My summer discussion group for brainiac coaches is just finishing this book. On the whole, we liked it although we liked some chapters better than others. We did not come across that much new information in chapter 1 (Value), but found chapters 2 (Target), 3 (Develop), and 4 (Extend) to be better. Chapter 5 (Relate) is disturbing because it contains so many errors, that I wonder what is true in this chapter. For instance, the skateboarder problem on page 149 does not make sense. What skateboarded travels at 6.5 miles per second? At that speed, the boarder might be in the next state at the end of her run. Elsewhere Boser wondered what if Romeo and Juliet were married? Well, they were married before they died. The Venn diagram does not illustrate his point. Quiz #21 is poorly worded, so the answer given in the back of the book does not make sense. This chapter needed a good editor/fact checker. Chapter 6 (Rethink) and the Epilogue are good endings to the book. This book will be useful to teachers and coaches if they read it skeptically. Please, Ulrich Boser and Rodale Press, replace the first edition with a better written and edited version soon.

Let me say up-front I enjoyed the book and I learned a lot.However, the number of errors and low quality of writing in the book undercuts its message. Besides the errors mentioned by Mary Beth Averill in her review, there are statements like: "There’s a natural inclination to solve this problem—½ × ¼—by simply multiplying the denominators (that’s incorrect)." Um, no, that's correct; where did you go to middle school? Errors like this make me seriously question whether the author could adequately evaluate the statistics of the sources he cited to back up his statements.The writing is uneven and sometimes rambling, as you can see if you try to highlight the key points made in each chapter. With a good writer, key points are made in a single statement. This author can take a paragraph or two to make his point, which would be fine if this was a podcast, but I hold books to a higher standard.Finally, the "pop quizzes" are a good idea but devolve into questions like:What is retrieval practice?A.A game for dogs.B.A type of self-quizzing.C.A new exam format.D.A better way to play tennis.Which you can answer without even reading the book.My advice is to wait for the second edition, if there ever is one.

While I have heard some of the information before in different places this book puts together a solid framework to help reframe how should approach learning. The first step is to put aside what the habits you have learned going through K-12 education as they tend to focus more on rote learning which is not a long term benefit. Instead you should look to interact and engage with what you are learning. This is something the book drives home well.

For any teacher that questions why one lesson results in successful learning while another does not, this book can provide some answers and even a toolkit to teach better. "Learn Better" by Ulrich Boser is an interesting and entertaining review of the latest findings from the science of learning. While the book is written for a diverse audience including adult learners, educators and policy makers, as a teacher I found it provided a useful framework for evaluating and critiquing my own classroom practice. Boser organizes the book into chapters that define and illustrate each of six steps in mastering a body of knowledge that include the following: value, target, develop, extend, relate, and rethink. As I write a lesson plan, or revise an existing plan, these steps provide a kind of checklist to assess the components of the lesson or even a set of lessons in a curriculum unit. For example, I might ask myself where in the lesson is the “value” piece? We find out in "Learn Better" that value means that my students need to see the knowledge they are building for themselves as valuable. In a project-based biology curriculum this might be an early lesson where students identify a certain type of knowledge that is required to solve a real life problem such how to create a sustainable school lunch. Students might need to learn about nutrients or calories and that motivates additional lessons. Boser writes with humor and clarity as he fleshes out the importance of each step and documents the significant research studies that justify the inclusion of the step in the framework. Just as translation medicine strives to take basic biomedical research results and make products and methods useful in the clinic, in "Learn Better" Boser translates the jargon and statistical probabilities of learning science into useable tools for any learner including a classroom teacher.

First rate!! It will literally expand your brain, this writing. Who knew a book could be written about learning and how human beings best do it. Not only is this text uniquely informative, but I learned some things that are broadly applicable in amazing ways. Definitely a keeper!

I generally LOVE lonely planet books, and buy one for every trip I take. Especially for international trips. Unfortunately, this one was not as helpful as others. Some of the recommendations were not accurate or valid. And several of the phone numbers had been disconnected. Still, the maps are correct and helpful, especially in the cities.

Very useful and necessary information. I recomend it if you are traveling to the north. I recommend it if you are traveling north.Please note that it is a guide only, as a base for your trip, but it is always best to know the local people and let them lead the way.

Very detailed, accurate, recent info. Incredible value for money. A must have for Mozambique travellers.

i'm afraid i have to pan this guide. i am here in mozambique and was also here a couple of years ago for 6 weeks. this guide looks like a rush job. there is not a whole lot of info beyond the bare minimum. the author doesn't seem to have spent very much time here. i was looking at someone's bradt guide last week and the difference is amazing. the bradt is twice as big for starters, and the author clearly has spent a lot of time here and knows the country. the maps in the bradt are also better. each entry about a hotel or restaurant has the map coordinates and you can go directly to the map to see where things are. the maps of maputo are generally much better.both guides are pretty much completely absent of information about mozambiquan music, which is an appalling oversite!and another complaint. i decided to download the digital edition and discovered that, contrary to what the web site says, it isn't complete. there is no index and the notes about the author are absent.anyhow, not recommended.

Mozambique has only recently re-opened to tourism, after years of war and bloodshed. Fortunately the hard times are now over, and the country is once again a thriving, wonderful African nation. I loved it all - the people, the food, the music... With this Lonely Planet guide, I was really able to get the most out of my stay. It contains plenty of advice on visiting places, hotels, restaurants, etc. And also great advice on how to save money - indeed, Mozambique can be very expensive ! A country and a book I won't forget.

Excelent travel guide

Lonely Planet books are always interesting to browse through. Most of the time they do stick to giving you the facts about a country and I do appreciate it. However, Lonely Planet's editors often like to mix their left wing politics with travel. The result are sections like "Responsible Tourism" that at best are paternalistic to the reader and at worst wrong. In this section it is suggested that the tourist seek out "locally run and owned" establishments and patronize them instead of foreign owned businesses. First of all if you can tell a foreign owned from a local owned perhaps it's because the standards are different. Secondly, why would you choose a lessor value (weighing in price and quality of the product together) when picking a hotel for instance? Where you stay is part of the experience and it may not be worth residing in some dank crummy hotel for the sake of patronizing a local business. The reason why countries like Mozambique never worked out economically in the past (and now are trying to change) is because their leaders applied the same kind of dim ignorant thinking displayed by Lonely Planet writers.I have traveled to many People's Republics and the idea of a business supplying a valued product to a customer was often lacking. Businesses were simply suppose to provide jobs and no attention to efficiency or quality was made. This is exactly why these economies floundered in the past; they could not make things to market standards, their use of material resources and labor was so poor that they could only pay workers a pittance and could only pawn off their wares to captive populations. A successful economy has businesses that typically concentrate on providing value to the customer first - that is you the traveler. By doing so a business will insure that it employs local people and contributes to the local economy. Demanding that local enterprises match the value of foreign firms will help the country. Local entrepreneurs and workers will adopt the right business standards and work ethics to economically succeed.

I read a lot of books. A lot of sci-fi and fantasy--I'm a big fan of Lovecraft, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Dunsany--you get the idea. This series is poignant and glorious. A playfully written, deeply serious and even philosophical space opera. You are offered a world which can reasonably be derived from our own both politically and technologically. The protagonists are painfully and amusingly human, neither too heroic, nor unrealistically flawed, but honorable in a refreshing way (especially when much fiction today seeks to make us love despicable protagonists). They're characters who are impossible not to grow attached to.The plot is well paced, keeping momentum throughout. The prose is engaging, written with a touch of modern slang that is pleasant and an enjoyable creole original to the series (so cool!).So what I'm saying is, the tech is really cool, the characters are irresistible and you will probably end up reading this into the wee hours of the morning with your family checking on you concernedly to make sure you remember to eat. Enjoy.

This is an excellent series. I've heard it compared to Star Wars meets game of thrones. Not only is the society, the politics, the history, and the characters well-developed, but physics as we know it still applies. There is no zipping around the galaxy at multiples of the speed of light. Gravity and weightlessness are still problems. Speeding up and slowing down is a problem. And the hard vacuum of space is no joke. Good characters. A lot of tension, and a lot of surprises. I read the first three books quickly I'm halfway through volume 4 of six

I loved this series...Well written and suspenseful. I watched the SYFY series first and that inspired me to read the books. Most often I enjoy the books over the movie/series versions of the story. This was no exception. I was fully engaged from almost the first page and could not put it down. I binge read this and was looking for more when I finished. Good thing there were two more books in the series to follow...Who needs sleep...

I read the first three books in about 10 days. I then found the next three locally and read them just as quickly. So the books are certainly page turners for me. This is not great literature but is the best science fiction I have read in the past 20 years. The authors' say it is not hard science fiction but the physics are conceivable. There are gate ways to other solar systems but the gates were created by an ancient extinct civilization.

Fantastic Sci-Fi. I was attracted to the books by the SyFy TV series. The books do far better with character development but viewing season one of he TV series gave me some faces to put to the characters I was reading about. Spoiler alert: Season 1 draws from Books 1 and 2 whereas some details from Book 1 are not found until later in Season 2 of the series. Nevertheless, you will come to love and admire the crew of the Rocinante. I also appreciated that the authors did not forget Newton's Laws of Motion. Excessive acceleration and deceleration can kill! Forget "going to warp factor nine" while no one on the bridge or engineering sways an inch. This is a realistic account of how the future and our first encounters with "alien life" might be.

The underlying plot is not exotic, but has surprising twists. The character and story development, on the other hand, is excellent. I read the first couple if chapters somewhere on line, and was hooked. Just finished the third novel and am now looking forward to beginning the next four.Because of the first book I went back to stream the SciFy channel series. I had originally watched a couple of episodes and lost interest. Now that I understand what is going on I find the series equally engrossing. The series is the opposite of the novels - the same story line developed over dozens of chapters and thousands of words in the novels is presented with very few words and little explanation.Both the novel and TV series are highly recommended. I was a juvenile fan of Heinlein, and believe this work to be equal to his best.

Probably the best space opera that exists right now. If you like sci fi you owe it to yourself to try leviathan wakes.

Watched Expanse on SciFi(who I think will be as sorry as those who originally canned Star Trek way back when) so of course the books are different..I do prefer Amos like Mr Chatham and read him like TV Amos. I read a lot and go through books super fast and I was having a drought so this is great to have these to read. The series on TV just got better with time so I am looking forward to this time having read the books then seeing season 4. I did think the books helped me understand more and fill in some gaps. You just done't have the time or money on a TV series to get it all in.

This is a splendid book that serves two main purposes. First, it has an excellent catalogue of some of the most fascinating books in literature and gives a clear synopsis of each book in just sufficient detail so as to enable the browser to decide whether to read the book itself or just enjoy the review. Secondly, it provides an advance critical review of each book so that a serious student will find some useful points in many if not all the reviews. For example, on 'Robinson Crusoe', there is a side by side comparison of key points of reference with a similar novel, 'Gulliver's Travels'. The comment is made in 'RC' that it 'Makes use of an autobiographical voice to endorse the text as a true narrative' whereas 'GT' is described as 'an autobiographical voice to parody claims of truth in contemporary fiction'. It is no wonder then, that 'RC' becomes 'King and Lord of his isle' and Gulliver becomes 'a prisoner on the island of Lilliput.Each review has a photograph and biopic of the author, and a couple of quotations from the book. From 'War and Peace' we have: 'There's nothing stronger than those two old soldiers - Time and Patience'. Each book is given its context in time, for example, Kafka's 1915 'Metamorphosis' is set in the context of existentialism, and is described as preceded by Dostoevsky's 'The Brothers Karamazov', and Nietzsche's 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra', and followed by Jean-Paul Sartre's 'Nausea', and Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot'.The reviews are divided into sections like 'Heroes and Legends', and 'Romanticism and the Rise of the Novel'. After each section is a list of further readings, the books listed are fine references. Under 'Contemporary Literature' the recommended further reading list includes books like 'Life of Pi', 'Emperor of Maladies', 'Infinite Jest', and 'The New York Trilogy'.This is a book that will occupy many hours and the reader is likely to refer to it again and again.

Or perhaps an entire semester worth of literature classes…Acknowledging that storytelling is as old as humanity itself, The Literature Book takes on the daunting challenge of giving readers a historical and functional overview of literary works and their progression through the ages. The book starts with 4,600-year-old Sumerian texts and carries all the way up to select contemporary works as recent as 2013—encompassing novels, plays, and poetry. Its presentation style is sometimes dry, but orderly in format and highly informative.--------What I Liked:There was a solid effort made to present a diverse array of works outside of the classical European variety—inclusive of cultural sub-genres such as Sanskrit Epics, Imperial Chinese Poetry, Early Arabic Lit, Slave Narratives, Inianismo, Baihua Lit, The Harlem Renaissance, The Latin American Boom, Caribbean, and Indian English.Personal Note: Page 93 conveyed an excellent, concise explanation of early Japanese theater forms. This reader didn't previously grasp the difference between Kabuki(theatrical song/dance/mime) and Bunraku(musical puppet theater) until it was so clearly laid out in this book.The Literature Book claims it “cuts through the literary jargon” and is “packed with witty illustrations.” I don’t know about cutting through, but it does explain literary terms with textbook thoroughness. And although there is certainly an abundance of illustrations to break up the sometimes dense visual field, I wouldn’t personally refer to said imagery as “witty.” The diagrams, visual-aid images, excised quotes, and timelines are simplistic—mono and duo-chromatic. Effectively breaking up dense swaths of text and enhancing to the overall comprehension potential without becoming a distraction. Full-color pictures and artwork appear more sporadically and offer a stronger sense of place and/or ambiance to the subjects they pertain to.What Didn’t Work For Me:Chosen works may receive only a sentence of passing mention, or as much as 6 analytical pages (i.e. Moby-Dick). The authors receive anything from cursory reference, to a mini-bio, to a full biography including a picture. How it was decided which authors, genres, and works were worthy of how much recognition remains a point of confusion for this reader. Sci-fi and Fantasy seemed to receive disproportionately minimal attention, and the Romance genre—along with its representative authors—received no address at all.Unfortunately, a number of prolific and influential authors were all but passed over. I was personally disappointed the book didn't offer a bio for either C.S. Lewis or J.R.R. Tolkien. Their works seemed mentioned only in passing when the fantasy genre is touched on. Lewis is only referred to once very briefly, and there's no allusion to his sci-fi works at all. Jules Verne receives the most mention of any sci-fi author (page 184), but no bio. And H.G. Wells is allotted only a single sentence—though he could arguably be considered one of the pioneering fathers of science fiction.Conversely, TWO of the three Bronte sisters (Emily and Charlotte) have full bios with pictures included, though Emily wrote just one novel. That’s not to say I don’t approve of their inclusion and highlighted significance—only to point out the disparity in emphasis.-----While I wouldn’t call this book an exhaustive authority, it certainly has the potential to be a valuable and semi-encyclopedic tool in the pursuit of a more advanced literary education. Studious readers are likely to come away with both factual knowledge, as well as a fresh list of works they may be interested in experiencing at length.College-bound Young Adults perusing a major in literature might consider this book a preparatory framework for their degree, and perhaps a leg-up on their future.

DK books are frustrating because they are so uniformly good--makes me want to toss earlier surveys that I have bought. This one is no exception. Wonderful, well organized summaries that give a grand view of literature, especially Western. So good, I may never get to so many of the primary sources--but for an overview of what is and what makes great literature, could not be better.

I found many passages revealing and learned from them. I found many passages dry and it was a grind to get through. I believe that my experiences will be similar in this to yours but with the passages differing. I did enjoy the book despite the grind. Literature is a difficult subject for me to enjoy unless I am passionate about the subject material. While most novels have great ideas those ideas are put into an author’s mental machine and when done in an academic way produce uniformity and structure. While this may be a good thing in architecture, I prefer the more aesthetic novel to literature where ideas are brought to the forefront but also done in a beautiful way. This isn’t to say that there aren’t literary novels that fall under this example; it is simply too few of them do. Literature for the academic may be found intriguing, but, to the general public it will be lost on them; mostly because they read literally. I am sure there is humor in that last note. Anyways great educational source. Do read.

Love this series of books. I simply don't have time to read in depth books on all the topics that I am interested in. These books are a short cut but in my opinion very well researched and assembled.

This wonderful overview will leave you ready to dip into any of the periods or genres of literature that it covers. Which must be most of them. You may wish for longer samples of the featured works, so as to get a better feeling for them. I suppose this would make this work monstrously long, not to mention possible copyright problems. All in all, very satisfying.

This review is of the Kindle version. I use the Kindle app on my iPad which gives me access to a much larger corpus of digital books than that offered by Apple. I got this book because I'm using the google Dead Sea Scrolls program to work out my own translations and I wanted a good English translation to reference. I'm very pleased with this edition. The translations flow nicely, and they are academically trustworthy. The book begins with a helpful introduction of various aspects of the history, compilation, and meaning of the DSS. The translations themselves follow the actual scrolls and are numbered according to the column and the line on the scrolls. This digital version is a valuable resource, and I'm quite happy with it. It's worth your money and your time.

Never realized "the Qumran" was recovered so incompletely! Author did a great job of filling in some of the blanks! Thanx!

These comprehensive translations are of the non-Biblical texts found from the caves at Qumran, and are useful for anyone interested primarily in the *content* of the scrolls. The hebrew texts are not given in this work (those interested in such should search under title = "Dead Sea Scrolls Study Edition", published both by Brill/Eerdmans), and the Biblical texts are not given (bibliographies are given for these texts-- most often the Oxford series *Discoveries in the Judaean Desert* is the primary source for Biblical texts).Serious students of Qumran literature will need more than this work, of course, given that some of the renderings given in the book are disputed (debate over the particulars of any given text can be consulted in academic journals and monographs). The book is a solid compilation of translations of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

If you want to know the story and the data in the Dead Sea Scrolls this is the book for you. It is not exhaustive since some of the fragments of the scrolls are not even complete words. Yet it does cover the biblical references in the scrolls.

Very difficult to read in terms of time consuming, but extremely interesting for what we have known about Judaism and Christianity. I learn a ot.

Not knowing how to read ancient Hebrew or Aramaic, I’m left to rely on someone else’s interpretation of the Dead Sea Scrolls in English. Like I do with the Bible, I have discovered I can expand my understanding by comparing translations.When I decided to read the Dead Sea Scrolls, there were three main translations that competed for my attention:The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated, Second Edition, by Florentino Garcia MartinezDead Sea Scrolls, A New Translation, by Michael Wise, Martin Abegg Jr., & Edward CookThe Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English by Geza VermesNot knowing anything about the Dead Sea Scrolls and basing my decision off reviews and the description of the book, I purchased Dead Sea Scrolls, A New Translation, by Michael Wise, Martin Abegg Jr., & Edward Cook (hereafter abbreviated as DSSNT). Later, in order to compare translations, I added to my library The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated, Second Edition, by Florentino Garcia Martinez (hereafter abbreviated as TDSST).The fragmentary nature of the scrolls makes it an arduous task to read through any translation of these scrolls. One must be rather serious and committed in order to find the nuggets of wisdom to be found there.Without some form of bearing on the landscape and background of the different scrolls I would have been somewhat lost without the commentary provided in the Dead Sea Scrolls, A New Translation (DSSNT) by Wise, Abegg and Cook. Unless you are familiar with some of this background information you would almost need a companion text like James VanderKam's The Dead Sea Scrolls Today, to fully appreciate The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated (TDSST) by Martinez, where he presents the full translation without commentary on the individual manuscripts.When I began to try to compare the two translations (DSSNT and TDSST) I quickly discovered how challenging it was to find a given manuscript in the other translation. Between the two, the manuscripts of the scrolls are organized in completely different ways. The Index of Manuscripts in the Epilogue of DSSNT became an invaluable resource. Unfortunately, TDSST did not have something similar for when I want to find a given manuscript in that translation. For this reason I spent several weeks composing an index of my own to help me navigate between them, which I published online as Dead Sea Scroll Index, Comparison of English Translations.Having solved the problem of being able to find the manuscripts between the two translations, I could now more easily compare them, which has given me a richer experience in understanding the beauty of these wonderful ancient scrolls from Qumran.I give here only a few examples:---------------------------------1QH Col 18:33-34DSSNT p. 106“My heart behaves as if mad in anguish and my loins tremble. Not only do they provide insightful commentary to help you navigate the landscape of the scrolls and great resources in their Epilogue, their translation seemed to capture what felt to me like a better essence of meaning. Having said that, I have to say there were many cases where I felt in The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated by Martinez, he captured passages in a way that resonated as something truer to my understanding of things. I cannot speak to what is a better translation as I have no experience with the original ancient languages. I can only compare with my own perceptions as I understand things and try to remain open to truth wherever it comes from.Whatever translation you choose, I advise the reader to take the effort to read at least some edifying Dead Sea Scroll manuscripts like the Thanksgiving Scroll (1QH, 4Q427, and 4Q429), Wisdom scroll on the Secret of the Way Things Are or Mystery of Existence (4Q416-418), Blessings of the Wise (4Q525), and Apocryphal Psalms of David (11Q5-6; 4Q88, 4Q448). There are many delightful nuggets of wisdom that are sure to enlighten and uplift in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Your time will not be wasted in searching them out.
