Chuck Dixon is the writer who made me love Nightwing as a character and I've been fond of him ever since his Bludhaven series that, essentially, made Dick Grayson work as a solo character. The destruction of Bludhaven ruined his newly created system but he managed to recover with the extremely good GRAYSON series. That was basically doing a 1960s NICK FURY, AGENT OF SHIELD comic with Dick in his place and had a lot going for it. Sending Dick back to his solo career was a risky move but, having read the subsequent 4 trades--I'm very fond of it. Unfortunately, all of the good parts to the Rebirth Nightwing are missing here.Basically, this is a sequel to the execrable Court of Owls plot. I don't actually dislike the Court of Owls as I'm fine with any Illuminati stories and they were a decent one even if I don't believe Batman could miss, again, the Illuminati operating in his city without him noticing. It also has a focus on the ridiculous, "Hayley's Circus was secretly a school for ninjas" plot that was one of the worst elements of that plot. The premise of this title is Nightwing teams up with a Hayley's Circus ninja named Raptor (who kills Lincoln Marsh--a decent villain in his own right) who leads him down the Dark SideTM for a bit before going too far.I watched this story in the BATMAN: BAD BLOOD movie and it was more believable there because Damien Wayne was a child. Still, Raptor is surprisingly well written and the only reason this is getting 2 stars out of 5 instead of 1. Raptor is a Romani circus performer who encourages Dick to embrace his heritage as well as identify more with the underclass than his rich foster father. Class politics are always timely and Raptor makes a lot of lot of good points that Batman's vigilantism reaks of privilege--sadly, they don't have Bruce address any of them which is easy enough to do. After all, Bruce primarily goes after terrorists, serial killers, and mobsters versus the working poor. Nope, Bruce doesn't mention any of that.In any case, it's not terrible but there's a lot of weird moments spread throughout it too. There's also a lot of Batgirl/Nightwing tease which goes nowhere and is annoying for those of us who support the pairing. It's also weird because they've aged Batgirl down to her early twenties/late teens and aged up Dick to 28 or so--when Barbara used to be older.

I thought this was a lot of fun, the partner/villian of Nightwing was a really amazing character and I hope to see more of him in the future, however I had a problem with this volume. I love Nightwing as a hero, he's awesome, and when he became a spy in Greyson it wasn't really my thing. I liked him as a hero and it kinda turned me off of that comic, so when I had heard he was coming back as a hero I was extremely excited, however this first volume was basically still Greyson the spy while wearing his Nightwing costume. The entire volume he's tieing up loose ends of his spy life and infiltrating an organisation.... Like a spy... I want the hero, not the spy.

Great art and a great story. What more could you want? Perfectly captures the spirit and personality of Dick Grayson. I love the character interactions in this, from the ever changing relationship between Dick and Bruce to the brotherly bond of Dick and Damian. Perhaps the best part of this story is the introduction of Raptor. An incredibly entertaining anti hero that Nightwing is forced to team up with. They are great on the page together, from fight scenes to casual banter. Best new DC character in a long time. I look forward to the future he has in the DC universe; he would be a perfect recurring antagonist for Nightwing.

My last nightwing comic was the spyral series. He grew on me and I decided to start the rebirth series. I never finished spyral volumes but I picked this up and am not disappointed. With small recap of the spyral ending I'm on track and dove in this story. His new "teammate" made for a good story. Beautiful colors and art. Good quality.

Great return story for a fan favourite character. Captivating art and a fast paced storyline contribute to the overall excitement of revisiting the past of a hero, who has always been one of my favourites.

Just started reading comic books again. I started with Batman Rebirth, Nightwing Rebirth, and The Flash Rebirth. I have to say Nightwing's comics is really well drawn and has an amazing storyline. I love how Tim Seeley did. Great way to start comic books or to get back into comic books.

A great kickoff to a great series. If you're on the fence, checkout Nightwing Rebirth!

This new Nightwing story-arc is the I have read in a good while, I highly recommend it

I actually hugged this book after reading it. It's just such a beautiful story. If you're looking for a character driven coming of age story, you'd probably like this. The plot isn't that heavy, and the prose can be very sparse, so you certainly have to long the characters to enjoy it. But it's nearly impossible not to love these two boys. One thing that impressed me about this story was the nuance in the relationship between Ari and Dante. There's so many subtle moments in their friendship that it wasn't until the very end of the book when I realised how things would turn out. Ari himself wasn't sure how he felt, and the reader wasn't always sure either. I've rarely seen a friendship with so much depth.

I read this for the #ReadProud challenge, Week 3.This was a contemporary gay YA novel featuring Mexican-American teenage boys. It was a very fast read, with many many very short chapters - I have a weakness for short chapters, so I liked this a lot.It had wonderful characterization, and angsty teens who came across as actual angsty teens and not some sort of novelistic cliché. I especially loved that (minor spoiler at the end*) - I had that experience (with being trans) where other people knew before I did, and it is not something I see in fiction a lot. I also liked that the parents were well-rounded people and characters in their own right.I also really liked the cover and the fact that 1. there was calligraphy on the cover 2. the calligrapher was credited (Sarah Jane Coleman). But there was one part where I did feel that the book kicked me in the jaw, and not in a good sense. This is a major spoiler, and it is about anti-trans hate crimes:(spoilers from here onward)The crime that the protagonist's older brother is jailed for is revealed toward the end as.... he killed a trans woman ("transvestite" - sic) sex worker in what seemed to have been a "trans panic" episode. Now. It is made amply clear throughout the book that the brother committed a real crime, so I was glad that it was revealed to be a real crime and he wasn't innocent. BUT. The fact that a lot of the plot involves the family coming to terms with his being in prison, AND the fact that out of ALL possible crimes, the author had to choose this one, really made me feel uncomfortable. I will also probably not pick up the upcoming sequel, because I really don't want to see more 'coming to terms with' with that. This was just one paragraph in the book, but it really soured me on it. Without this paragraph, it would have been an easy five stars... but this changed the interpretation of an entire plotline, and in a way that felt gratuitious to me, especially seeing as this was the only time trans people appeared in the novel.and the minor spoiler from above:* - one of the characters had to be cluebatted about being gayMy usual disclaimer about where I got this book: I bought this one with my own money.

This book was a real, gut-wrenching portrayal of life as a teenager, of the growth experienced both physically and mentally. Ari, so used to being alone in the world, is found by the angel that is Dante. Dante opens Ari's mind to new ways of seeing the world, to emotional extremes that tug at the heartstrings and make one's heart soar like a sparrow. The two boys explore each other as well as themselves, searching for answers in a universe that so often keeps the truth close to its chest. They find that they see some of the answers in each other's lives. The way that Dante sees the world is enchanting in all of its positivity, in all of its golden, innocent glory. Dante seems to see the world as it should be, and that makes him endearing as a character. Ari is a magnificent counter to this, an angry, curious boy who's father seems far from reach, who's brother seems to have been forgotten by his family.Ari and Dante entwine in their differences to create a match that flames in the darkness and lights the way to their adult lives. This lovable story of two friends who grow together in their many questions about the lives they live is one of the best YA books that I think I will ever read. I hope that whoever reads this incredible book loves it as well.

What a sweet, healing, much needed book. The book follows the character Aristotle as he learns to open up and work through his family trauma, depression, and romantic attractions. It was really emotional at times, and I wasn't always encouraged by the way Aristotle handled LGBTQ topics, but I was really pleased by the way the book ended. The author was very effective at portraying so many tough feelings and experiences and bringing them all together for a satisfying conclusion. Also, I loved the cover art.

I really enjoyed this book. It had a slower pace that made for a peaceful read. I assume most will go into this book thinking this is going to be a romance between Ari and Dante, but I think it's so much more about friendship and family. Ari is so closed up and pushes people away. His friendship with Dante changes him. I also loved seeing Ari's relationship with his parents. I love when families play an active part in a YA book, and both Ari and Dante's parents are important characters in this one.“I renamed myself Ari.If I switched the letter, my name was Air.I thought it might be a great thing to be the air.I could be something and nothing at the same time. I could be necessary and also invisible. Everyone would need me and no one would be able to see me.”There is something so real in Saenz's writing. It wasn't trying to be too poetic. Simple but piercing. I loved how beautiful this coming of age story was. I loved Ari. He is introspective and reserved, but also passionate and fiercely loyal to those he loves.

Great book, the story is woven at the border of visible with the invisible. It has a warm tone and this warmth envelops the hero’s journey. Great message, nice read. I hope we will get to read more of the writer’s story, she has a unique voice. For the feminists, the main character is a women heroin and you will enjoy the depth of her character.

I have to give kudos to the editorial team that handled the translation of both the Moribito books. I find translated books tend to be stilted and clunky in general. Not the case here! You'd never know this wasn't an English book in the first place.I loved the first one, but I have to admit that the second book is even better than the first. More satisfying, more sympathetic, more engrossing - and I loved the first one! Moribito satisfies with a tremendously rousing story that grips you and keeps you on the edge of your seat, and takes you to a completely different world that feels so original and fascinating. And I have to tell you, I had no clue what to expect in the grand finale. It was so original and impressive - and I tend to be the type of person who guesses everything that is going to happen. They say there is no original ideas - well, when you aren't familiar with another culture, it becomes original to you. And this book is fascinating for that reason.Balsa is also one of the best kickass heroines I've had the pleasure of reading. She was a bit stiffer in the first one, but in this story everything becomes personal for her, and we really get to see her true personality - and she rocks! I honestly can't wait for the next in the series.

I initially watched the anime, which covers only the first book. When I realized this second book was going to take place in Kanbal, Balsa's homeland, and not include any of the characters introduced in the first book, I was a little slow and unmotivated to get started with this. Another thing that made it hard for me to get going was knowing that the other books in this series have not been translated into english, and as far as I know, they possibly never will be.Still, I loved the book once I got going. Balsa is intelligent and a character to admire. This book did a great job shedding light onto her past, with so many unexpected revelations about it. And the ending was so poignant. It didn't pull any punches with the complicated feelings between she and Jiguro, who sacrificed the lives of eight of his closest friends to protect Balsa as she was a child. I'm now sad again that I've finished the book. She's heading back to New Yogo, to see Tanda again, and I would very much like to go with her. I wish they would translate the other books.

My thoughts on this one are pretty similar to the last - its strengths and weaknesses are much the same. Prose is smooth but a touch flat, world building is astounding - although in this one I did think Uehashi got a little carried away with the food. (Food is good! And oft-neglected in fantasy worlds! But geez.) This book had even more political intrigue than the last one, and I was totally hooked by it - for the second half of the story I barely came up for air.I missed Tanda and I hope he'll be in the next book (if, indeed, the next book ever gets translated into English, s-sob). The end of this book seemed to indicate he likely would. Also, this line? "Magic weavers can see spirits, right, Tanda? If I die, I'll come back to you as a spirit." BAWLING, OTP FOREVER GUYS.

Though skimpy on the pictures within with only maybe 4 top! I read another series called 'Dirty Pair' and it had a picture almost in every 15 pages! I love takubans because they are all eye candy mini novels for the most part and it's great to read a translated version of any Japanese release. On the story, it feels like Balsa's tale comes to an end here in her second story that pretty much wraps up everything about her life. That's a shame because I really wanted to read on her other exploits, but it was a wonderful ride in the end.I suggest to all if you're interested in this and the first book 'Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit' I also recommend the T.V. Anime adaptation of the first book. It's done by the same company who did the 'Ghost in the Shell' T.V. show!

I loved the anime and wanted to read more about the the characters next journey. This was a great read! Similar spirit/nature theme as the first story. And we come to know more about Jiguro and Balsas hometown. The writing was very vivid and captivating. I finished the book on a sunday, couldnt keep it down util it was over. I really wish the author would translate all the rest of the books in this series.

Perfect followup to the Moribito anime. I never read the first book, but the anime is one of my favorites. I know there are differences between the two, but it didn't affect my pleasure in reading this light novel. I loved it almost as much as I love the anime.

Dance of the Jakaranda, by Peter Kimani

Review

"Kimani's novel has an impressive breadth and scope. His illustration of the construction of the railway from Mombasa to the hinterland of Kenya in the early 20th century follows three men--a British colonial administrator, a Christian preacher, and an Indian--whose lives have intersected in unexpected ways."--Los Angeles Review of Books, "Reclaiming Africa's Stolen Histories Through Fiction""A fascinating part of Kenya's history, real and imagined, is revealed and reclaimed by one of its own."--Minneapolis Star Tribune"Transporting the reader through history, the book leaps to the 1960s with the taste of independence in the air. Our protagonist is now Rajan Salim, grandson of Babu. As the doors of the Jakaranda Hotel remain open, everywhere you turn there is a reminder that although the colonialists may be gone and the war may be over, the battle has just begun."--African Arguments, included in list of Must-Read Books of 2018“Dance of the Jakaranda, the new novel by Peter Kimani, is a layered and moving exploration of the history of Kenya, juxtaposing a story of conflict during the nation's colonial period with a narrative set in its early days of independence. It's a novel in which the central characters constantly surprise the readers, and Kiman's explorations of history encompass multiple sides of art and infrastructure.”--Vol. 1 Brooklyn"Destined to become one of the greats...This is not hyperbole: it's a masterpiece."--The Gazette"But the novel has way more strengths than I can describe here, including the beauty of lyrical narration that combines irony, flashback, humour, allusions and inter-textual references, all of which are expertly manipulated to give the reader a gem of a story populated by composite characters, a story that, though revisiting old themes and times, does so with the freshness that one would expect of established literary geniuses."--Daily Nation"The author has built here not only, on these pages, not only a railroad, but the singular triumph of a highly diverting novel. Besides weaving an excellent plot-line, he offers the reader a classic, understated writing style that haunts much of this book, turns it into a minor masterpiece."--RALPH Magazine, Starred review"Dance of the Jakaranda is colorful and ironic...A fascinating story told in an unforgettable voice."--The Guardian (Trinidad & Tobago)"Peter Kimani, an acclaimed writer and poet, has brilliantly constructed this novel's plot...[His] lyrical prose, such as portraying the train as 'a massive snakelike creature,' and his breathtaking descriptions of 'God's country' bring the beauty of the land before our eyes."--Historical Novels Review"A rich tableau of layers and textures…The book has some brilliant moments of vivid and evocative writing."--Huffington Post"Through lyrical, seductive prose, Peter Kimani weaves an impressively intricate tapestry of events and characters that give much-needed names and faces to an important facet of Kenya's colonial history."--Black Books Quotes"A compelling story conveying a powerful social and cultural critique along with a marvelous portrait of the beauties and wonders of Kenya, all punctuated with tragedy."--New York Journal of Books"This very human face of a multi-racial developing country shines a light on not only our differences but our very basic similarities."--Eyes on World Cultures"An epic account of 20th century Kenya."--Africa Is a Country"In this clever and mesmerizing story, the author takes the reader on a journey to another time and place, where twists and turns provide a truly entertaining ride."--SusannesBooklist"Kimani steps into the minds and hearts of all his characters, regardless of the colour of their skin and decisions they have made, be they good or ill."--A New Day"I loved the storyteller's voice and the gradual unravelling of the secrets of past generations, which had long shadows that reached into the present and affected the young couple at the heart of the story. The historical matter is deftly woven in."--The Girdle of Melian"Dance of the Jakaranda is a rare gem: a new story, a new voice, a new way of seeing the world. This is what a brilliant novel looks like. Peter Kimani is a rare talent, an important new literary voice in Kenya, in Africa, and the world."--Mat Johnson, author of Loving Day"In this racially charged dance of power, the railroad into the interior of the country becomes a journey into the hearts of men and women. It is a dance of love and hate and mixed motives that drive human actions and alter the course of history. Kimani's writing has the clarity of analytic prose and the lyrical tenderness of poetry."--Ngugi wa Thiong'o, author of Birth of a Dream Weaver

Post colonial literature in Africa is rich and troubling, as it is in Asia. This book cannot stand among the best, and its author cannot compare with the likes of Moses Isegawa or Chimananda Ngozi Adichie. The story is ragged and the characters wooden. Most upsetting is the stereotypes of Kenyan women as defined by their sexuality and fecundity when they are fabled for being such powerful contributors to rural economy and culture. With its potted history and lack of subtlety, I came to conclude that this was a lazy book, caught in a stylized time warp.

I almost quit reading this about a third of the way through, but persevered. In the end, I'm not sure it was worth my time. The story was nominally interesting and somewhat confusing at times. Use of the native language without translation was annoying, but I just moved on. I didn't care for the ending. What happened to Miriam? Did I miss something? The resolution of Rajan's situation was not satisfying and confusing.

Dear Mr. ArmaniI live in Trinidad and Tobago and live in the ruins of the colonial systems imposed by the British complete with a diverse community with strong East Indian presence.. Your book has reminded me of the similarities of the colonizers approach.....divide and rule policies ...even the Black Maria the van that took people to jail. What amazes me is how you have effectively captured the practical approach, thinking and humour of the East Indian. It was so well done that I thought you were East Indian yourself. Excellent work. Congratulations.

I'm not a reader of fiction, but was interested in the book because I do nonprofit work in Kenya. I downloaded a sample, and couldn't put it down from page one!!! Needless to say, I bought the Kindle, and may well buy the hard copy when I get back to the States. It's that engaging!!

Was this supposed to be historical fiction or magical realism? The story jumped from one unlikable character to the next and there was a Big Reveal at the end that felt more like a...huh, ok. There are misspelt words and easily googled anachronisms. I finished it but only under duress for a book club. I'm really hoping I just missed something.

The parts set in the early 1900s are quite intriguing. I wish the book had more of that and less of the 1963 story. Rajan's and Mariam's feels very much like a scaffolding. The novel would do just fine without it.

Didn’t appreciate the way it jumped back and forth in time. Spent too much time initially on Raj looking for the woman who kissed him in the dark. I did enjoy the way it explained everything at the end.

An important part of Kenya's history told from the perspective of the people of Kenya, as it was, from the back stage. Awesome story telling,

There's been a murder at a Garlic Festival in a small up-state New York town, and it's up to several of the festivals cooking contest participants to solve the crimes! This was one frustrating murder mystery. The lead character isn't particularly likable, with plenty of annoying traits, but few endearing ones. He never really solves the crime, his style is more scattershot, jumping from one vague theory to the next. Finally, he stumbles onto the killer who eagerly confesses his crimes. As one character says of the protagonist Gardner, "You're not a threat, just an annoyance."The author's style is much like that of his lead character, jumping randomly around the story, focusing on characters and then dropping storylines to jump to the next idea. At times these jumps are jarring and seem to come out of nowhere. As an example, Gardner and his boyfriend Jan go from minor grumbling over competing in the cooking contest to suddenly on the verge of breaking up their relationship all within a few pages. Their relationship is never really explored or explained in any depth and the reader is left wondering what would ever bring these two together in the first place. The murder mystery itself isn't half bad and kept me reading through to the end. I was more interested in the victims than in the people trying to solve their murders. The ending is a bit labored and the author's description of the setting for the big climax and the action sequences is rather sketchy. It was difficult to get a good visual image of these big events with the limited descriptions, though I must say that the climax would have made for a great scene in a movie or TV show.Would I read a 2nd book from this author featuring these characters? I'm undecided about that. I think the writer shows promise in constructing a mystery, but he needs to work on his plotting and story structure and make his main characters a bit more likable.

Murder Most Garlic explores the relationship between self-confidence and love, in the context of a highly entertaining murder mystery. City dwellers interact with locals while visiting a small rural town, producing a rich mix of characters. Gay couples figure prominently and offer insights that are a welcome addition to the popular mystery genre. Jump in: this is a fun and engaging book.

Gardner Lyon's life continues to fall apart, and he's clueless why relationships and jobs don't work out. Who can blame him for wanting to be really, really good at something? Neurotic, winsome and sometimes wearisome, he makes a boldly wild decision to solve a murder against the better judgement of his on-again, off-again boyfriend Jan and his sister Lane. Two mysteries get unraveled in this debut - 1. Whodunnit and 2. who IS Gardner Lyon? I look forward to more detective work by the entertainingly eccentric Gardner.

The book is a really fun read with an engaging plot, and great descriptions of a small-town life.I found it to be a very involving story ,and I finished it within days, because I was so interested in the outcome..I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, and I hope to see some of them in other works..

Murder Most Garlic is the perfect summer read. It has compelling, relatable characters. It is set in a memorable small town of Havana in Western New York that is struggling to survive, and has only a historic barn and opera house standing in the way of oblivion. While categorized as a LGBT Mystery due to its inclusion of gay and lesbian characters, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good who dunnit story.

I thoroughly enjoyed Murder Most Garlic! So entertaining and engaging! Ryan has such a great way with details and descriptions. I love Gardner's relationship with his sister, she will have your back if you commit murder! But my favorite description is the tea bag string stuck to the cup when describing his lovable hoarder friends! I may never look at a tea bag the same way. I look forward to more Gardner Lyon! I expect great things from him as he grows into the person he was meant to be! Oh yes - and there is wine!

Ryan Dietzen has cooked up a delicious small-town murder mystery in his debut novel -- it'll pull you in and leave you wanting to hear more from the main characters with their insecurities, complicated relationships, and loyalty to the small town they've visited since they were kids. The book has all the ingredients needed to take best of show at the Garlic Festival bake-off or on any mystery lover's bookshelf.

Ryan Dietzen’s "Murder Most Garlic" has an engaging and keep-you-guessing murder mystery plot, but that isn’t all. The layered characters are just as interesting, and there’s a secondary “mystery” in how the lead character’s relationship with his partner will fare. The descriptions of small-town Havana are evocative and create a meaningful context for the crimes at the center of the story. All in all, thoroughly entertaining! Just wish we had the recipes for the featured garlic dishes!

Review

"A large part of what makes Gucwa's atmospheric photography so enthralling is her mastery at capturing light. Through natural light she is able to convey seasons, moods, nostalgia, and introspectiveness in the midst of the bustle of New York." - Print MagazineVivienne Gucwa captures the moments that make our New York minutes -- a snowy Times Square, the Manhattan Bridge lit up at night, a quiet walk through the West Village. A book tailor-made for any Gotham aficionado. - New York Post"While Gucwa captures the everyday moments of the city, her photos also capture a dreamy element of the city." - The Weather Channel Online "They're not just shots of a city at night or in the snow, they're photos of The City somehow, something timeless and invoking a feeling of fantasy. I love her narrative, too; it adds so much depth to the photos, and a very personal sense of the experience. However you describe her work, whether you're a lover of New York, The City or just great photos in general, Vivienne's book is well worth the price!" - Imaging Resource"If you want an authentic account of what all the different boroughs and neighborhoods of New York City feels like, not looks like, then do yourselves a favor and pick up a copy of this book for yourself." - Photofocus"...this 192-page book is filled with beautiful images that capture the color, vibrancy, artistry and uniqueness of New York City. In short - it never looked so good." - Yahoo News

As a NYC native, resident, and as a photographer, I really couldn't be more pleased with this book. The images contained throughout have a markedly classic feel to them. The scenes possess an intimate sense of wonder as opposed to an impersonal and caricatured feeling that is all too abundant when it comes to NYC photography. Whether it's a lone figure in the snow, or an empty street, there is an overwhelming sense of humanity on each page--something that may come as a shock to those who (incorrectly) perceive NYC as a cold, thoughtless place. Each visual vignette is immersive. Whether it's an alleyway in Chinatown or a wide open street in Times Square, there's a sense of scale that magnifies both the size and the congestion of the city. The overall palette looks modern, but feels nostalgic. All the lovely imagery on its own makes for a good experience, but Gucwa complements her photos with personal, but relatable statements about her connection to her home, as well as her craft. The content switches between reminiscent stories, tales of wonder, and poetic passages; they come together as a sort of diary, its pages steeped in love and adoration for a city with many suitors. The images pull you in, but the text holds your hand as a personal guide. If you're a photographer (or an aspiring one), flipping through the pages should give you some additional satisfaction, as the camera model and settings have been included alongside each photo. The cameras vary in ability and technical strength, but it's clear that the images-- and their creator--do not.New York is often romanticized, so it's hard to do so in a way that feels unique and genuine. NY Through the Lens manages to accomplish this feat without feeling hokey or contrived. It's a really fantastic collection of photography and a strong collection of writing. Pick it up.

i bought my copy on Amazon on the cheap. i have been watching this very talented young woman for many years. i captured the same scenes of New York City when i was in my 20's and 30's. my captures were created using black and white 35mm negative film using a Canon F-1 camera. she has become an artistic friend on FAA artists web site. my favorite image she has created was taken in Chinatown in the early morning. secondly i am moved by her Central Park images captured following snow storms. she is one amazing New York based photographer you must keep your eye on over the next forty years. she will continue too create some of the most important New York images ever created.

NY Through the Lens is a good book for New York City residents, those who once were and those who hope to be. It's an across-the-board compilation of excellent photos from both ground and bird's-eye level. (A little too much of the latter for me -- the roofs of most NYC buildings look much alike.) Ms. Gucwa nabs all the usual suspects -- Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. -- but also features not-yet-gentrified neighborhoods (at least not obviously in the hands of the 1%); snowy streets, many at night (my favorite chapter); and street scenes reminiscent of a Scorsese film. She has a very good eye, and obviously spends a lot of time outside with her camera. Being a former harbor worker, I'd like to see more shots from the water, folks on the Staten Island Ferry, and so forth -- maybe she'll include them in her next book.Unlike many photo books, this one has coherent text, too, written in an almost confessional style that tells me more about Ms. Gucwa, a NYC native but from the far side of the East River (Queens). She is a good writer, adding just enough text to make the book more interesting, not so much you read half and move on. Her captions are mostly good, but many are repetitive if the pictures are similar -- in the vein of "Rooftops looking north from Empire State Building," "Rooftops looking south from Empire State Building," etc. But essentially it's a good read as well as a good look.Photographers take note: This isn't a photo how-to book, other than teaching by example. Ms. Gucwa includes info on camera, ISO and lens settings, but doesn't say what lens she used. In some cases it's not an issue -- she took many of the photos on her iPhone -- but when she used a pro level DSLR, I would have like to know what glass she shot through. Not that buying the same lens would make me as good a photographer....Despite its few minor slips, NY Through the Lens is a great book for folks who love the Big Apple. I'm glad I bought it, and I think you will be, too.

I am a born-and-bred Brooklynite with a tremendous sense of pride for my home. I also haven't lived in NYC since 2002. While I visit home about twice a year, I strongly identify with the big city in a lot ways. It defines who I am and how I act, even if I currently live in the laid back area of Portland, OR. I love reminiscing over my time back home and do often feel that tinge of regret about leaving. And then Vivienne Gucwa released her wonderful book, NY Through the Lens. The reason why this book is so special is not so much about what it is but rather about what it is not. I have a number of photography books dedicated to New York and the one thing that I noticed about them is their homogeneity. The pictures within these books seemed to blend together without conveying a sense of place or time. That's where Vivienne's book shines so brightly. The book is filled with purposeful photos that showcase a clear sense of place. They also exude with personal emotion, as illustrated by her wonderful writing and poetry that accompanies her imagery. I flip through this book not because I want to see what my home looks like but because I want to remember what it feels like. So thank you, Vivienne. You've done this New Yorker proud.Disclaimer: I am lucky to consider Vivienne a personal friend. Despite this, I preordered this book and paid in full just like so many of you. I am writing this review solely because I want to do my part in promoting it, as it deserves to be seen far and wide. I was not compensated in any way for it.

After reading enough True Crime books, especially when they’ve been written by a particular author, you slowly become anesthetized; or to use simpler terminology you’re rendered physically insensible regarding how far an individual’s level of depravity can reach. After reading almost two dozen books where the murderer[s] have gone to extraordinary lengths to cover up their unbelievable heinous acts towards men and women, you reach a point where almost nothing they might do would be surprising. However, in this outing, the author of this book, Jack Rosewood, gives his readers a detailed, well-researched look at Wayne Williams, an individual whose dozens of victims, mostly black male children, started to disappear off the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. Given this specific trait of the victims, naturally the anxiety which arose gave the black community and the nation, the idea that these innocent children were being target by a xenophobic individual. These acts of violence became know as the Atlanta Child Murders, and it took an army of trained law enforcement individuals from a multitude of organizations to ultimately apprehend and arrest this mindboggling murderer. And just like the television program “You Are There” [1953-1971] hosted by Walter Cronkite, Mr. Rosewood allows his readers to observe the new investigatory techniques using fiber evidence [simply thin filaments of material that can be either organic or synthetic] that an individual had been at a specific location, and the profiling of individuals in order to identify the likely suspect[s] to a crime. However, Wayne Williams, who instead of his appearance, seemingly to be an unfashionable and socially inept and boringly studious individual; in reality had been the sadistic serial killer they’ve been looking for. And as in all of his books, the author endeavors to tell his readers what had been the possible reason for the transformation from a nerdy child into one of the most copious serial murderers of blacks this nation has known. For giving me and his readers another shocking, page-turning book, I’m giving Mr. Rosewood the 5 STARS he’s garnered.

But I remember this. I'm from Atlanta and lived through this time and before it and after it. This book could've included much, much more. I'm sure Ann Rule would've been much more descriptive. There were entire paragraphs that includes only one sentence. This didn't have to be the case. It seems the writer took newspaper articles written at that time and summarized them. The articles at that time included more information than this book. It was interesting, and for someone reading about this who is not from here, it will be more interesting than I found it to be. I'm sorry to not be more positive in my review. This really could've been a much longer book. The families of the victims and information about the victims and their lives would be been a caring thing to include. The losses of the lives and the impact of the losses would be been good to include. Feeling empathy for them...

kindle unlimited, normally don't single book, do the collection volumes and so on, just so much to read AND except for him, don't read true crime etc, as the writer & stories are predominantly gross out city {and Ii can talk about dead bodies etc while eating, so not me}, but freebie day and wanted to see what it was about, yet another book from the prince of gruesome. From the summer of 1979 through the spring of 1981, Atlanta, Georgia was held under siege by a serial killer and dozens of victims started to appear. The series of murders, which became known as the “Atlanta Child Murders case,” gripped the city of Atlanta with fear and shocked the nation because most of the victims were children. The fact that the victims were all black and mostly male caused many in Atlanta’s black community to fear that their children were being targeted by a racist conspiracy. In this true crime book you will read about how the Atlanta Child Murders case put a city under siege and how a task force of law enforcement officers from several different agencies eventually captured the killer. You will follow the investigation as the police use what was at the time fairly new techniques of criminal profiling and fiber evidence to capture and convict the killer. For many around the country, once the killer was arrested, it was difficult to accept. The killer was a young, nerdy-looking man named Wayne Williams. To many people his background didn’t seem to indicate he was a serial killer, but the professional profilers knew otherwise!

Reading any of this authors books will never disappoint you as he does extensive research on both the criminal and victim(s). The only thing I hate about his books is they end. I always look forward to his next book.

I enjoy Mr. Rosewood's style of writing and I remember years ago seeing a movie about this case .My brother whom is a police officer in Atlanta has also told me about Wayne Williams and so I knew some about him prior to reading this. The Atlanta Child Murders were horrific but I have always felt there were other people responsible as well and not just Wayne involved.I know that he was caught dumping evidence and finding fibers consistent with carpet he had was definitive, but I still think he didnt murder all of them. The sad truth was so many were murdered before anyone took notice and so young. Its just a sad horrific crime and I do believe Mr Rosewood did emphasize on the key elements of as well as background on Wayne.I personally don't like reading long drawn out accounts of a true crime and material that isnt relevant as some authors do focus on. For this reason, this book is worth acknowledging and reading.
