I was excited to find a photo book on Bhutan as there are few. Unfortunately the images in Dreaming Bhutan are poorly reproduced. Many photos almost look like they were taken on an old cell phone and printed by one of those online digital photo book companies. The content itself isn't incredibly unique nor does it capture the magnificent beauty of Bhutan's environment or the cultural richness of its people. I would not recommend this book, even for those desperate for a look into this hidden kingdom.

I love Bhutan! And I was hoping this book would help me to escape there in my mind. I was greatly disappointed. There was nothing special about the pictures. They were like all the other books I've looked at or read. I was hoping for something more insightful, something not everyone else has featured. She said it was not her goal to rewrite information about the culture, etc., that you could find in other books or on the internet. And yet, the book contains many quotes from other books rather than explain what the picture itself is about. Way too pricey for what you get. If it wasn't such a hassle to return it, I would. And I am not one to return any book.

Beautiful photography with Buddhist inspired captions. Gives insight into a hidden gem. Very enlightening and would recommend to any one interested in meditation, spirituality, introspection, and with the goal of enlightenment.
I once traveled to Bhutan a long time ago. The experience felt like vivid dream as the land, people and culture were truly reflective of its designation as "The Last Shangri La". Those who have been there would understand.Even in my own journals, I could not capture the moments the way the author has in Dreaming Bhutan. If you allow yourself a breath of stillness on a page you can feel the timeless magic of this ancient land so vast and distant from our everyday.Amazing as well that a western author would receive recognition from Bhutan's royal family.Beautiful work. Beautiful Dream.
Disclaimer: I find this book precious as it represents a number of things to me. For the purpose of this review, though, I'll focus on just one aspect of it, that of being a "travel book".So, what's the point of a travel book? Is it to educate, give a head start, uncover hidden gems, or help prepare a newcomer for what they might experience? Maybe it's all of the above, and more.Obviously, it's folly to try and convey the entirety of a country in a book, regardless of the quantity or quality of pictures and words. Ms. Grace knows this, and the choices she's made of what to include in the book are notable for this fact -- what I perceive of Bhutan, just from the contents of this book, are precious, profound, far more than her words and pictures can convey.I choose to believe that the author is very deliberate in what she's conveying here. What I take with me as I turn each page is an appetizer to a never-ending banquet, a glimpse at a door of a an infinite gallery, a peek at the tip of an iceberg. I get a taste of the values, ideals, and priorities of this country, and I find myself in love with Bhutan, longing to greet and embrace her at the jetway; I've gained an awareness that she has so much to offer that I would be wise to approach her with respect and willingness for fear of missing the beauty, depth, and love she has to offer.But, that's just me. I'd love to hear what _you_ thought of the book.
