I enjoyed this novel thoroughly. The characters are intense and the plot unravels and twists and you are trapped in the lives of the young people involved, and their parents and extended families. The Irish community were the history takes place is also well described and places and characters unfold in all their dramas and interactions with each other. The magic elements and the beliefs of the Irish culture appear in the shape of ghosts present in the minds of susceptible young people trapped in problems too complex for them to resolve.

I absolutely loved this book! It sucked me in immediately and I sat for 2 hours before I had to put it down! I couldn't wait to get back to it and was able to read it on a plane ride. The plane was landing and I wanted to keep flying to finish it! The character development is very detailed and I have clear picture of each person and a vested interest in what happens to each of them. The story took a twist and ended in a way I wasn't expecting but tied together brilliantly! If you like mysteries, get this book! You will love it! Bravo to L. M. Brown!

Gritty story taking place in 80s Ireland. Beautiful portrait of the friendship that develops between the 2 young protagonists who are dealing with tragedy in their lives and the solace they provide to each other.

The story starts out a little slow, but once the reader gets into it, you have the understanding that it needed to flow that way. The reader needs to connect with the characters, and see where it leads especially after a pivotal moment of tragedy and despair. It's one of those stories you don't want to put down, as you follow the journey of the characters, especially Andre. I’ve read a number of Brown’s short stories, and am always intrigued by her characters—she shows us just a little less than we think we need to know, and so much of the fun is watching her characters unravel, solidify, and transcend. Her debut book is no different. Andre, a young boy caught in a terrifying circumstance, has to figure out his way forward, and does so alongside Erin, an unexpected helpmate. Surrounded by adults with their own stories to tell, Andre and Erin fumble toward some truth, and emerge anew, for better or worse. Characters aside, Brown’s prose is pointed, yet allows itself to indulge in the rich surroundings of the greater Dublin community, and I particularly enjoyed the sort of sustained anticipation achieved in the book’s 154 pages, making it a very satisfying read.

I ordered this book from the seller BestStore4Books because it is the textbook that is being used with my graduate level quantum mechanics course next semester (Spring 2018), so I have not looked much at the material yet. I will update the review after next semester to discuss more about the material then, but for now I just wanted to comment on my initial perception of the quality of the international edition of the book. First off, I recommend international editions in general. They are far cheaper and the quality is typically enough to last at least one semester of traveling in your backpack and much longer after that sitting on your bookshelves. Also, for a back-up, you can almost always find a PDF through Google (this textbook, as other reviews have mentioned, actually has a free PDF made available by the publishers) and if you want to add extra protection to soft covers, you can cover them in clear contact paper which gives a similar protection as the clear covers added to soft covers in most libraries. Last semester (Fall 2017), I used international editions of the books Mathematical Methods for Physicists by Arfken, et al (published by Academic Press) and Classical Mechanics by Goldstein, et al (published by Pearson). In comparision, my first impression of this quantum mechanics book is that it seems slightly lower quality than those two international editions. The main areas where it seems to be lacking is that the cover seems slighly flimsier and the binding seems slightly weaker. However, I still think it will last the semester of traveling back and forth in my backpack. Also, oddly enough, from looking at the sides of the book the pages seem to be slightly different colors, unlike the other two international editions. (I have attached pictures for reference - the first is this quantum mechanics book, the second is the Arfken book, and the last is the Goldstein book.) Overall, though, I think there will not be much difference in use between this textbook and the other international editions, but my initial impression was that it is more cheaply made than the other two international editions. However, I would still recommend it since it is over $100 cheaper than the American edition. I will update this review after more use to comment on how well it actually stands up and also add information on the quality of the content later.

Any student of QM would do well to read Schiff's book, third edition, His explanations are relatively brief, but profound and to the point. He shows a deep understanding of his subject.

One very very thick book!Merzbacher's Quantum Mechanics is not the most popular graduate text for QM; however, it is one of the options that some professors will choose.This text tries to be a very thorough study of quantum mechanics, but at times it is definitely very difficult to follow. Let's say we're looking to study topic A, and you turn to the index to look for it. You'll most likely find it in several different chapters, linked to different topics.The book also doesn't give enough information for you to solve the problems inside, maybe this is just because I am just not bright enough though...Nonetheless, it would be worthwhile to buy this book if you're taking a class that requests it. It's very difficult to navigate the book in an electronic form.Happy shopping! :>

This book is truly amazing! I even bought a second copy for my Priest who was very familiar with Dr. Pitre's book, "Jewish roots of the Bible". At first I was a little intimidated until I saw Dr. Brant Pitre on a Catholic Productions Podcast. Going through the different elements of the book helped me to understand how it integrates the historical, theological and spiritual with faith, reason, Scripture and the tradition of the Catholic Church. It not only examines the literature from a historical and cultural perspective but also interprets it theologically, drawing on the New Testament and faith of the Catholic Church. The book also includes a section on the current Lectionary used at Mass for each chapter as well as extensive bibliographies, maps, illustrations, and charts.I love that this book is not only for Priests, seminarians, scholars, theologians, and catechists, it is also for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Bible.

This is probably one of the best, fairest treatments in an intro to the OT I have ever read. The authors address prevailing thinking by scholars and evaluate them to come to conclusions. They reveal blindspots of scholars and provide alternative views of the issue most other scholars don't bother with. This gives the reader an honest assessment of the book or issue so the reader can make more educated decisions on what he or she believes about these issues. They also give relevant historical, liturgical and theological insights into the issues including philological information. I love this introduction.

I have been for years looking for Catholic materials on Old Testament, something that is accessible to serious readers but not so academic beyond strength to persevere (and I work in a Catholic bookstore). I'd like to thank Dr. John Bergsma and Dr. Brant Pitre for the efforts they put into these. I bought the kindle version, read barely to 10% but because I have been looking for commentaries on OT for so long, and read a lot of N. T. Wright (because his accessible writing style and good content), I know I found what I've been looking for for sooo long. I don't need to play scrabble anymore to entertainment my mind :). Why do I write so long? Others say "Superb!". That would have been enough. Whatever :+D

A superb reference book that satisfies both the spiritual and intellectual needs of the believer. Prior to this book my only comprehensive Old Testament reference book was "Reading the Old testament An Introduction by Lawrence Boadt 2nd Edition". Although good in background information and in-depth analysis of the books of the old testament, Boadt book has one major flaw. It denies the occurrence of supernatural events in history. The most that can happen are providential natural events where some people see the hand of God. This book have all the positive of Boadt book plus does not deny that God can manifest His providence in history by means of supernatural events. I look forward for a second book dealing with the New Testament.

I have been thoroughly enjoying this book. I teach Old Testament at a Catholic school and this book has been a tremendous asset to my classroom lesson planning. Be warned however, it is designed as a Masters Degree level college textbook. Your average Catholic should be able to follow along and get something out of it, but it is not an apologetics book, nor is it set up in the fun, humorous, easy to read format like Dr. Bergsma's other books. A wonderful addition to my classroom!

A fantastic publication!---Just bought this great book overviewing the OT. It was a long time coming but well worth the wait. As a lector in my parish church it will provide an extra level of detail, background and richness for facts and commentary. Thinking about giving a copy to my parish pastor and assoc. pastor as well as our two deacons. Will make a great Christmas gift. Very happy I purchased this treasurable book. BTW, does anyone know when the authors will be releasing their upcoming overview book on the "New Testament?" Hopefully it won't take too long. I'm sure it will also be a knockout just like this one!

I had pre-ordered this book about a year and a half ago. It took a long time but the wait was worth it! Excellent scholarly commentary for all books of the Old Testament. Highly recommend!!!

I was hoping this would be appropriate for my primary students but I was taken back by some unexpected references to beer and sex. I guess more for middle/high school?

I love the book. It helping me learn Spanish as a second language. There is no dislike. It's helping me expand my language.

I love this little book of Spanish and English poems that so well captures the experience of growing up bilingual and / or as an immigrant in the United States. Although that is not my personal experience, I have been an ESL teacher for 25 years, and Spanish is my second language. I have watched many students from a wide variety of first languages and cultures go through experiences similar to those expressed in the poetry. I think this inexpensive book is a great addition to the study of poetry in ESL, bilingual, or literature classes, and can inspire bilingual / bicultural students to express their own feelings and experiences in poetry.

I teach Latino students working on both English and Spanish. This is a wonderful book to use in class. The poems are beautiful and I'm going to be able to do a lot of activities with them.

I teach high school Oral Interpretation (mostly poetry) for ESL students... these are great because of the dual language text and relevant themes. Screen through for sexual and/or adult themes if you're sharing with a young audience. Otherwise, enjoy!! Beautiful poetry... well-rounded collection.

How can such a place be a single nation? In fact, in recent years, that territory has consisted of three countries: India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. But historically it was, in the view of historians and geographers, just one country. That’s India.2,500 years of Indian historyIn his engrossing new book, Incarnations: India in Fifty Lives, the eminent Indian historian Sunil Khilnani sets out to paint an impressionistic history of that endlessly complex country. The 50 lives he sketches in a series of brief essays span the full 2,500 years of the subcontinent’s discoverable history. Khilnani’s subjects include poets, religious leaders, emperors, artists, actors, film directors, social activists, political leaders, industrialists, and more. The effect is dizzying. In his attempt to convey a sense of India as a whole, he highlights instead the many, many small parts that make the country appear implausible. In the subcontinent, the whole is not greater than the parts.Without question, India has produced a great many gifted and influential individuals. From the Buddha and the Emperor Ashoka to Mohandas Gandhi, India has made its presence known to the world. These three towering figures are all included in Incarnations. Most of the rest are unfamiliar to most Western audiences. Even having spent time in India and read some of its history, I recognized no more than a handful of the 47 others portrayed in the book.Unsparing portraits of India’s greatsKhilnani’s selection of subjects is unorthodox. For example, the country’s founding Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, is missing. Many of the others portrayed in the book are unlikely to figure in anyone else’s list of India’s greatest individuals. “If you don’t yet know the arresting stories [told here],” he writes, that is perhaps not accidental.” Instead of Nehru and other latter-day personalities whom others might include, he sketches the lives of such individuals as “Malik Ambar, a gifted seventeenth-century Abyssinian slave turned Deccan warrior king” and “Chidambaram Pillai, a dogged Tamil nationalist who took on the steamship might of the British Empire.” It’s unlikely that even a well-educated Indian in any field but history would recognize either of these names.Incarnations is no celebration of India’s greatness. Khilnani’s portrayal of his subjects is often merciless. Virtually every one of the essays in the book shows their dark side. Mohandas Gandhi, for instance, is portrayed in a particularly unflattering light. But so are most of the other people included in the book. Don’t read Incarnations expecting white-washed Indian history.Diversity squaredThe United States today pictures itself as ethnically diverse. The Census Bureau reports that more than 350 languages are spoken in American homes. But only a relative handful communicate exclusively in any language but English or Spanish. America’s diversity pales beside that of India. There, 29 languages are each spoken by at least one million people. The top 10 are spoken by at least 33 million. Indians who can carry on conversations in five or six languages may still be unable to communicate with a majority of their countrymen. In religion, too, the two countries contrast sharply. In the US today, two major variants of Christianity encompass most of the population. India is “the only place on earth where each of the world’s four great religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam) has at different times ruled large areas.” Even today, all four claim large numbers of faithful in India.Sunil Khilnani’s Incarnations will help you gain a sense of the depth of Indian history and the breadth of its differences. I was interested in reading a good history of India, and was recommended this book by a friend. I really enjoyed it and found it a good way to get a broad view of India as told through the lives of 50 people throughout Indian history. Each story was an easy read and moved fast, and it was a good way to cover a lot of interesting ground in an easy to read way.

A very readable and informative book by the world's greatest classicist about the cradle of Western Civilization the Parthenon. I have been to the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum and have viewed the Elgin marbles many times at the British Museum and can testify that Professor Beard hits the mark on each of these places. She even solved a mystery for me about an orange color on some of the marbles that I thought was a problem caused by my camera. The color really exists on some of the pieces and she explains what it is. I read this book in the depths of winter and I yearn for my return to the Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum this spring with a now enlightened eye for detail.

There is an old saying that one kills the thing one loves. Given the treatment meted out to some of the world's treasures, this certainly must have a grain of truth. Of course it is rare for humanity to recognize a world treasure during it's initial creation. The Mona Lisa was not the painting that it is now until the 19th century. This book on the Parthenon proves just how hard it is to win the acclaim of the world and just how many times we came close to losing it.Probably no monument has had a harder time of it than the Parthenon. It has since 5th century BC been burnt, sacked, looted, converted to a Christian Church, defaced (by Christians), turned into a mosque, defaced (by Moslems), additions added and then removed, in 1687 blown up by the Venetians. The unkindest cut of all was when Lord Elgin gathered up the 5th century sculptures and carvings and shipped them off to London where they eventually found a home at the British Museum. It is all a fascinating, if sad story of the iconic monument to the glorious 5th century of Athenian history.Mary Beard the historian of the classical age has provided and excellent synopsis of the past 2,500 years of this building's history and provides context to many of the developments which shaped its past and present. The section discussing the differences between the Athenian version of democracy (probably about 3% participating on a regular basis, much like in the early days of the US republic) and just how fleeting this concept was even as a thing exercised by elites and for elites. This is a well done addition to the "wonders of the world" series.

This is an exhaustive, fabulous treatise on one of the most venerable monuments to classical history the world has ever known. Beard takes us through the entire history of the Parthenon. She details for us its probable early use as a temple to Athena (as well as some other theories) as well as its less known utility as a Christian church and Mosque in later ages.Along the way, Beard offers us statements concerning the Parthenon from various historical and modern personages. What is less known is that 300 people perished when the Parthenon exploded. That's an unfortunate detail that is many times overlooked in history classes. As usual, Beard does an excellent job of giving the whole story of what took place.If you possess an interest in the Parthenon and / or ancient Greece in general, this book is a can't miss. For anyone who wishes to tour Greece (or the British museum in London), this book is highly recommended as well. Even if you only have a passing interest in history per-se, this book will give you an avenue to enjoy the Parthenon & all of its frieze and sculptoral splendor.

Like her earlier book, The Colosseum, this book by Mary Beard provides a good summary of the history and significance of a great old building. Also, like that book it suffers from the lack of color illustrations, but in this case the black and white illustrations are mostly of much better quality. The Parthenon has a quite fascinating and rich history: a thousand years as a pagan temple, another thousand years as a Christian church, and almost four hundred years as an Islamic mosque. It suffered both depredations and preservation under the ownership of Christians and Muslims. Like many ancient buildings, its survival to this day probably is due to its conversion to church and then mosque. Otherwise, almost certainly its valuable carvings and stonework would have been carted off wholesale long before it would have had a chance to be appreciated as an architectural treasure. Of course, much of the sculpture was carted off by various collectors, most notably the notorious Lord Elgin. But at least these “Elgin Marbles” ended up in a safe place, the British Museum, where they are well cared for and accessible to the public. But the Greeks want them back! And the Greeks have an even better place, the new Acropolis Museum, to show the world these ancient works of art. Mary Beard covers the controversy over ownership of the Parthenon sculptures in Chapter Six of this book. Although she’s a Brit, she tries to take a neutral stance in this political and cultural brawl, but I sense that she favors keeping them where they are.

Thoughtful, literate, witty: excellent overview of the building both in antiquity and thereafter, right up to the present. Recommended.

We always buy everything Dr Beard writes. She is level-headed, thorough and a delight to read.
