Edible Forest Gardens, Vol. 2: Ecological Design And Practice For Temperate-Climate Permaculture, by Dave Jacke Eric Toensmeier

Review

HortIdeas-We reviewed the first volume of this two-volume set in September 2005 HortIdeas--in fact, we were so impressed by it that we devoted that month's Book Reviews section entirely to it. Until Mycelium Running--another amazingly important and well-done book--appeared, we were considering doing the same this month for the second volume of Edible Forest Gardens, which is much thicker (by more than 270 pages!) than the first volume. The shorter length of this review certainly does not reflect the relative importance of the volumes--we recommend that anyone interested in experimenting with temperate-zone "gardening in the image of the forest" should study both.Although Volume 2 ostensibly emphasizes "practical" information building on the "theoretical" ideas in Volume 1, it is clear that both volumes are essentially theoretical. That's because (as we discussed in our review of Volume 1) nobody has yet convincingly shown the viability of forest gardening (relying heavily on perennial crops) in temperate areas as a sustainable alternative to conventional gardening (based mainly on annual crops). Jacke and Toensmeier are, admirably, attempting to disseminate ideas gathered from a variety of source that might enable such viability. Ultimately, at this stage development of temperate-zone forest gardening techniques, virtually all approaches are experimental and in need of validation. We simply do not currently know their limitations.Understanding that knowledge on "nest practices" for temperate-zone forest gardening needs to be established experimentally can be exciting for those willing and able to adopt the scientific attitude: no matter how they turn out, the results of an experiment, performed appropriately (meaning especially that adequate control treatments are provided), are never "bad." In other words, we think that would-be temperate-zone forest gardeners who are sincerely interested in helping to establish this novel form of agriculture should proceed by trying to test some of Jacke and Toensmeier's numerous design, site preparation, species choice and establishment, and management guidelines. We view Volume 2 of Edible Forest Gardens not as a recipe book for what works but rather as a compendium of possibilities for what could work--an invitation par excellence to experimentation instead of complacency. Right on! (Greg Williams)Plants and Gardens News--Patricia Jonas, Brooklyn Botanic Garden-But even if you grow enough organic food to feed yourself, are you doing what's best for the ecosystem? "Many drawbacks of modern agriculture persist in organic farming and gardening," Dave Jacke and Eric Toensmeier write in Edible Forest Gardens, because they do not "mimic the structure of natural systems, only selected functions." Even Quail Hill Farm members are still harvesting mostly annual crops grown in plowed fields. Jacke and Toensmeier offer a radical vision for stepping out of the conceptual continuum of conventional agriculture and organic farming. They point to the productivity of temperate forests--which is twice that of agricultural land in terms of net calories--and take that as their design model. Building on Robert Hart's classic book, Forest Gardening, and incorporating permaculture practice, Jacke and Toensmeier propose a garden where many species of edible perennial plants are grown together in a design that mimics forest structure and function.Edible Forest Gardens is an ambitious two-volume work whose influence should extend well beyond ecologists and permaculturists and, in the best of all outcomes, reach into the mainstream. Volume one lays out the "Ecological Vision and Theory for Temperate Climate Permaculture," and it also includes a very useful analysis of existing forest gardens (one only 50 by 90 feet) and a tantalizing 30-page appendix of "top 100" species. As of this writing, volume two, which focuses on practical design and maintenance considerations, is just being released, but on the evidence of volume one, I have no doubt the set will be an indispensable reference for gardeners and farmers for decades."When people have food gardens," the authors write, "they usually are tucked out of sight and out of view of the neighbors. They rely on external inputs of energy, nutrients, insect and disease controls, and water and are based primarily on annual plants. For some reason, growing food is considered unsightly, unseemly, possibly antisocial, and in some towns and cities, illegal! The tremendous infrastructure we have built in our cities and towns reflects a culture and horticulture of separation and isolation." The consequences of such attitudes about growing food have been disastrous, and each of us can contribute to the repair effort. Jacke and Toensmeier say that the principles of forest gardening can be applied even in a tiny urban yard or on a rooftop. Containers of edible perennials and annuals on a rooftop are not most farmers' idea of agriculture, but I grow nearly 20 percent of the authors' top 100 species and intend to look for ways to take this small start much further. And what about chocolate and oranges? Clearly there are foods that cannot be grown in a temperate forest. "We do not expect forest gardening to replace regular gardening or the foods we know and love," the authors admit. "Just how far we can take forest gardening in supplying food for ourselves is not yet determined." Finding the answer may be the most optimistic work gardeners and farmers can do."A tree de force! A must-have set of books for anyone serious about polyculture, integrated organic garden and landscape design, permaculture in the temperate zones and, of course, food forests. The charts of condensed information alone are worth the price of admission. The best book on these topics in years Keep these books within arm's reach at all times!"--Robert Kourick, author of Designing and Maintaining Your Edible Landscape Naturally

"While the scope of the permaculture concept has expanded from its initial focus on forest gardening, it is exciting to see how the authors have brought together the ecological theory and practise necessary to further this aspect of the permaculture agenda." David Holmgren, cofounder of permaculture and author Permaculture: Principles and Practices Beyond Sustainability "...Perhaps as important as it's applied ecological contributions is its psychological gifts of hope and visions of achievable, more meaningful ways of living in a post-oil world." Dr. Stuart Hill Foundation Chair of Social Ecology, University of Western Sydney, Australia "Your book blows me away! So much work, so much depth. I hear the voice of this good and gentle earth in Edible Forest Gardens . . . and am excited to keep reading more!" This was a required text for a course on Ecological Design that I was taking. It is a fabulous book. My instructor chose this volume because it includes more of the design process than Volume 1 (which was not required, but is on my wish list for reference materials). Dave Jacke takes you through the fundamentals of site analysis, evaluating opportunities and constraints and working through the design process. The appendixes alone are probably worth the cost of the book. His nectary calendar is extremely useful for trying to identify plants that will provide food for various pollinators; the species by function chart helps you easily see the best nitrogen fixers and dynamic accumulators; his species lifespan list gives you a reference point for how often you will either need to purchase or regenerate a given species...This is the first time I've ever felt strongly compelled to highlight and mark in my book. Normally, I sell my books back, but this one is a definite KEEPER! I have highlights and stickies throughout marking my most frequently referenced charts. The only caveat/issue I can even think of is... the plants/species are more tailored to the North Eastern United States and less to the Western United States where I live... A great number of the species from the northeast are naturalized here or will grow here, but that may be a limitation/problem for some people.

You know the adage "Hindsight is 20/20"? Well, had I known that information I'd learned in the past 10+ books I've purchased regarding food forestry/permaculture would not only be contained in this book but expanded upon, I would have saved myself hundreds of dollars and weeks of reading. I always balked at the cost of these books and just kept them in my my "Maybe" list. Believe me, I'm kicking myself. The appendices alone are worth the cost of the book. I am the type of person that likes to be told in detail what I should do until I feel confident enough to experiment and come up with my own methods. Especially if I have invested so much time and money to achieve a certain goal. With this book, all of my fears have been assuaged and I feel I have the knowledge and skills to carry out my dreams of a sustainable edible forest garden.I cannot recommend this book enough!

This is the perfect companion for Gaia's Garden and Permaculture: A Designer's Manual (PADM). If I could only have two books on Permaculture it would be Gaia's Garden and Edible Forest Gardens Vol. 2. The tables in this book are worth the price and will save untold hours of research trying to find the right plants for my zone, soil type and how they fit into my plantings. Want to know what nitrogen fixers work in your zone? This is the book. Want to know what bioaccumulators can work well in your soil? This is the book. There are over 600 different forest garden trees, shrubs, and other plants broken down by their role in your design. Having to do this research on my own would triple my design time. I love this book. I've read Vol. 1 of this series and while it is good, I consider it redundant if you already have PADM. While it has some good info in it, I think Vol. 2 has much more to contribute if you already have PADM or Gaia's Garden (or any other of the great permaculture basics books). If you have money to throw around sure, by both volumes, but if you are like me and paying college textbook pricing for a book is hard to justify, trust me that this book is worth the cost.

I like the species matrix charts and certain sections, like the excellent coverage of beneficial microbes. I expected this book to have more specific "Design and Practice" information. It does contain lots of specifics, but is easily 70% basic theory and concepts. This book has the style and format of a college text book. This book is going to seem dry and unnecessarily wordy for most dirt-in-the-fingernails practitioners of permaculture. The charts and index make it an invaluable edible forest species reference manual, but it's not a great book to read cover-to-cover, and I often wonder while reading it, if the author has practical field experience with the concepts presented,

It's no surprise to learn that Dave and Eric worked for seven years to write the Edible Forest Gardens books; the depth and breadth of permaculture knowledge that they present is incredible. Although I've heard some say that these books are not an easy read, I've found them to be fascinating, enjoyable and indispensable.I started my journey into permaculture with Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway, then decided to plant an edible forest in the back yard, so I purchased Volume 2 of Edible Forest Gardens, since it covers the practical consideration of forest gardening. Although this book is written so it can stand on its own, I also highly recommend volume 1, which focuses on the ecological vision and theory for temperate climate permaculture. Highly recommended!

This book is amazing. Even just the appendices in the back is worth the price of the book. If you're interested in permaculture, this is a must buy.

If you want to become an expert in edible forest garden design (as well as an expert in general design in your own right) then study this book and its companion volume 1. You won't regret the investment, and neither will the rest of society, after all is said and done!

This book is a tome. Wish it had more pictures, but you can't beat the info!

Gavin de Becker has produced a landmark work in the dual fields of criminal psychology and self defense. I was recommended "The Gift of Fear" by a colleague with experience in law enforcement: he claimed it was the best overall book on self preservation and personal safety he had ever read, and while it is excellent for both sexes, it is especially valuable for women. I purchased the book for a female friend on his recommendation, and I read it as well. The book is detailed, personal, practical, and poignant. The book extols the value of intuition (and resultant fear) as a predictor of potential violent or harmful behavior. Although my original intent in purchasing the book was a concern about violence from outsiders, the area of the book that I believe is most useful (especially to women) is violence from intimate partners. I found the sections on predicting violent behavior from people known to a victim to be the most harrowing yet most practical in the book. One thing that runs as a theme through the book (again, especially useful to women) is that controlling behavior in any relationship is an extremely serious warning. Although most controlling males don't become violent, the likelihood of violence from them is dramatically higher than in a healthy relationship; further, even if the scenarios don't escalate to violence, control issues can manifest themselves in a variety of other awful ways that are only touched on here.In this book de Becker makes the case that intuition is actually reasoned, but it is a function performed so fast in our brains that we are unaware exactly why we have such feelings. I think the book argues persuasively that we ignore such warnings at our own risk and that while we may be more comfortable with reason and logic, intuition is an invaluable ally, as is genuine fear (which is altogether different from worry or anxiety.)Although I bought this book for a very close friend for a very specific reason, I am going to purchase several more copies for other people I love and care about. Rarely do I recommend a self-help book unequivocally, but this is one of those times. Buy this book, read it yourself, and pass it along to people you love. This is a fantastic book, and I wholeheartedly endorse it.

I spent 20 years on the streets in local law enforcement. I always felt that the Temporary Restraining Orders (TRO) we served on stalkers and spousal abusers were as worthless, in most cases, as the paper they were written on. Usually they simply served as a salve to sooth our justice system's guilt over unwillingness or inability to take strong and immediate action, or develop alternative solutions. As Gavin de Becker so aptly points out, when it comes to committed stalkers and abusers, not only are they not afraid of a piece of paper, it incents them to even a higher degree of activity and perhaps violence. The author makes an excellent case that we should be much more judicious in evaluating such cases against a threat matrix and respond in different ways depending on the nature of the threat.I also greatly appreciate the author's discussion of the origins of fear and how important it has been in allowing mankind to develop. In addition to the twenty years I spent in law enforcement, I am also a Certified Body Language trainer and teach the power of nonverbal communication. As research has shown, what we call women's intuition is in reality the fact that women, on average, are far better at picking up nonverbal cues than men. That "intuition" was absolutely essential for the females of our species to survive in a very hostile world, where they were of slighter stature and needed to quickly detect threats around them. As the primary caregiver to children they also needed to be able to effectively interpret the cues and needs of infants and small children before spoken language. One interesting study involved showing short film clips with the sound turned off to groups of men and women. Women scored an incredible 87% accuracy in evaluating the situation shown in the video. Afraid guys we only scored 42%. fMRI scans reveal women use 14-16 regions of their brains during communication, while men only 4-6 areas (most women probably would dispute giving us that much credit-:)In modern society, in the interest of being "polite", we often suppress our natural intuition, our gut feelings. Back in my police career we didn't even have a term called Body Language. We only knew it as "street-smarts". One of my great fears has to do with my beautiful wife's suppression of her natural intuition around strangers, in the interest of being polite and non-judgemental. The nature of my our respective careers requires us to live in a dense urban area, surrounded by all sorts of threats. Dark parking lots, underground garages, elevators and streets filled with street people and drug addicts. While our building is very secure, once you are on the streets it's a whole different ball game. She has terrific intuition when she uses it. She is like a perfectly honed tuning fork when she is willing to trust her intuition, but due to her kind and trusting nature, she often suppresses it in the interest of being all-inclusive and accepting.Gavin de Becker's loud message to women, Trust your gut, Don't suppress your intuition, Don't worry about hurting some stranger's feelings is a powerful one. It is my hope that my wife and every woman will be willing to read the book, reflect on all the powerful stories in The Gift of Fear, including the author's personal story.

This book is an invaluable resource for women. The 4th chapter by itself is worth the price of the book alone. Titled "Survival Signals" this chapter will teach you the sophisticated manipulations that criminal predators use to try and gain control over you.You will learn about: "forced teaming"- establishing premature trust based on sharing a predicament. "charm and niceness" (remember, niceness does not equal goodness.) "too many details"- When people lie what they say doesn't sound credible to them so they keep talking. "typecasting"- Involves a slight insult to get the woman to respond by engaging verbally with the crim-pred. "loan sharking"- (it's hard to tell a creep to eff off when he's done something helpful and now you are indebted to him.) "discounting of the word NO"- refusal to respect the word no is a signal a crim-pred is trying to control you or refusing to relinquish control. There is much more detail in this chapter, and I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to recognize these "interviewing techniques" that criminal predators use. Thank you Gavin de Becker for writing such an important and informational book.

Effective Supervision: Supporting the Art and Science of Teaching

From the Inside Flap

In Effective Supervision, Robert J. Marzano, Tony Frontier, and David Livingston show school and district-level administrators how to set the priorities and support the practices that will help all teachers become expert teachers. Their five-part framework is based on what research tells us about how expertise develops. When these five conditions are attended to in a systematic way, teachers do improve their skills: * A well-articulated knowledge base for teaching * Opportunities for teachers to practice specific strategies or behaviors and to receive feedback * Opportunities for teachers to observe and discuss expertise * Clear criteria for success and help constructing professional growth and development plans * Recognition of the different stages of development progressing toward expertise. The focus is on developing a collegial atmosphere in which teachers can freely share effective practices with each other, observe one another's classrooms, and receive focused feedback on their teaching strategies. The constructive dynamics of this approach always keep in sight the aim of enhancing students' well-being and achievement. As the authors note, "The ultimate criterion for expert performance in the classroom is student achievement. Anything else misses the point."

#81,902 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

CAUTION: I am a practicing administrator with extensive experience observing and providing feedback to teachers.Teacher evaluation is a hot topic right now. I get it. We all do, and while I appreciate the depth of history about teacher supervision that is covered in this book, there is not much here to help practitioners of teacher evaluation get better at providing meaningful feedback to teachers. For instance the authors write, "If student achievement is not linked to teacher evaluation, teachers have little incentive to develop into experts." They got that one wrong. This is simply not true.Teachers don't need a ranking from a state test in order to be motivated to be an expert. There is not a one-to-one correlation between expertise as a teacher and student scores on large scale, summative, standardized tests. The large scale tests that districts and states have been using lately to call out the effectiveness of individual teachers is a completely flawed model. Those tests were never designed to measure the expertise of individual teachers. They were designed to measure the overall quality, progress, and improvement of the system (school or district) in general. The fact that states are using these tests for high stakes (diploma requirements) is not an good excuse or a best practice. However, the recent practice has increased student motivation to do their best on the state tests.Side note: Interesting.Expert teachers inspire their learners, and inspiration is hard to measure. The seed of inspiration doesn't bear fruit in less than 9 months. However, even experts need meaningful feedback to improve, and experts are always improving. Intrinsically motivated teachers are no different. They will seek out feedback and training. Student learning is an important part of the effective teacher equation, and any teacher worth their salt can rattle off (and show you) a variety of ways (summative and formative, formal and informal) they measure student learning, achievement, and growth. The key to developing teachers into experts does not rely on more or better tests that "link." It relies on finding people who care and providing them exceptional training and support. FYI: that equation works for other school leaders as well.

Marzano looks at 40+ aspects of effective teaching with his usual sense of balance and realism. He offers a clear, multi-tiered rubric for teacher evaluation with an emphasis on teacher growth and critical insights into teaching and student learning. This book could easily begin and end the conversation for performance based evaluation being held between teachers and principals across the nation. As a 26 year teacher (NBCT) and a brand new principal this book provides me and others the place to begin the dialogue that will lead to classroom excellence for all teachers. No teacher will ever achieve the highest levels of performance in all 41 areas, but every self-critical educator will be able to to affirm his strengths and improve his "developing" areas. Both teachers and principals will benefit by studying this book even if they are unfamiliar with Marzano's extensive body of work. This book would best be used collaboratively in an atmosphere of safety, trust, and professionalism with a goal of improving classroom instruction over several years.(Politicians, please pay heed to Marzano's wisdom when he alludes to the reality that schools do not change profoundly in less than a decade and teachers do not hit their greatest understanding of teaching until after their twelfth year in the classroom and beyond. It would be best for all concerned if teachers did not make laws and politicians stayed out of classrooms.) Principals, I strongly urge you to read Kim Marshal's book first and apply Marzano's work to the fourth and final area Marshal addresses. Teachers on professional growth plans or plans for improvement will find this work helpful and insightful.

Nothing new here. Perhaps the best use of this book is as a reminder of what we all know and use. Good teaching is good teaching. This book can be useful to administrators who are poor evaluators. There is nothing in here that is not in Marzano's Art and Science of Teaching.

Very nice

great

I am late writing this review, but better late than never. Book was as described. Also, quick shipping. Thanks!

New administrator and seasoned leaders will benefit from this book. If they are in high stakes and performance based settings, this text allows historical and leading to contemporary views in staff evaluation models.

Well written and informative. The author is not my favorite person, as I have seen public education devastated as a result of his research, but this book is an appropriate read for burgeoning administrators.

Review

**STARRED REVIEW** "Readers will be swept up in Kiely's musical prose as Teddy learns about love, romance, forgiveness, and reconciliation." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)**STARRED REVIEW** “A sophisticated story about the power of love, music, and making amends. Deeply personal and universal at the same time, Kiely’s truly lovely tale should find a home in every YA collection.”  (School Library Journal, starred review)** STARRED REVIEW ** “poetic, lovely, and profound…Satisfying and full of longing, the book features deep feelings, full hearts, and heartbreak. It speaks to the importance of forging connections and the power of story to capture memories and meaning.” (VOYA)“Brendan Kiely’s writing soars off the page, ultimately landing someplace between heartwarming and heart-aching (but definitely somewhere in the heart). Here is a book about music, friendship, first and final loves, and all the blue notes in between. Indeed, The Last True Love Story may be exactly that.” (David Arnold, bestselling author of Mosquitoland)“As cool as it is tender, this poignant story about the power of love thrums with classic rock and aches with honesty. I was so moved by Hendrix’s journey and,as a brown girl who loves music, I was completely invested in Corrina--one of my new favorite characters in all of YA. Authentic and beautifully written, The Last True Love Story will truly capture your heart.” (Jasmine Warga, author of My Heart And Other Black Holes)“A beautiful, searing journey into the American heartland. This book, like an epic road trip, is full of difficult truths, great music, and deeply human companions.” (Daniel José Older, award-winning author of Shadowshaper and the Bone Street Rumba series.)"Genuine, thoughtful, and heartbreaking, The Last True Love Story is the kind of book that kickstarts an awakening in your soul and will resonate with readers for years to come." (Julie Murphy, New York Times Bestselling author of Dumplin' and Side Effects May Vary)“Some authors write with their hearts first and their heads second. Some the other way around. But Brendan Kiely manages, as always, to strike a skillful and delicate balance between deep, intellectual coming-of-age and poetic, emotional drama. The Last True Love Story stands in a league of its own both in regards to the way it portrays its teenage protagonists and the way it tells the very personal, tragic story of Alzheimer’s. If the point of living is learning how to love, to quote Gpa, then I think we should all start by reading Mr. Kiely’s beautiful novel.” (John Corey Whaley, Printz and Morris winner, National Book Award finalist, and author of Highly Illogical Behavior)“The Last True Love Story is a tender multi-generational story that's as much about the meaning of family as it is about falling in love. There’s plenty of delightful adventure, but what I loved most about this book is its respect for moments that can be both quiet and life changing at once.” (Ava Dellaira, author of Love Letters to the Dead)“A quirky, romantic, and satisfying story.”  (Publishers Weekly)

I'm a huge fan of young adult literature. 4 out of 5 books that I read are written for younger audiences, but honestly, they're my favorite books to read, perhaps because so many of them really touch on real life issues. The Last True Love Story is a story about just that: love. But it's not the story you might expect. Yes, a young romance does blossom between Teddy (Hendrix) and Corrina. But to me, the true love story is the one that exists between Teddy and his ailing grandfather, Gpa, and Gpa and his late wife.Anyone who has known and loved someone diagnosed with Alzheimer's knows what a devastating and cruel disease it can be. It steals everything most precious to the individual; memories, recognition, a sense of awareness. And it steals the person away from his or her loved ones. In The Last True Love Story, Teddy breaks Gpa out of his assisted living facility to embark on a cross-country road trip with Corrina in an attempt to help Gpa relive his memories of Gma one last time. This is a moving and deeply personal book, one that fans of young adult literature and I think particularly fans of John Green, will enjoy and appreciate.

What a beautiful story of love across the generations! Kiely deftly captures the complexities of love from various perspectives in life in prose that is both elegant and accessible. The three main characters, the teenagers Hendrix and Corrina and the grandfather GPA, are all well-developed as the novel moves towards a satisfying conclusion. Though written for young adults,as an adult I found the novel an enjoyable and emotionally satisfying read which I am recommending to friends of all ages!

The third brilliant work from a new master. Keily captures adolescence better than anyone since Salinger. If you haven't read his first two works thenyou're cheating yourself.

Bought it for a YA class and I loved it. It was one of the best books my professor assigned out of the 30.

Well written. Loved the premise of trying to fulfill a grandpa's last request.

One of the first things that caught my eye was the back cover of this book. David Arnold, author of Mosquitoland was quoted as saying, "Brendan Kiely's writing soars off the page" and I thought to myself, oh yea? Well, we'll see. Well, I did see, and I am mightily impressed. This book had me from the very first page and I never wanted to put it down. The struggles of the young, coming to terms with who we are, how we fit in...it's all here. The struggles of the elderly is a predominant theme also. As Gpa (our elderly character) struggles with his increasingly failing memory, his grandson stuggles too, as he comes to grips with how his life is changing, how his one connection to the unknown figure of his father, is fading quickly. His family circle is diminishing and he feels scared and alone. Enter Corrina, a seemingly self assured musician who has struggles of her own. They undertake a trip across the country to bring Gpa back to where he first lived with his beloved wife in the hopes he can capture those magical moments before they disappear forever. This book of becoming, of acceptance and the dawning awareness of the young when they discover the world is a big place and there is much going on beyond their own scope and vision is an exceptional read. I was drawn in immediately and loved each character. Their flaws made them so real and relatable. I think this could easily be adapted for the big screen!I've seen some reviews that say to leave this book for the youngsters. I just can't agree with that. There are lots of insights and honestly, I liked being reminded of what it felt like to be a confused teenager, even if just for a little while. This is the perfect book for a teenager's summer reading list. *I would say 14 and up.

I love 'road trip' novels. Anything could happen on the way 'there'. Where is 'there'? Why is the trip being made? As one character often says in Brendan Kiely's new novel, The Last True Love Story - 'You have to respect the road trip."Hendrix's beloved Gpa is slipping away from him - Alzheimer's is stealing his memories. Hendrix has been writing down the stories of Gpa and Gma (loved these inserted tales), but when Gpa says he wants to go 'home', Hendrix impulsively decides to sign him out of the retirement home and drive from LA to Ithaca, New York. Problem is he doesn't have a license. He's got a car - his mom is out of the country and won't notice that her 'bug' (or Gpa) are missing for at least a few days.Corrina is seventeen as well, but does have her license. Both Hendrix and Corrina are lonely and out of step with the rest of their peer groups, but sense something in each other - kindred spirits? And so the road trip is on with each character having their own reasons to head out.I loved all three main characters. Corrina's smart mouth and 'acting out' hide an insecure young woman trying to find her place in her family and society. But when the mask comes off, she's a kind, intuitive person. Hendrix too, is struggling with unresolved family questions. His father is dead and no one really talks about him. There may be answers about 'Dead Dad' in Ithaca as well. Gpa affected me the most. Alzheimer's has touched my family as well. The glimpses into Gpa's life and his love for his deceased wife make for some touching and poignant scenes. And the times he forgets are well (and sadly) depicted. The relationship between Hendrix and his Gpa is a joy to read. The budding relationship between Hendrix and Corrina is sweet and believable. Family dynamics are also explored from many viewpoints. These three are not just navigating the road, but life as well.Music is such a big part of any road trip. I ended up jotting down many of Corrina's play lists - rock and roll classics with a healthy dose of new stuff.Great opening prologue....."I'd feel like this is all coming to the end, except I can't. Because it can't be. It can't be the end, not for Gpa, not for Corrina, and not for me, because it is out here on the road in the middle of nowhere that I have finally come to understand what my grandfather means when he says that the point of living is learning how to love.".....and some great endings too - lines, songs and stories - that I'll let you discover. And yes, I can absolutely see The Last True Love Story as a movie.

IntroductionAdolescence is one of the greatest periods of change during our lifetime. Changes occur in all realms of human development—physical, emotional, intellectual, even spiritual. Body shapes are changing, independent thinking begins, and teenagers take on the social values and roles of adulthood. It’s a time of new discoveries and opportunities, but also of anxiety and stress. On the physical level, adolescence brings on rapid growth and hormonal change. The onset of adolescence is typically associated with the start of puberty and ends when an adult identity and adult behaviours are accepted. The World Health Organization and the Canadian Paediatric Society define adolescence as the period between the ages of 10 and 19 years, and for the purposes of this book, I have adopted this definition. In the chapters that follow I provide nutrient recommendations for preteens and teens aged 9 to 13 years, and older teenagers, those aged 14 to 19 years. Wherever I refer to “teens,” I mean to include preteens, unless I specify otherwise. Most girls begin their growth spurts between the ages of 10 and 13 years, while most boys grow more between the ages of 12 and 15 years. Nearly every organ in the body develops during these times of faster growth, including bones, muscles, and sex organs. That’s why the teenage body demands more energy, iron, zinc, and calcium than at any other age.Fortunately, once the growth spurt begins, teenagers’ appetites rev up and they begin to eat more food. And if you have teenage boys, I’m sure you find that keeping the fridge and cupboards full is almost a full-time job. If teenagers make nutritious food choices, they can satisfy both their increased hunger and higher nutrient needs.Yet, living in the teenage world makes adolescents particularly vulnerable to poor eating habits. As teens assert themselves and become more independent from parents and teachers, their food habits change. Teenagers have more control over their eating habits and more access to foods outside the home, compared to younger children. Lifestyle changes such as having a part-time job, getting a driver’s licence, and dating mean that teenagers will spend more time away from home—and from the healthy meals you prepare. Pressure from friends, coaches, and the media can also affect a teenager’s food choices. Many of my clients know that what’s good for them is also good for their children. As is the case for adults, teenagers’ eating habits can affect their energy level, physical fitness, mental performance, and health. Sure, teenagers are growing and need more calories, but there’s no good reason for those calories to come from foods high in fat and sugar.Over the past 15 years, I have counselled many teenagers about nutrition. I’ve helped overweight teens slim down and navigate the fat and sugar traps on cafeteria and camp menus. I’ve educated teenagers about healthy vegetarian diets, and I’ve advised others about sport-specific nutrition. There’s never been as much demand for nutrition information as there is today. Teenagers and adults are more aware of nutrition than they were even a decade ago. My clients come to me looking for sound, credible, and relevant information about how their food choices affect their well-being.It’s a confusing world out there, sometimes even for a nutritionist like me. Conflicting news stories about nutrition, fad diets, and a growing number of “magic bullet” supplements can make even the most nutrition-savvy person’s head spin. Given today’s overwhelming amount of health information, it can be a tough task to make sense of the foods you eat.Growing Up Overfed and Undernourished—and at Risk of Heart DiseaseOnly recently have researchers, health professionals, and, subsequently, the media taken an interest in the nutritional health of our children. It’s unfortunate that it’s taken an epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes to get our attention. Perhaps we ought to call it the North American Paradox—the fact that we live in an affluent society with access to medical care, nutritious foods, and plenty of open green space, yet so many of our youth are growing up overweight, undernourished, and sedentary. What’s more, today we’re witnessing in teenagers the health problems that accompany both over- and under-nutrition. Risk factors for heart disease, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes, as well as iron deficiency anemia and rickets, a bone disease caused by a lack of vitamin D, are becoming more prevalent among adolescents. If there is any time in a person’s life when he or she is expected to be in the best health, it is during youth. Yet, consider the fact that almost one-third of Canadian adolescents rate their health as no better than “good.”1 Adolescents who are obese, physically inactive, or who eat a poor diet are more likely to convey negative views of their health.Overweight and obesity is a major concern among Canadian youth. Over the past two decades, rates of obesity have quadrupled among children. In 2001, 5% of kids aged 12 to 19 were considered obese, with the prevalence among boys almost double that of girls. And it seems that many more teens are on their way to obesity: 17% of boys and 10% of girls are now classified as overweight.2 Statistics for younger children are even more alarming. These numbers are frightening for a few reasons. For starters, obese adolescents are more likely to become obese adults than are their normal-weight peers. It’s estimated that 70% of obese teenagers will remain obese in adulthood. Obese teenagers are also more likely to suffer physical and psychological problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, back and knee problems, low self-esteem, and depression. And finally, adolescent weight problems (along with physical inactivity and poor eating habits) have long-term implications for health in adulthood. It’s well documented that obesity increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory illness, and certain cancers. What’s truly worrisome is that so many of these so-called adult diseases are now affecting young people. We are learning that adolescents are not immune to obesity, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, or high blood pressure, conditions that weren’t even on the radar screen when it came to adolescent health in the early 1990s because they were considered adult health problems. Indeed, what was only recently called “adult onset diabetes” is now referred to as “type 2 diabetes” because of its diagnosis in children as young as nine years old. It’s been said that children growing up in North America today are at risk of becoming the first generation in modern memory that will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. The reason: an epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes.Physical inactivity, poor eating habits, and parental influences all have a role to play in youth obesity (not to mention nutrient deficiencies in iron, calcium, and vitamin D). Today, only 4 out of 10 teens aged 12 to 19 are physically active, with boys being more active than girls.3 (Kids considered inactive accumulated less than one hour of walking per day.) Our schools certainly aren’t helping our children be physically active. According to a 2002 study, one-half of Canadian schools have a policy of daily physical education, yet only 16% of schools comply. And the number of gym classes offered each week declines with increasing grade.4If kids aren’t spending their time being active, what are they doing? Most are sedentary after school, doing homework, reading, surfing the internet, watching television, or playing video games. Research suggests that teens who spend more than two hours each day in front of the television have a significantly lower chance of becoming and remaining active. There’s a well-documented link between screen time and body weight. Studies show that watching the tube and playing video or computer games increase the likelihood of being overweight or obese by as much as 61%. On the other hand, participating in sports and other physical activity lowers the odds by 10% to 43%.When it comes to nutrition, it’s hard to get a handle on how Canadian adolescents are eating because so little research has been done. That’s why I conducted the What’s on Your Plate? High School Nutrition Survey in the spring of 2004. With the help of the dietitians at Chartwells School Dining Services, a member of Compass Group Canada, and the Research Services Unit in the Department of Public Health at the University of Toronto, I asked 1046 Canadian high school students, grades 8 through 12, about their food and exercise habits, as well as about as their nutrition concerns. It seems that teenagers are quite interested in nutrition. Of the students surveyed, 78% rank nutrition as somewhat or very important when deciding what to eat. A survey conducted in 2002 revealed that 69% of Canadian youth were “slightly” to “far more concerned” with the quality of food they were eating than they were two years earlier. So many teens are aware of nutrition and food issues. So far, so good. But when I asked high school students about their diets, many came up short in the fruit, vegetable, dairy, and whole-grain departments. Four out of 10 teenagers eat fewer than two vegetable servings per day, and one-half of those surveyed consume no more than two servings of milk. Whole grains aren’t that popular, either. One-quarter of the teens say they never opt for 100% whole-wheat or multigrain breads, while 3 out of 10 say they always do.So why the disconnect? An overwhelming majority of teenagers say nutrition is important, and yet so many have diets that lack nutrient-dense foods. And an increasing number are becoming overweight. It’s challenging for teenagers to eat well in our modern world. We live in a toxic food environment, an environment in which we have easy access to a huge variety of highly processed—and inexpensive—foods, all served up in super-sized portions. What’s more, these high-fat and sugary foods are marketed directly to teenagers and young children.Have you ever checked out the menu at your son or daughter’s school cafeteria? At summer camp? I encourage you to do so. When I review these menus for my teenage clients, I am usually mortified at what we are feeding our younger generation. Menus geared to teens are often heavy on the white bread, white rice, white potatoes, and sugar, and light on the vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and vegetarian protein options. (Spaghetti and meatless tomato sauce does not cut it—where are the beans and tofu?) Ask your teenager and she’ll tell you that healthy food items are hard to find in the cafeteria lineup. And the few choices that do exist—ham sandwiches on brown bread or bruised fruit—are usually hidden among the fries and soft drinks.Shouldn’t we, as adults, know better in this age of skyrocketing obesity rates, trans fats, and high glycemic starches? The good news is that we are starting to smarten up. High school cafeterias are changing their menus, prompted by pressure from parents and school boards. Chartwells Dining Services, a member of Compass Group Canada, which holds the market share in contracted high school food service, is committed to bringing healthy foods to the forefront. Students are now seeing more healthy options: whole-grain wrap sandwiches, salads made to order, stir-fries, and grab-and-go veggies. The company is also promoting water and milk in their combo meals rather than sugary pop. And it is piloting healthy eating messages on vending machines. And there are more signs of change. Provincial governments are cracking down on school boards, mandating the ban of junk foods in vending machines on school premises. The premier of Ontario has even talked about enforcing daily physical education in schools. Fast food joints have added grilled chicken, entree salads, and fresh fruit to their menus. That’s a smart move, since adolescents are eating more meals at fast food outlets and restaurants than ever before. Large food manufacturers also seem to be making moves to stem childhood obesity. Kraft Foods announced in January 2004 that it would stop television advertisements for the likes of Kool-Aid, Oreo, and Chips Ahoy! cookies during programming targeted to kids aged 6 to 11 years.Although it’s becoming easier for our teenagers to choose healthy foods when they eat away from home, healthy eating habits begin at home. Parents play an important role in shaping their teenager’s health and nutrition habits. We know that overweight among parents is a major factor in excess weight for adolescent boys and girls. Among girls aged 12 to 19 who lived with an obese parent, 18% are overweight and 10% are obese. The situation is similar for boys: 22% of boys with an obese parent are overweight, and 12% are obese.5Aside from weight, other parental habits influence those of their children. These include physical activity, smoking, and eating habits. Canadian teenagers who report a parent who is inactive during leisure time are more likely to be inactive themselves. And if the parent smokes or eats fruits and vegetables infrequently, the teenager is likely to mirror these behaviours.Clearly, many factors influence the eating habits of teenagers. Another worth mentioning is the lack of knowledge about nutrition. Healthy eating receives little attention in secondary schools. While some teenagers spend a few classes discussing Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating, others don’t receive any nutrition education at all. It’s time we start educating our youth about the importance of good nutrition. Nutrition topics need to be added to the school curriculum. We need to start teaching our kids important life skills such as grocery shopping, label reading, and meal planning. By becoming knowledgeable about nutrition and health, adolescents will be much more likely to take an interest in the foods they eat and make wiser choices when they eat away from home, be it the school cafeteria, the fast food restaurant, or the university dorm. And who knows, maybe as parents you’ll be offered more enthusiastic help in the kitchen! That’s where my book comes in—to help educate parents and adolescents about healthy eating in today’s fast-paced world. There isn’t a book about nutrition out there that is specifically geared to adolescents. Sure, there are weight loss books for teens. But there’s a whole lot more to teen nutrition than weight control strategies. Why This Book Is for All Parents of Preteens and TeenagersTo help determine what topics I needed to include in this book, I asked teenagers about their eating habits, their nutrition and food concerns, and their exercise habits. In this book, you’ll find information that’s relevant for all teenagers. In Part 1, Nutrition Basics, I include essential nutrition information for everyone. You’ll learn all about vitamins and minerals (including supplements), carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. You’ll also find a chapter on daily water requirements, which includes sections on caffeine and alcohol consumption. But that’s just the start. In Part 2, Making Healthy Food Choices, I give you plenty of practical nutrition advice on helping your teen translate the nutrition basics into healthy food choices—at the grocery store, at the school cafeteria, and the campus dining hall, in ethnic restaurants, and at fast food outlets. You’ll even find kitchen tips to help busy teenagers prepare their own healthy meals and snacks.Part 3, Nutrition for Health and Fitness, offers strategies for kids who need a little more personal nutrition coaching. You’ll learn which nutrients need to be paid close attention to if your teenage son or daughter is a lacto-ovo vegetarian or a vegan. I also include a vegetarian food guide to help teens plan a nutritionally adequate diet. There’s a chapter dedicated to helping overweight teens make better choices to achieve a healthy weight. And, of course, I’ve included a chapter on eating disorders, which are far more likely to affect adolescents than adults. And for those kids who are into sports in a big way, I’ve included a chapter on sports nutrition. It provides information that will help your child get the fuel he or she needs for the sport of choice, be it basketball, hockey, track and field, swimming, tennis, or dance.Over 65 Recipes to Keep Busy Teens and Parents HealthyEvery recipe in this book comes from the Canadian Living Test Kitchen. That means they taste great, they’re easy to prepare, and of course, they’re good for you. Each recipe is accompanied by a nutrient analysis: a breakdown of its calories, fat, protein, fibre, and so on. You’ll find recipes for great-tasting breakfasts on the go, bagged lunches, quick dinners on the fly, and plenty of snacks. There’s no question that adopting a healthy lifestyle—even making small changes—can protect a teenager’s future health. But healthy eating and becoming physically active (and not smoking) also have immediate benefits for teenagers. A healthy diet and active lifestyle can help teenagers to:• Increase energy levels • Improve mental performance • Boost self-esteem • Cope with stress and anxiety • Prevent colds and flu • Speed recovery from injuries and illnessEating habits established during adolescence are often carried forward into adulthood. There’s no question that a teenager’s diet shapes his or her diet later in life. When it comes to getting teenagers, who are striving for independence, to eat healthfully, there’s only so much that parents can do. The more we badger our kids about the eating habits they’re not implementing, the more our kids will go the other way.Good nutrition is a shared responsibility between parent and child. As parents, we must try to understand our children’s food choices and show respect for their ability to make independent decisions. It’s critical that we educate our kids about healthy eating and exercise in a constructive manner. We must encourage and support healthy behaviours in our children by making healthy foods accessible at home and being good role models. Doing so will enable teenagers to make their own food choices with awareness and knowledge. As parents, that’s the best we can do for our children.I truly hope this book helps you and your family adopt and follow a healthy diet. Once you read it, I encourage you to pass this book along to your son or daughter.Leslie Beck, RD Toronto, 2005

I wanted this book to read with my son so he can understand and make better choices. However, this book refers to Canadian food recommendations, but facts are facts and did does have a lot of good info, especially of adults. But my 11 year its a little over his head to understand and relate too. For a parent this book is a great reference, just ignore the reference to Canada. But not in the content for a kid to understand.

My preteen is able to read it and enjoying the information.

I bought it for my aunt and she has been reading it and it's been helpful for helping her daughter with her eating issues.

FINAL DECISION: Quirky and sweet contemporary romantic comedy. I read this one on a whim and ended up loving the story between two opposites. It was cute and fun and just perfect for a couple hour's escape.THE STORY: Hazel Bradford is a lot to handle. Chaos follows her everywhere, she doesn't have a filter and she has a habit of doing or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. She met Josh Im in college when she vomited on him at a party. Ten years after college, the two meet again and Hazel is determined to be Josh's best friend. After a bad breakup, Hazel convinces Josh to agree to go on a blind date with Hazel. Well, they would each set the other up with someone and they would double date. The two have no interest in one another, but somehow their dates don't work out and the attraction between Hazel and Josh keeps growing.OPINION: Some books you just have to approach with an open mind and an open heart. Not that everyone would love this book if they did, but I know that I had to be open to this book to enjoy it.Hazel is a lot to take in. She is a whirlwind -- chaotic, intemperate, brash. But she also is completely open to loving other people. She cares deeply. The chaos and her inability to censor herself would be something that might annoy me greatly -- until I saw how caring she is. She wants to love so much that she opens herself up and is hurt again and again. And yet she keeps caring for others. And that is what makes her who she is.She is desperately aware that people are attracted to her, but that she becomes too much and people expect (or want) her eventually to tone down. But she doesn't. Although Hazel is confident in herself, she also doesn't believe that she has any chance with Josh. She dubbed him "Perfect" as in the model for the perfect guy. Her caring for him makes her want to be close to him, but because she doesn't believe he can be for her, she instead wants to be his best friend.Hazel and Josh begin a friendship that is funny and sweet at the same time. She brings color and imperfection into his life. Josh brings some order into Hazel's. Josh, however, is always completely accepting of Hazel. He may not understand how her mind works, but he doesn't criticize her or try to make her into someone else. Hazel is a force of nature and Josh is the calm in the storm. The two end up on a series of terrible dates (with other people) which end up being an odd courtship between them. I loved the humor and the pure acceptance between these two. This is the first Christina Lauren book I've actually read. I have a bunch on my TBR list and own a bunch, but I have always set those aside to read something else. Why did I decide on this one? Because the hero is Korean American. I thought the interracial romance was handled well.My only complaint about the story was the ending and the epilogue. I'm not a fan of leaving obvious story points unfinished and them coming back in the epilogue to give answers. I love epilogues, but personally prefer that the story be complete without it and then have the epilogue as a bonus. But that is a quibble with what was a wonderful, light and fun romance.WORTH MENTIONING: The story is told in alternating first person points of view.CONNECTED BOOKS: JOSH + HAZEL'S GUIDE TO NOT DATING is a standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to help prepare this review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.

Why do authors have to alienate people by getting political and pushing their views on readers? I used to read everything these 2 write but the politics is ruining it for me. I read to escape not to get authors views pushed in my face. If you just need an escape walk away because you sure know how they believe and it's in your face. The end really capped it off but innuendos throughout were there too.

“I’ve never really had a love that could consume me. I want to know that kind of fire.”—Let me tell you a little something.... JOSH AND HAZEL’S GUIDE TO NOT DATING is required reading in 2018. It is, in my humble opinion, the best Christina Lauren contemporary romance to date. I haven’t felt pure joy while reading in a long time and Hazel Bradford and Josh Im brought it to me. With countless laugh out loud moments, this book was so much more than I could have hoped for and I’m thankful I read it. I’m thankful that Hazel didn’t need to conform to become dateable. I’m thankful that Josh Im is basically perfect and in love with all of her quirks. Im thankful I took a break from the ARC cave and read this book.

Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren was everything this romance reader needed (and was desperate for) in a book. There are so MANY things I loved about the story and about the characters. It has become apparent to me that I tend to love quirky and special female characters. Hazel was amazing! She was funny and very unique, a breath of fresh air. In a genre where there are so many other romance novels, she excelled, that's for sure. What's the novel about? Our heroine Hazel Camille Bradford lacks a filter and she behaves in a different way than your usual heroine. She says things without thinking first. She rambles when she should remain quiet. She puts herself in embarrassing situations but the difference is that she knows she is like this and she accepts herself this way. She doesn't want to settle for a man who doesn't like her for herself. In a way, she reminded me of Bridget Jones."The world seems full of men who are initially infatuated by our eccentricities, but who ultimately expect them to be temporary. "Hazel met Josh when they were in college and the first time she met him she made quite an impression after vomiting all over his shoes. Over the years in college, she created a reputation for being quite crazy and she knows some men are uncomfortable with her personality thinking she's too much to handle. In college, Hazel had a crush on Josh. After all, he's "the blueprint for Perfect", but she knew a relationship with him was impossible.Josh was the quiet one. A good guy whom a decade later is currently dating a girl who's living in California. The long distance relationship is hard on him. He then bumps into Hazel who wants to turn him into her best friend. In a turn of events, Hazel is best friends with his sister Emily without realizing it but now that Josh is back in her life, she wants him as her best friend. Hazel thinks Josh will never want to be more than friends with her because he knows how she is, a tornado or more like a hurricane. In her mind, if you can date them then you can make them your best friend. As friends, Hazel and Josh decide to go on double dates after Josh discovers his girlfriend is being unfaithful to him. Of course, the double dates go horribly wrong but it also makes Hazel and Josh realize that there are other feelings in play. Discovering those feelings are what makes this book so humorous and sexy.I love this novel. It was deliciously funny, witty and one of a kind! Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating has become my favorite book by this duo.“I know I’m like Pig-Pen in Charlie Brown, and I have chaos around me, but it’s like he doesn’t even care. He doesn’t need me to change or pretend to be someone else. He’s my person. He’s my best friend.”Cliffhanger: No5/5 Fangs
