bodily in the country with all senses awake, and one emerges with her from the Mexican experience bruised, shocked, but elated and with one’s brain turned on.” —V. S. Pritchett, New Statesman"One of the great works of travel literature.”—Benjamin Schwarz, The Atlantic “Here is Bedford in all her glory: the adventurer, the Bohemian, the reporter, the philosopher, the aesthete. Far from rendering the text chaotic, it thrives on these contrasting dimensions, engaging the reader on multiple levels and conveying the full range of Bedford’s many talents. Above all, what comes across is her sense of jouissance and fascination with the world.” —Hans Rollan, PopMatters “An amusing yet highly serious interpretation of Mexico.”—Shusha Guppy, The Paris Review   “A rare gem, poised, vivacious and with a delicate and finely-tuned sense of humor.”—Barbara Kastelein, Inside Mexico   “Everyone, whether or not he plans to visit Mexico, should read A Visit to Don Otavio.”—The New Yorker   “Of all the women writers of this century, Sybille Bedford is, to my mind, the finest.”—Julia Neuberger, Evening Standard   “[Bedford] is capable of exercising a fine sort of detachment while telling an intensely personal story.”—Virginia Lee Warren, The New York Times

About the Author

Sybille Bedford (1911–2006) was born Sybille von Schoenebeck in Charlottenburg, Germany, to an aristocratic German father and a partly Jewish, Hamburg-born mother. Raised variously in Germany, Italy, France, and England, she lived with her mother and Italian stepfather after her father’s death when she was seven, and was educated privately. Encouraged by Aldous Huxley, Bedford began writing fiction at the age of sixteen and went on to publish four novels, all influenced by her itinerant childhood among the European aristocracy:  A Legacy (an NYRB Classic),  Jigsaw (short-listed for the 1989 Booker Prize), and A Favourite of the Gods and A Compass Error (forthcoming from NYRB in a single volume in 2017). She married Walter Bedford in 1935 and lived briefly in America during World War II, before returning to England. She was a prolific travel writer, the author of a two-volume biography of her friend Huxley, and a legal journalist, covering nearly one hundred trials. In 1981 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire. Bruce Chatwin (1940–1989) was born in Sheffield, England. He was appointed a director of Sotheby’s at age twenty-five, but left to study archaeology at the University of Edinburgh and soon began a career as a travel writer for The Sunday Times Magazine. His 1977 book In Patagonia is considered a classic in the field of travel writing, and his 1988 novel, Utz, was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize.

An escape from the modern world. The descriptions of the onerous train trips and any kind of travel in that era are worth buying the book for. One of my favorite books

This is Bedford at her best. Her keen observations and dry sense of humor make this a very pleasurable read.

This was a Christmas gift and they liked it very much.

A fine book of travel writing, describing the author's trip in the late 1940s (first published in 1953). The author has the eyes and ears of a novelist, and a curiosity about the history.

I am puzzled by the euphoric high regard people like William Maxwell, V. S. Pritchett, and Bruce Chatwin had for Sybille Bedford book about a year in Mexico, mostly spent sponging off a member of the largely disposed elite, called Don Otavio, on the shores of Lake Chapala. If the book is a novel, as Chatwin’s introduction claims Bedford told him, it is a mediocre one with one-dimensional characters and no plot.As a travelogue, it is becalmed at the estate called San Pedro, the villa that Don Otavio and his older siblings are planning to turn into a hotel, though it is unreachable by road. For me, it is even more becalmed by going on and on and on then on some more about the hapless Hapsburg Maxmillian. (Unlike most Anglophone romancers, she has no interest in his wife who went mad, Carlotta.)She goes on at lesser length about the campaign for Indepence from Spain and rhapsodizes about Monte Alban and Mitla, though a reader unfamiliar with those Oaxaca pre-Columbian sites would not have any idea what they look like from what she wrote. Moreover, she mistakenly attributes Mitla to Zapotecs and Teotihuacan to Aztecs. (She did not get to Mayan or Mayan-Toltec sites.)The German-born Brit Bedford and her American traveling companion, E., went from New York to Mexico shortly after the end of WWII and were pleasantly surprised to have escaped rationing. They were unpleasantly surprised by roads and buses, and rather unappreciative of Mexican railroads with sleeping compartments. (These no longer exist, and I realize that my travels mostly by rail between 1974 and 1981 are longer ago from now than they were from the time Bedford was there.)She hated the Pacific ports of Mazatlan and Acapulco and failed to reach the ocean further south on another attempt, made the mistake of staying down by Lake Patzcuaro rather than in the colonial city above it, had good things to say about Cuernavaca, Guanajuato, Guadalajara and Mexico City. She also dismissed San Miguel Allende, already a developing expat home in the mid-1940s, and, when she was only a few miles from it, couldn’t be bothered to go see the then-new volcano (Parangaricutiromicuaro) that popped up in a Michoacan corn field .Mexico is not the hell it was for some other British writers (D. H. Lawrence’s Plumed Serpent, Graham Greene, Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano), but I was not wowed by her prose style. I was irritated by her faulty histories and by interjecting clumps of French into the text and for most of the chapter epigrams. I can read French, but found the epigrams irrelevant and their deployment (in marked contrasted to a dearth of Spanish) pretentious

Sybille Bedford was a witty and gifted writer. Every sentence of her account of her trip from New York to Mexico is a pleasure.

Great read, insightful, good writing, no surprise it's a classic.

Catherine Carrigan's book, What is Healing? Awaken Your Intuitive Power for Health and Happiness, is informative, profoundly inspiring, and empowering. Just to read it feels like beginning a healing process--one that includes both greater confidence and self-responsibility. The book is written with rare clarity and depth, and has an unconditionally loving, personal, and professional tone all at the same time. What is Healing? is very accessible, too, with many examples from Ms. Carrigan's own life included in the 84 short chapters that neatly flow into one another. Each is preceded by a wonderful quote, like this one from Eileen Caddy on page 17:"Cease trying to work everything out in your minds. It will get you nowhere. Live by intuition and inspiration and let your whole life be Revelation."Ms. Carrigan is a "professional health intuitive and holistic healer" who has had her own formidable healing journey. This gives her words an authenticity that can only come from lived experience, and there is both great depth and breadth to her shared insights. She says: "My goal in this book is to teach you how to access unconditional love in your life and, in so doing, open up your intuition--available to you so long as you learn how to love deeply and with your whole heart" (page 16). I have been reading about health, healing, and spirituality for more than 40 years, and I haven't found another book that speaks of this connection, nor so effectively describes and models what it is to be loving with oneself and others. Certainly this is the foundation not only for healing, but for living a peaceful, joyful, and fulfilling life. For anyone seeking healing for themselves, or for practitioners of the healing arts, I'd recommend What is Healing? as a terrific resource. It provides easily-grasped tools for healing on the deepest level, greater understanding of what we are as beings, and guidance toward unconditional love of self and for all that is.May this book bring all its readers the healing they need and want, and more!Steve Schechter

What is healing? This book is written by a healer who works with several clients. Catherine Carrigan teaches us how to care for our sacred souls. Carrigan approaches healing of the soul and body as a holistic effort reminding us that we are connected to one another and to our surroundings. When something is out of sync or not functioning to its highest level, we need to take a look within and see what may be blocking our normal energy flow. She graciously reminds us to keep our chakras open by facing life’s hard issues such as grief or loss. She shows how unconditional love and intuitive listening can help us repair and return to wholeness. This book is filtered with great wisdom and quotes from timeless thinkers and can be referred to over and over for guidance.

I have just read "What is Healing?" written by Catherine Carrigan, practitioner in whole body healing that embraces mental, psychological, emotional and physical elements of the whole person. The author's approach to this procedure is amazing. She narrates from a very personal level revealing events from her own life that led her to becoming a qualified practitioner. The grammar and syntax are simple, straightforward and very legible. Her style of writing will appeal to anyone who can read. Her format is very attractive. The reader can read any chapter as a separate nugget, or, follow sequentially from Chapter 1 to the conclusion of the book. She provides quality information that every person should be aware of and incorporating into their own lives. This is not a textbook, yet it contains age old information that would be considered textbook earned. The author is a very beautiful writer and any reader will be uplifted by its contents.

I totally loved this book. Catherine's stories are wonderful to read. The book is packed full of information and is very easy to understand. I'm sure I will refer back to it a lot. I would definitely recommend it!

Loved this book. Wonderful on Audible; so much so that I purchased the hard copy in order to refer to the wonderful reference sections. Very useful!

I have read What is Healing and was shocked at how much I have learned from it. It is a MUST READ. She should be thanked over and over again for giving such a simply put book to the world that is full of true knowledge not just big words. I have read numerous books about healing and holistic health but never a book that plainly stated everything so perfectly.Again, a must read for those who really want to dive into Healing.

Catherine is a genius. She makes the reader think "out of the box" and beyond. I enjoyed the way she follows her statements and beliefs either with examples or research. She can back up how she feels or sees things in life with true stories and examples of great human courage.I learned a lot from Catherine's book and will have to read it again so I can learn more!
