About the Author

Charles Miller   Vern Heeren grew up in the Sacramento Valley of California. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics, with a minor in physics, at Occidental College, and completing his Master of Arts degree in mathematics at the University of California, Davis, he began a 38-year teaching career at American River College, teaching math and a little physics. He coauthored Mathematical Ideas in 1968 with office mate Charles Miller, and he has enjoyed researching and revising it over the years. It has been a joy for him to complete the thirteenth edition, along with long time coauthor John Hornsby, and now also with son Christopher. These days, besides pursuing his mathematical interests, Vern enjoys spending time with his wife Carole and their family, exploring the wonders of nature near their home in central Oregon.   John Hornsby joined the author team of Margaret Lial, Charles Miller, and Vern Heeren in 1988. In 1990, the sixth edition of Mathematical Ideas became the first of nearly 150 titles he has coauthored for Scott Foresman, HarperCollins, Addison-Wesley, and Pearson in the years that have followed. His books cover the areas of developmental and college algebra, precalculus, trigonometry, and mathematics for the liberal arts. He is a native and resident of New Roads, Louisiana.   Christopher Heeren is a native of Sacramento, California. While studying engineering in college, he had an opportunity to teach a math class at a local high school, and this sparked both a passion for teaching and a change of major. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree, both in mathematics, from California State University¿—Sacramento. Chris has taught mathematics at the middle school, high school, and college levels, and he currently teaches at American River College in Sacramento. He has a continuing interest in using technology to bring mathematics to life. This book is exactly what I needed for my math class. It is what was listed on the syllabus and it worked just as it was intended to. The examples were easy enough to follow along with and the concepts were explained well. My success in the course, however, was dependent on me paying attention in class and taking extra time out of my schedule to spend in the math lab getting extra instruction. I am not good at math and was able to do well not only because of this book, but it was a good starting point. I did not need an access code so that was not a concern of mine when I ordered this book. If your syllabus says this is the book that you need I would recommend that you get it because math is a course where having the book makes a big difference.

Mathematical Ideas for the most part is a 5 star book - IF you are working with the Pearson Math lab. The book and math lab are like hand and glove. For the unskilled in Math, this is not an easy course, however, they have done everything they can to get you engaged and clear minded to move ahead in this class.I'm using the loose leaf and it is AMAZING. I can make copies when I have to work with a tutor.I wish I could go loose leaf on everything.

Ill revisit this review when satisfaction is granted. The description of this product is misleading. One can purchase Mathematical Ideas 13th edition without being pulled in with "Plus MymathLab Access code." Spent 58 minutes with Venetia from Amazon who wasted my time and stated that they will review removal of product due to its false advertising. We'll see.

I would just get the access code to my labs plus instead of the book. You can access the pages for each lesson on the homework. I only used my book like twice. But I was able to resell it back to amazon for 100 so that was nice.

ACCESS CODE TO "MYMATHLAB" HAS BEEN USED AND INVALID!!! I NEED ONE ASAP!

While the book is what it says it is in horrible shape. I will be surprised if the thing does not fall apart while using it. I am definitely taking pictures to prove what Shape it was in when received. Honestly this thing should not even be able to be sent as a rental.

Very disappointing. I'd hoped this was a more informed and better researched work. The author never explains what evidence lead her to various reinterpretations of the goddess myths she retells. I do think it is possible that the general plots of some of the myths were changed over time to reflect changing ways of life, and her reinterpretations meant to recapture the meaning of the original goddess myths are not unbelievable. However, I would have been much more interested to hear HOW she arrived at those reinterpretations. Without that crucial information, they come off as fairy stories with happier endings. It would have been better if she had cited comparable goddess myths from other cultures that had contact with Europe that line up with her re-interpretations, and then contrasted them with the version that was handed down by the Greeks, etc., and correlated the alteration with changes in culture in the Greek world that did not occur in the areas where the myths retained more aspects of their original meaning.

It starts out with an interesting introduction that sheds light on how Ms. Spretnak researched these myths. This follows with chapters on Gaia, Pandora, Themis, Aphrodite, Triad of the Moon: Artemis, Selene & Hecate, Hera, Athena, Demeter and Persephone. The stories reveal the goddesses in their true forms before the coming of the Olympian gods. The last chapter tells an eye-opening story about Demeter and Persephone. Most people (myself included) are familiar with the mythic story of the rape of Persephone by the God of the Underworld. This book's message is that Goddess worship was around for at least 25,000 years--long before any other religion. These times were relatively peaceful times until invaders brought their warring "Zeus" god to Greece.I found this book to be interesting and it makes sense to me that the Goddess would be the first religion. I have studied the Hellenic Greek myths and it is obvious to me that the classical myths degrade women. Another point is that all of the classical writers were men. I am a believer in the theories revealed in Lost Goddesses of Early Greece. I highly recommend this book to those who wish to explore an unknown road in mythology. I think every female should read this book--it may be a life changing experience for some.

I learned so much from reading this. I never knew that the myths, legends and worship of these Goddesses existed many centuries before the Gods of Olympus. Very interesting.

I expected there to be a lot more scholarly research in this, but it's a very thin book that's basically the author's own personal re-imagining of Greek mythology. Still, the prose is beautiful and it's a charming read.

While all the books in this series are interesting, I have noticed a lot of misspelled words and the incorrect use of words. This indicates to me that there is little to none editing or proof reading.

Nice progression of the storyline. Each book gets better. Really leaves you hanging... Can't wait for the next one .

Grace Wilkinson puts the reader in the saddle or wielding a pitchfork along with the protagonist. Nothing has been handed to her, the stories are gritty, warm and I would imagine, create quite a loyal following. I've enjoyed every book written: ) Keep it up Grace!

Henry & Glenn Forever is a great conversation piece if you've got friends who know who Henry & Glenn are. Otherwise, it's not going to go over as well. Henry Rollins is coming to my area soon on his Capitalism speaking tour and I was planning on taking the book and trying to get him to sign it, but then I realized that meant I'd have to go see Henry Rollins speak so I just had some bum sign it. Come to think of it, that bum looked a lot like John Oates.

The comics were funny, relevant and adorable. Nice job Igloo Tornado. Hope to see plenty of more comics in the future.

BUT While I can forgive an error of 5 orders of magnitude in the size of an atomic nucleus, no chemist active in the 1940-1970 period should omit cobalt from a list of elements essential in human nutrition (We watched the B-12 synthesis happen). And it just bothers me to see an actual chemist say "92 natural elements" (astatine and francium, at least, shouldn't be included as natural; probably not technetium...unless you want to expand the list to include a few heavy actinides.) A chemist should say "about 90."But the book is really about the drug discovery stories. They're wonderful. Frankly, the one failure is my favorite of all.

Having done drug discovery in big pharma, I really enjoyed “Hallelujah Moments” for its pithy, but riveting stories, thoughtful and concise explanations of concepts and its attention to the people who made it happen.
