A very disappointing buy. Brainy challenges???? Each "challenge" consists of a list of towns, lakes, counties, etc., and, on the opposing page, a map upon which the chalengee is to locate and encircle the listed places. It's like a Where's Waldo with a surfeit of Waldos. There's no challenge other than to squint for meaning in the light blue lettering for rivers and other bodies of water, though one can marvel at towns named Burnt Corn (Alabama), or the Fryingpan Creek (Colorado). As there may be up to ten labels per square inch on some state maps, the challenge is to not become annoyed by the senselessness of scanning for a named place. I'd envisioned questions such as, "Proceeding westward out of Yuba City (F6), what is the Route number you're traveling on, and at what city will you arrive at that Route's terminus?"

I expected this to be a fun book. I thought I would be finding places I'd been and places I want to go. But the Task given with each map is to find dozens of obscure towns, rivers, state parks, etc. This requires looking all over the map with a magnifier for each one. I developed eye strain and a tension headache, not to mention motion sickness from searching/reading back and forth over and over again. Each of the maps is a portion of the USA states A-M. I didn't notice that this is a Volume 1, implying it was 1 of 2 or more. It does not even have all of the states included in A-M, such as Alaska, for example. I did take one state I am familiar with, and found nearly all the counties assigned. But that was because counties names are one of the largest fonts, and red, so they are easier to find. The towns, rivers, lakes, and state parks are in tiny fonts---and it is frustrating to try to find them. I have given up using the assignments, and am just going through the maps and marking places I've been or am interested in. But since each map is incomplete, I can't mark all the places I want to in the A-M states they chose. This is the only 1 of 4 Brain-type books that I did not enjoy. I do plan to buy other, non-atlas books.

This puzzle book give gives you a series of state maps (less than half the states are in volume one. I assume the rest are in volume two.) They then provide a list of towns, bodies of water, and other geographical features for you to find on the map. Yes, the print is fine and it might take a while to find all the items on the list. But that's what makes it a fun challenge. And if you are unable to find a few, there is an answer section in the back.This is sort of like a word search puzzle, but using maps instead of a letter grid. But unlike with a word search puzzle, this is more interesting, and even educational. You'll discover geographical features you knew nothing about, even if you've visited or lived in that state. And while some reviewers complain that it doesn't really teach you how to read a map, I think it does. You'll learn how various geographical features are represented by studying the map legend. You'll learn to use a map grid. You'll get used to using maps and looking things up on them, since Google makes finding map items far too easy.So put on your reading glasses or wield a magnifier, and get ready to explore the US the old-fashioned non-Internet way!

My wife got this for my 12 year old daughter whose geography knowledge is pretty pathetic as a fun way to learn. Well....if it helped you learn how to use maps, figure out important parts of the state, or give clues to help you find places (i.e. 30 miles North of Phoenix on state road 87), then it would have some redeeming value. This is nothing more than a word find game with emphasis on small towns. It literally must have taken someone and Rand McNally a couple hours to put together this piece of garbage. Not cool.

I absolutely love this book and it's idea! I knew it was going to be like a word search only with towns, cities, rivers, lakes, etc. However after reading the reviews of others and experiencing the book myself. I would have to agree with one of the reviews which mentions a more role playing type of book where the challenges are in the form of questions, such as the one written "Proceeding westward out of Yuba City (F6), what is the Route number you're traveling on, and at what city will you arrive at that Route's terminus?" That to me would make for a great Volume 3 and 4. Another great idea, in my opinion, would be to create a map it for other countries in the world. Who wouldn't love learning about that, right?Overall GREAT concept and a great buy if you want a more challenging "word search" puzzle!!

I love these! I'm just plain hooked on both this one and already bought volume 2. I'm pretty obsessed with maps in the first place so this is a great alternative to crossword puzzles (that of which I'm terrible at), sudoku (I can get extremely frustrated sometimes), and word search (uh blahhh). Following the completion of the Idaho search, my boyfriend and I are now planning a trip out there!For those of you not expecting to see the entirety of each state, research a bit more about why this is the way it is. Maps are created based on grids! If you really thought you were going to see the entire state on one page then you'd need a huge book or a very powerful magnifying glass! Do a little research before bashing something that's been standardized for the entire time printed maps have been in existence.My only complaint is that I have found some minor spelling errors either in the list or on the map. Easy enough to figure it out using context clues tho! Thanks for developing these!

The activity book is exactly as shown. I purchased for my dad. The writing is small inside, which is customary with maps, so he'll need a magnifying glass but it's going to be a fun diversion for him. He loves everything about maps and this will be a fun challenge for him since he's chair bound now. This will be a great change from crossword puzzles and word searches that he's bored of. This book is about the history of consumer borrowing in the U.S. It is not some kind of a personal finance book.It starts out with a scenario where a young couple needs a mortgage. They go to a local bank, where they are encouraged to take an â€œinterest-onlyâ€ balloon mortgage. They take it, but when the economy tanks, and their monthly payment soars, they realize that they made a mistake. The house is repossessed.The year was 1932â€¦not 2008.With this, the author sets us up for a history of consumer borrowing in the U.S., including for real estate.About my only complaint with the book is that I would have liked more information about the consumer boom in the 20s. This was the era when personal loans began to be based less on assets, and more on repayments. Stores did not want to repossess refrigerators. The 20s were the first great age of consumer debt in the U.S., and this went strong until the advent of The Great Depression, which began in the early 30s.After that, it would not be until after WWII that a consumer boom would reappear. By the late 40s and through the 50s, incomes were steady and few lost their jobs. Borrowing and the accumulation of debt were back in style. In the words of the author, â€œThe postwar suburb was a debtorâ€™s paradise.â€Per the author, the thesis of the book is about â€œhow Americans came to rely on expected future income, rather than money in hand.â€ It is also about how credit â€œhas the capacity to enrich our lives and to make our dreams come true.â€ But all this is not without risk.The author gives us a history of consumer debt in the U.S., and he makes the point that, as it was promoted and perfected, it led to the mentality that â€œnever before has borrowing been so central to how (an) economy works.â€Although there was credit for farmers and mortgage brokers going back to the 1880s, up until the 1920s, for the most part, Americans paid for what they could afford in cash. Even the Model-T Fords were bought in cash, the price of which had dropped by the mid-20s down to less than $300. Henry Ford wanted nothing to do with promoting sales via financing. But the General Motors Acceptance Corporation was all about financing, and it soon put Ford Motors out of business, as it urged consumers to buy on credit.The collapse of the real estate market in the 30s meant that consumers needed government protection. In 1934, the Federal Housing Administration (FDA) was established to provide a means for people to buy homes, as a way to pull the country out of The Depression and restart the economy. Up until this time, the mortgage industry had been a local and regional industry. This took it national. Per the author, the suburbs were built through this mortgage program.On to consumer goods, most televisions bought in the U.S., starting about 1950, were bought on credit. This was the age of the large department stores, and the more credit issued, the more merchandise was sold. Americans embraced debt; and, as a bonus, interest paid was deductible at tax time.The 60s ushered in the discount department stores, such as Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target. These stores reduced their overhead by introducing self-service shopping. Customers loved it. And the discounters welcomed something else that was growing in acceptance: credit cards. These cards eliminated the need for the discounters to offer credit and/or to chase customers who were late in their payments.In 1970, only about 15% of American households owned bank-issued credit cards; by 1980, that percentage was up to 35%; by 1990, it was up to 65%.Borrowing increased even more in the 70s, as more and more women entered the workforce. Even small stores and independent chain stores prospered. People with money paid off their credit card balances each month; those with less money paid interest of 18% on their continuing balances. General Electric Corporation made more and more of its money via its financial component: GM Capital, or GMC.For homeowners, the 70s were also a boom in increased equity. As the value of their homes rose, American households could afford to buy more, take more vacations, etc. Mortgage debt was thought of as â€œgood debt.â€ And by the early 90s, home equity loans would become the prime way to â€œconsolidateâ€ debt.Up until 2007, home prices and the stock market rose, for the most part, in concert. Debt was not a major concern for most homeowners, who saw only rising values in their investments.To close this review, there is a good deal in the book, as well, about the secularization of mortgage loans, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, and other elements involved with The Great Recession that begins in 2008. I found it a good read, overall, and a good source of American consumer borrowing history.As an addendum, recent data from the federal government discloses that the U.S. public has a total credit debt of $3.84 trillion, and this does not include mortgage loan or home equity loan debt. Geeeezzzz!

Excellent book to understand the roots of credit and consumerism in the U.S. It relates how we converted from savers to spenders with money we didn't have. We became spenders with money we EXPECTED to have.

I think this is a relevant book for these times. Credit is not a sexy topic, but a book like this is useful in providing the background to the evolution of credit with our modern economy. By illustrating the significant relationship between consumer credit and what composed so much of the driving forces in our economy emerging before the 1920s, the author demonstrates the key role that consumer credit played during these times. After reading this book, I cannot simply point the finger and state that all things would be ok if we had limited the extent of credit. It is so tightly integrated with that relationship that I have no idea how our system (I extend this to the world) would be if credit had been as constrained as it was before the 1920s. I think he does a good job at breaking down the components of a credit relationship; that being why would would somebody extend credit to someone in the first place, to show how the misinterpretation of information, such as the ultimately useless meaning of bond ratings, contributed to the recent real estate bubble. On a personal level, I think the take away message is pretty clear; our system loves it when I am left holding the bag. His suggestion for resolving the current situation, that being that credit from an investment standpoint is preferred to tradtional investments that result in improvement in middle class living standards, is unique and thoughtful, although lacking in detail.

At 304 pages, this book seemed to drag on a lot longer than I thought. Though it was necessary to lay a foundation based on the history of our debt, the content was quite bland. I enjoy history more than most, but the information seemed like it didn't apply to now. Towards the middle of the book, it all started to come together though. Once the author started getting into more modern times, I became more intrigued. I then saw how the history was relevant to where we are now.The information and history has added to my knowledge. I was able to get something out of this book which allows me to recommend it as a decent read.

I have been practicing bankruptcy law for over 20 years. This book reflects what I have seen in my practice. I am not sure another government agency is the solution though.

I fell in love with this series back in December when I read Volume 1, Save Yourself, and had been looking forward to this volume ever since. It did not disappoint. I loved the title for this one and the way it plays into the plot.First of all, I totally love the theme of the series in general. We have a WOC protagonist who has decided that she has had enough with the status quo and the waiting around and takes matters into her own hands. She even uses the dragon that guarded her castle in place of a mighty stead. I mean, how could I not love it?So here we catch up with Adrienne and Bedelia, who is her personal blacksmith and sidekick. They are going to save Angelica! Or are they? Is Adrienne the only one to take matters into her own hands? Does Angelica even want saving? Adrienne has many sisters and while it should be easy to expect that they all be different from each other and nuanced and have different points of view, I also know that expectations like that usually end in disappointment.Not this time. Whitley has created this amazing world for us and gives us sisters who neither think the same nor act the same. The outlooks that Angelica and Adrienne have on their like situations are not at all the same and serve to manifest very different outcomes for themselves and those who come to find them.Personally, I loved Angelica. I loved getting another view on the subject of being so admired. I loved that the writers decided to just jump right into the alternative point of view and that none of it went in the direction that I expected. I also loved the rest of the family situation and the foreshadowing of the mysterious Black Knight that I have my suspicions about.As before, the art is wonderful. The way that Angelica is obviously a little older and is more beautiful and even a little sexy without being overdone or exposing anything was impressive. The rest of the art is fun and colorful and keep it obvious that it's an all ages comic. If you haven't jumped in on this series, I suggest you do. I've already started the third volume and plan to post it soon!

My 7 year old daughter LOVES them. I use these as "bait" to get her to read other books. I won't buy her a new one in this series until she's read a different, unrelated book. We're into the 4th book of the series and she has read 4 other books as well to "earn" these. Win/Win!

Great story for those with daughters that would like a positive role model. Main character re-writes the classic story and decides to save herself from the tower guarded by the dragon! Shows that castle/dragon adventures aren't just for boys! Also great to read to boys so that they don't get the idea that comics just contain boy characters, or that comics are just for boys. Great way to break the stereotype! Solid story full of adventure! My kids are a little too young for this, but my friends 9 year old daughter really enjoyed it!

Great series by a fantastic artist. I won't spoil it for you so I'll just end it here.

This was a very good sequel, and it seems that there will be more to come. The only thing I wish was that he made it a bit longer. Whenever I reach the end, I feel the need to read more of the series.

Princeless is such an amazing, inspiring, and crazy graphic novel! It really is the story that Disney should have been telling for years. Weather they are running away from an ice lion or trying to get rid of an annoying poet, the the blacksmith and the princess (or as I like to call them "the crazy hair girls") are always up to something. If you like graphic novels, funny books or comics with great art this is the book for you!

I like how it plays with fantasy and comic cliches. I picked up a copy for my daughter and nephews but enjoyed it myself. I thought the interaction between the sisters was the best part as it reminded me of the typical kind of fights you have with older siblings, especially those whose priorities are so different.

Whitley and Martin have created an instant classic that pokes fun at storybook tropes and empowers its female characters. A fun story for all ages, but especially loved by my young daughter.

I ordered this book prior to publication and was pleasantly surprised to receive it sooner than anticipated. I ordered this book because the downloadable user's manual from Motorola falls way short of hitting the target. I want to begin with the fact that I thought I had figured out just about everything there was to find in the XOOM which I am a really big fan of. I was sure wrong. This book has more tips, hints and solid information than I could ever have imagined. The author suggests the book as a reference rather than a sit down and read. However, I did sit down and read the whole thing cover to cover with my XOOM in my lap. I could only read a page or two before I had to try something new or change a setting that I didn't know about. The author clearly knows the XOOM and all of it's ins and outs as well as it's warts. After having read this book and having applied much of the content I value my XOOM even more than ever. This book clearly added much value. The pictures and layout are excellent and the 5th Wave cartoons that begin many sections just add to the enjoyment. The authors dry humor and wit added to the fun of reading and exploring.After reading, I had two questions that weren't answered in the book. I e-mailed the author and received a reply overnight that answered them both. If you want a book that will enhance your XOOM experience, this is the one.

Bought the Hardcopy first and was to big to handle.I have gotten used to reading my kindle. I am stillreading the "hard copy" and using the "kindle" as areference on both my Kindle and my Xoom. Yes the"Kindle App" on the Xoom alows you to read the booksyou have on your kindle. The "Xoom for Dummies" hasanswered a lot of my questions. I can not understandwhy Motorola would give you such a useless instrunctionmanual rather than a manual such as the "Xoom for Dummies".If you want to get full use of your Xoom this book is agood investment

This book has enabled me to use my Xoom. The Xoom just sat around my house for the first few months that I owned it because I didn't know how to use it. The manual that comes with it is just about useless. Thanks for all the help.

Although it is presumed that if you buy a Xoom, you are technically-savvy enough to work it well, this book is a great resource for those of us who want to know a little more. In reading the first chapter on set-up, I learned about checking for external storage and other updates, as well as how to create a new and unique unlocking mechanism. I would recommend this book for people who know enough to want to learn more and who's pride will not be hurt by the "Dummies" title.

Much better than the book I was given when I received the Xoom from a client.....This one focuses ONLY on the Xoom whereas the one I had was a generic for all ANDROID tablets......

I needed help learning how to use my new Xoom and searched half jokingly for a Xoom for Dummies book and there it was. It has answered many questions already and helped me feel more comfortable navigating this tablet. I love the humor and style these books are written in, just what I need, basic info for the not so techno-savy.

This book is a good introduction to the basics of the Xoom and usage of the Android OS used on the Xoom. The author's writing is clear and easy to understand. That being said, I do wish that there was a little more depth in describing each subject's details and inner workings. Worth the money. I keep a copy of this book on my Xoom using the Amazon Kindle app so that I may reference it's informational how-to guides.

Includes a handy chapter on HTML exchanges between server and browsers that will help sysadmins thrust into a Web server admin role.The book is clearly and professionally written, and contains excellent descriptions of the various configuration directives, with special attention paid to configuring multiple virtual sites on a single server.There is ample documentation on compiling Apache from source code. I'm sure that many new web administrators will not find this portion of the book necessary, given the now-ubiquitous availability of pre-compiled binaries in most Linux distributions, but it is nice to have the info as a reference.My sole complaint, which I also have with the other two Apache manuals I have read to date, is that after the first few chapters the books tend to get mired down in a line-by-line explanation of configuration directives. It would be much more valuable to system administrators new to Apache to have a few more process-oriented chapters. In other words, chapters which read "If you want to achieve x outcome, set y and z directives in the following manner, and this is why it works that way" are much more valuable to the new Apache admin with limited time on his/her hands than the more general "This is what directives x, y, and z do."Perhaps this complaint is really simply a problem with determining the target audience, which is spectacularly difficult to do online with these books, given the marketing hyperbole that serves as book descriptions - we'd all be better served by a Table of Contents on the description page.In any case, I heartily recommend the book as a desk reference for Apache configuration, especially if you need to run multiple sites on a single server, with the proviso that new Apache admins should look elsewhere for a more basic manual as well.

This book covers Apache 1.3. Apache 2.0 was in beta state at the time of writing.Despite that this is still one of the best Apache books, it provides solid background and explains how Apache works. For example, there is an excellent explanation of how "Order Allow,Deny" directives are processed which I couldn't find in other modern Apache 2 books.

I was beginner and this book really helped me get going. It still is on the shelf as good reference. Does the job for my home server.

Dated however it will help you under stand how to set up and run a apache web server.

Great material---just make sure you realize that the rental does not have the CDs. I've had to use YouTube and Spotify, which is not awful but occasionally the recordings are not exact.

It was super easy to return through my school's Amazon return system. The shipping was really fast and the book was in decent quality. It was so much better than having to buy the book myself. I definitely recommend renting the book from Amazon, it helps save a lot of money! They give you a due date and you just have to return it by that time and you should be fine!

The (rented) book did not come with an access code for the online listening materials. In order to gain access to them (which you will need to do if you want to get past the first three chapters), you have to then go on the website and purchase the e-textbook AGAIN for $50. It's still a little less expensive than buying the physical textbook new (I don't know if you can use the access code for a used one or if you'll even get one), but I'd recommend just going to the website of the publisher and buying access to the e-textbook there.

Really confused. If you rent a book, you need to be able to read it or there is no sense to rent it. It says on the front of book if we break shrink-wrap it is not returnable.

Used this book for my Musicology class at the University of Miami. I didn't actually need it, the class was based almost entirely off the professor's lectures. It did include some neat historical information, but otherwise I'd say its very much a standard textbook.

A guide for materials, how to write in various styles, and how to create calligraphy and lettering projects with numerous tricks of the trade and tidbits of artistic advice along the way.I taught myself calligraphy and lettering with a very simple book that came in a calligraphy pen set decades ago. Iâ€™ve played around with it ever since. But this book included loads of information about calligraphy pens, inks, and tricks of the trade I never learned from that simple book. If you want one book that will give you a good overview of just about every aspect of calligraphy and lettering, this is a fantastic pick. I havenâ€™t done a calligraphy project in quite a while but this makes me want to do one. The creators break things down in very easy to understand language, but obviously know their stuff. TL:DR;+ Great reference material for creatives and designers+ Nice design, easy to read and understand with pics and step by step instructions+ Comprehensive guide to traditional calligraphy (nib pens, illuminated letters, basic scripts, etc) and modern lettering (with emphasis on how to design/illustrate with letters and one chapter about chalk lettering)+ More info than typical "basic guide to" with useful tips and comments- Not really a minus but consider that it doesn't have many projects (not your weekend "do something pretty in 3 steps" kind of book)--------------------------------------------- The book is divided into 3 parts, first one is traditional and contemporary calligraphy, which includes all the basics plus plenty of tips, examples, different approaches and lots of alphabets. Then it moves into modern hand lettering. Lettering illustrations and chalk lettering are the main focus and, must say, this is one of the best books I've seen that makes it approachable for beginners without skimming off important information. The third and last part "creative lettering projects" is quite short, but the projects are really nice and you get even more tips from them. My favorite is the "personalized journal cover".This is indeed a complete guide to old and new techniques, with clear explanations, step by step instructions and color images to get you inspired and ready to give it a try. What I liked the most about this book is that it goes beyond general explanations; it deepens on those aspects that need extra consideration for newbies yet keeps things simple and relevant.
