Oingo Boingo gets a mention.Here comes the plot set-up, and maybe a ***SPOILER ALERT*** now.The year is 2044, and the global population endures its fourth decade of economic collapse. Huzzah. In a world of fading prospects and rapidly dwindling natural resources, everyone's favorite pastime is the Oasis, a massive, all-inclusive multiplayer online game that had metamorphosed into a globally networked virtual reality universe what's now habitually accessed by nearly everyone on the planet. Ernie Cline has crafted an immensely accessible story. He makes you swim in nostalgia. I'm not a 1980s buff, but I'm an old cat who actually lived his childhood thru the '80s, and it is so much fun trying to catch all of Cline's references. Ready Player One is a well-told, richly realized, and incredibly satisfying adventure, one populated by appealing characters. There's even a sweet love story. Wade engages in an online flirtation with a talented fellow gunter named Art3mis, and so we get a peek into Wade's gnawing doubts as to what the person beneath the Art3mis avatar is really like (and even what she really looks like). But that's just misdirection. It's another character who drops the startling reveal."Unputdownable" isn't a real word, yet it's the perfect adjective for this book. I think that everyone, at some level, has a grain of geekness in them. If you've ever envisioned scenes of your favorite cartoons or animes interacting, if you've once loved a movie so much that you've memorized entire passages of its dialogue, or been influenced by a rock song to the extent that you'd picked up a guitar to learn the chords... Ernie Cline revives these feelings. Ready Player One moves like a locomotive, and there are scenes in it that will absolutely explode your nerdy brain. Ready Player One was a New York Times Bestseller. It's soon to be a blockbuster motion picture what's directed by Steven Spielberg, and, self-deprecating guy that he is, good luck to him trying to tamp down on the book's references to his movies. I'm hyped for the movie. But the book came first, and the book will have an even more special place in my nerd heart. It's easily in my top five favorite reads ever. Ready Player One, yeah, an immersive, imaginative, childhood-mining, unputdownable read. Armada, not so much.

Reads like it was written by a high-school student. And to the people that think that's because it's POV: ALL of his writing is like that. Everything that the protagonist needs to happen, happens fine and everything works out because he is the chosen one of some rich nerd's world. It's the worst kind of wish fulfillment. I hate the term Mary-Sue but that's what this book is about.

I got this after seeing the movie and hearing from a few friends about how different the book is. My two main points after reading this book in 3 days:1. Love the 80's pop culture references integrated into the story. No book I've ever read has ever gone this deep into 80's game, movie, TV, music references. The writer is obviously a true 80's fanatic and geek. No doubt about that, this guy has lived it and did his homework.2. The main character is completely unlikable. He never arcs or changes, even at the end (finding 'love' is not a character change). Honestly, I've never read a book where the main character is just a complete and utter unlikeable character even to the end. You never really want this jerk to succeed. His inner workings and thoughts are as just about as bad as the main villain.Conclusion-Steven Spielberg did a brilliant job taking the meat of this story and actually making the primarily character LIKEABLE because the writer was just down right horrible at it. If the filmmakers had followed the book, no doubt it wouldn't have been successful. I did enjoy the 80's references, but too bad the main character was unlikable.

I can hardly understand the allure of this novel. Or how it managed to gain such popularity. Feels like its written for a fourteen year old, which is in such contrast to the age group who would either understand or have experienced anything that happens in this book... those of us in our late thirties, early forties. It read like a list of games and game explanations, with zero character development. I never finished... because I really didn't care about any of the characters in the book or what the outcome would be. I often found myself nodding off, chapter after chapter. It's a poor write... and a poorer read.

Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings as a 'myth for the machine age.' I think RP1 is an imaginative fairy tale for the online-gamer / virtual reality age. And the picture isn't pretty. I'm not talking about the cliche'd 'environmental apocalypse' of the outside world that the gamers actually live in, but the way that VR *is* their reality, and, to the characters, and in a very truthful way, the only reality that matters.That disturbing aspect of Cline's novel is imaginatively and entertainingly written. The first third of the novel is a marvel. I'd give it ten stars. The second two-thirds, like The Martian in many ways, is a bit repetitive and predictable in a TV-series sort of way.The novel is worthy and well-written, and the fairy tale aspect is touching. You end up rooting for the heroes and heroine, and even get a small glimpse into the motivations and heart of the villain (though I think he could have been much better presented, a la J. K. Rowling's villains).All in all, a highly enjoyable book. The best take I've read on VR and online gaming. Plus it's lots of fun!

Wow, what a book! This IS going to be a go-to-reference for the first private manned spaceship, SpaceShipOne. Instead of the title being “How To Make….” it could have been titled “How a Miracle Happened…” It is packed with so much detail and background story on how the private sector was able to step onto hallowed ground in 2004 that was previously owned by large tax payer funded government programs.For those that don’t know, SpaceShipOne is a spacecraft that completed the first manned private spaceflight in 2004. That same year, it won the US$10 million Ansari X Prize. SpaceShipOne now hangs in the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.SpaceShipOne was designed by Burt Rutan. And it was Burt Rutan’s confident leadership, engineering prowess, creative genius, and simple wackiness that propelled Burt’s small renegade team to achieve one of the biggest world news stories of that year.I know…. I was part of that team.I joined Burt Rutan’s Scaled Composites in 1988. I was hired in to be Scaled’s first structural analyst using FEM (Finite Element Methods) which is an advanced way of computer simulating aerospace structures to determine stress and stiffness. By the time the SpaceShipOne program started, I was selected to be the structural lead.As deftly described in the book and the documentary “Black Sky”, tension was at a level I had never experienced before on any Scaled Composites program. There was a general consensus that Burt had lost his marbles when he suggested to his small team of maybe 12 engineers that we could go from building subsonic propeller and jet aircraft to building a spacecraft that would go 3+ times the speed of sound and, oh yeah, go to suborbital space. But first, we would have to build the mothership, White Knight (WK), which will carry and launch SpaceShipOne at about 45,000 ft.Another benefit to a small team is that we were highly motivated to perform to the best of our abilities. This struck home one day when I saw the wife to one of SpaceShipOne’s test pilots. I clearly understood that I did not want to face a day where I might have to tell her that her husband died because of a mistake I made. The SpaceShipOne team was close knit.Engineers are naturally skeptical since they clearly understand the risks. But Burt eventually won his team over by methodically describing how we would mitigate those risks by first building WK using the identical cabin design and most of the systems that SpaceShipOne would use. It was a BRILLIANT way to build confidence by continually testing identical hardware on the mothership, WK.Flight test were equally well thought out by Burt. First flight tests were simply “captive carry” by carrying SpaceShipOne to altitude only. This was followed by drop tests allowing SpaceShipOne to simply glide back to landing and to test the unique feather deployment design. Eventually, flight tests were concluded with rocket powered flights that won the US$10 million Ansari X Prize.The level of painstaking detailed research that Julian Guthrie put into writing this book is obvious to me as an “insider”. I cannot find any errors or anything I would have changed. And it filled in a lot of the missing background story that I did not know that ultimately led to our successful climax. Wonderful job Julian!!!

Think back to Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and imagine if someone had told you that a handful of civilians, without a dime of government funding, would loft two humans into space a scant 43 years later. Yet, spurred by a contest with a generous financial reward, a group headed by legendary aircraft designer Burt Rutan did just that. Especially notable is that the prize money didn't come close to covering their costs, and that's why their story is such a compelling one. The prize was the spark, but internal forces far more profound were driving these people, and it's the human story we get in this book. Read it, then go back and watch the footage of the two winning flights and the events leading up to them. You'll then have a deep and satisfying appreciation for this extraordinary achievement.

A great read, The story weaves together half a dozen character-driven threads. It's all about a cast of large characters: Peter Diamandis (the promoter), Burt Rutan (aeronautics prodigy), John Carmack (software genius), Erik Lindbergh (son of the great aviator), Michael Melvill and Brian Binnie (test pilots). The story brings to life the competition that led to the first reusable commercial suborbital spaceflights, My personal favorite is Burt Rutan. His creations have been amazingly innovative. One of my favorite scenes has MIke Melvill riding on top of the Rutan Raptor UAV prototype, flying it back to base like a some old-time cowboy. The book is packed with great stuff. The winning flights, of course, are the high points of the story. You've got to love the professionalism, determination, calm and expert piloting under pressure of both Melvill and Binnie. The Right Stuff indeed.

The book starts out quite strong. Peter Diamandis, the founder of the X-Prize, is an a dynamo of activity. He is simultaneously attending Harvard Medical School and graduate school at MIT, launching a university, organizing collegiate clubs that turn into national organizations. He's the driving force behind the first part of the book, the writing is strong, and it makes for very interesting reading.Unfortunately, Part II of the book, which is about the trials and tribulations behind the founding of the X-Prize is brutal. All the momentum the author built in the first part of the book comes to a grinding halt. We follow Peter around to meeting after meeting and learn about the death of his friend. Quite frankly, I skipped the last few chapters of this part and I don't feel like I missed anything. This third of the book could and should have been summarized in one chapter.Part III, how Burt Rutan wins the X-Prize, gets interesting again. But by this point the whole thing is a bit disjointed.It's really three books in one and the author would have done better to focus on the building of a spaceship -- as suggested by the title -- and less on the building of a foundation. Peter Diamandis is an interesting character to be sure. And I can understand why the author wrote so much about him. He kept detailed notes on his life and tape recorded his thoughts. It's a goldmine for an author, but in the end, it doesn't serve the book. Peter doesn't make spaceships; Burt Rutan does.The book I was hoping for would have led me through all the trials and tribulations in building a spaceship in much greater detail and the engineering challenges that were faced and overcome. The book touches on this then spends more time recounting the two winning X-Prize flights. Clearly, this is a talented author who needs some guidance in organizing her material.

About the Author

Jeffrey Ian Ross, Ph.D., is a professor in the School of Criminal Justice, College of Public Affairs, and a Research Fellow of the Center for International and Comparative Law, at the University of Baltimore. He is the author of sixteen books including Special Problems in Corrections (Prentice Hall, 2007). During the 1980's, Ross worked almost four years in a correctional facility. In 2005-2006 he was a member of the Prisoner/Prisoner Advocate Liaison Group for the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine committee examining ethics and research with prisoners. Stephen C. Richards, Ph.D., is a professor of criminal justice at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. In 1983, he was convicted of conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Richards was sentenced to 9 years and served time in 9 federal prisons. Released from federal prison in 1987, he completed his M.A. in sociology (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 1989) and Ph.D. in Sociology (Iowa State University, 1992). His work has appeared in numerous academic journals. Jeffrey Ian Ross and Stephen C. Richards are also the authors of Beyond Bars: Rejoining Society After Prison (Alpha/Penguin, 2009) and Convict Criminology (Wadsworth, 2003).

I have a relative that was recently sentenced to 16-18 years in prison. Since no one else I know well has ever been to prison, I got this book before I even write them a letter. Having heard if I write the wrong thing or something that could be misunderstood or taken out of context, this book was a great investment. Now, from what I learned, I do NOT know if it is worth the trouble an innocent person can get into just contacting an inmate. If you even think you or anyone you know could end up in the U.S. prison system, read it! Remembering it. Worth every penny.

Ever since a friend of mine was incarcerated for murdering his girlfriend last year, I've been curious to what prison life is really like....despite all of the rumors. This book most certainly lays it out in very simple language about the details of prison life. Obviously there is a difference in all prisons across the nation, the book at the very least gives you basic details about it. One of the authors was incarcerated for a number of years in prison so wrote from his experience. It's a great book for the first time prisoner and if you can get it to him/her in prison, it would help solve a lot of issues they could get into and avoid while there.

While I don't think this book is good for those looking for a "how-to", it's a great book for getting a glimpse at how prison life is perceived by the inmates themselves.Much of the book (perhaps all?) is written from the inmate's perspective, and often that paranoid/persecuted voice overshadows some of the realities that, if presented and understood, would make some of the experience in "the system" easier. The author(s) portray everyone from the arresting officer to the attorneys and eventually the prison guards as people who are either "out to get" you or don't care. In reality most of these folks do want the inmates to succeed and be reintegrated into society."Behind Bars" as a good book if you just want to experience the thoughts and mindset of an inmate. It covers a few of the harsh realities of prison life, but doesn't go into much detail. It's probably a better book for someone who has never been in prison and is just curious. If the reader is an actual inmate, or wants to learn something that would benefit a friend or family member who is incarcerated, I'd suggest the authors' other book, "Beyond Bars" - it has several excerpts from this book but gives a more constructive overview of the many processes involved in reintegrating into society and staying out of prison.

Many incarcerated people who have "done time" know much of the information in this book; however, there are several useful topics to consider. This book may be most appropriate for the first term inmate. The authors wrote another book, "Beyond Bars: Rejoinging Society After Prison" that offers in depth parole planning resources. Still, this is a valuable tool for those who work with the incarcerated population since it contains information that one must know in working with this unique population.

About the Author

One of North America’s leading landscape designers, W. Gary Smith specializes in botanical gardens and arboretums, as well as public art installations and private gardens, often weaving together local ecological and cultural themes. He received the national Award of Distinction from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers for his work on Enchanted Woods at Winterthur Museum & Country Estate in Delaware and for Peirce’s Woods at Longwood Gardens and the Stopford Family Meadow Maze at Tyler Arboretum, both in Pennsylvania. Peirce’s Woods also received a Design Merit Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. His recent work includes the new Santa Fe Botanical Garden, the Gardens Master Plan and the Children’s Garden at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas, the Discovery Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the Therapeutic Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Alabama. I had read some reviews of this book and was hopeful that it would be a good resource. I was wrong. This is a fantastic resource and one of the best garden design books I have read. In terms of design it takes the reader into the nitty gritty of design and how important it is to look at landscapes from an artists perspective. But the best thing about Gary Smith is the style of his writing. He writes like he draws - with insight and passion. I am already looking at what I see with a new perspective, doing my sketches and being more reflective about what I see. This should be a text for all garden design courses and will be one of my go to resources on my bookshelf - or beside the couch or bed!

I heard W.Gary Smith speak recently. I was so taken with his vision and process that I HAD to own the book. All the slides I recall liking are in the book and his writing style is identical to his speaking style that I read it with his voice. 5 stars are not enough.

This book straddles several genres. It's a gorgeous coffee table book with lustrous photos of gardens Smith has designed and reproductions of his paintings and drawings. It's a memoir about his professional journey as a landscape architect, going all the way back to his junior high days as a member of the school Greenhouse Club. It's a travelogue through some of North America's most beautiful public gardens. It's a thoughtful discussion of the relationship between landscape design and the "fine arts": painting, sculpture, photography, dance, and music. And it's an inspirational and often humorous guide, showing the gardener and non-gardener alike how to bring serendipity and beauty to our yards and gardens.Smith writes well and manages to pull all of this off quite handily. I bought the book as a Christmas present for my husband, the real gardener in our family, but I have found myself re-reading whole sections time and again.

I have given this design book to several artistic friends. They love the ideas in it. Very readable too.

Gary's portrayal of the world is communicated through each page as he describes his first-hand account of how to create patterns and textures to bring life to your own garden. This book was helpful for me as a new homeowner, creating inspiration in my own backyard designs and bringing forth the artist from within. This book is a great resource for not only inspiration in your landscapes, but also, for helpful ideation in all parts of your life. Landscape architects and gardeners will enjoy this read, but it's also beneficial for people who incorporate artistic visions into their lives and work. Enjoy!

The book starts out with - you've probably been on the Keto diet for about 8 months. This book is similar to The Insulin Resistance Diet, which I think is better.

This book will help you learn more about Ketogenic Diet. Discover recipes that you can prepare straight from your kitchen thats definitely healthy, delicious and easy to prepare.

This book provides a great way to kick start your ketogenic diet. The recipes are really delicious, and easy. I totally recommended to read it before you start the diet.

This book is a perfect fit- plenty informative without bind too technical, and great recipes. The biggest fear health care professionals have about ketosis is the risk of it going too far, into a state of ketoacidosis. This happens when your ketone level goes too high, turning your blood dangerously acidic. The recipes are SO good and the meal plans take all of the guesswork out, I​ would recommend this book to anyone!

I highly recommend this book for several reasons. Easy to read. Not too technical. As an older person, I also liked the larger font. I really liked how they presented the information and gave you week to week meal plans, including yummy snacks. The back end of the book included very organized shopping lists according to each week.

I enjoyed this novel thoroughly. The characters are intense and the plot unravels and twists and you are trapped in the lives of the young people involved, and their parents and extended families. The Irish community were the history takes place is also well described and places and characters unfold in all their dramas and interactions with each other. The magic elements and the beliefs of the Irish culture appear in the shape of ghosts present in the minds of susceptible young people trapped in problems too complex for them to resolve.

I absolutely loved this book! It sucked me in immediately and I sat for 2 hours before I had to put it down! I couldn't wait to get back to it and was able to read it on a plane ride. The plane was landing and I wanted to keep flying to finish it! The character development is very detailed and I have clear picture of each person and a vested interest in what happens to each of them. The story took a twist and ended in a way I wasn't expecting but tied together brilliantly! If you like mysteries, get this book! You will love it! Bravo to L. M. Brown!

Gritty story taking place in 80s Ireland. Beautiful portrait of the friendship that develops between the 2 young protagonists who are dealing with tragedy in their lives and the solace they provide to each other.

L. M. Brown has a brilliant mind and it is illustrated in this book. I hope there is more to come!

The story starts out a little slow, but once the reader gets into it, you have the understanding that it needed to flow that way. The reader needs to connect with the characters, and see where it leads especially after a pivotal moment of tragedy and despair. It's one of those stories you don't want to put down, as you follow the journey of the characters, especially Andre. I’ve read a number of Brown’s short stories, and am always intrigued by her characters—she shows us just a little less than we think we need to know, and so much of the fun is watching her characters unravel, solidify, and transcend. Her debut book is no different. Andre, a young boy caught in a terrifying circumstance, has to figure out his way forward, and does so alongside Erin, an unexpected helpmate. Surrounded by adults with their own stories to tell, Andre and Erin fumble toward some truth, and emerge anew, for better or worse. Characters aside, Brown’s prose is pointed, yet allows itself to indulge in the rich surroundings of the greater Dublin community, and I particularly enjoyed the sort of sustained anticipation achieved in the book’s 154 pages, making it a very satisfying read.

I ordered this book from the seller BestStore4Books because it is the textbook that is being used with my graduate level quantum mechanics course next semester (Spring 2018), so I have not looked much at the material yet. I will update the review after next semester to discuss more about the material then, but for now I just wanted to comment on my initial perception of the quality of the international edition of the book. First off, I recommend international editions in general. They are far cheaper and the quality is typically enough to last at least one semester of traveling in your backpack and much longer after that sitting on your bookshelves. Also, for a back-up, you can almost always find a PDF through Google (this textbook, as other reviews have mentioned, actually has a free PDF made available by the publishers) and if you want to add extra protection to soft covers, you can cover them in clear contact paper which gives a similar protection as the clear covers added to soft covers in most libraries. Last semester (Fall 2017), I used international editions of the books Mathematical Methods for Physicists by Arfken, et al (published by Academic Press) and Classical Mechanics by Goldstein, et al (published by Pearson). In comparision, my first impression of this quantum mechanics book is that it seems slightly lower quality than those two international editions. The main areas where it seems to be lacking is that the cover seems slighly flimsier and the binding seems slightly weaker. However, I still think it will last the semester of traveling back and forth in my backpack. Also, oddly enough, from looking at the sides of the book the pages seem to be slightly different colors, unlike the other two international editions. (I have attached pictures for reference - the first is this quantum mechanics book, the second is the Arfken book, and the last is the Goldstein book.) Overall, though, I think there will not be much difference in use between this textbook and the other international editions, but my initial impression was that it is more cheaply made than the other two international editions. However, I would still recommend it since it is over $100 cheaper than the American edition. I will update this review after more use to comment on how well it actually stands up and also add information on the quality of the content later.

Any student of QM would do well to read Schiff's book, third edition, His explanations are relatively brief, but profound and to the point. He shows a deep understanding of his subject.

One very very thick book!Merzbacher's Quantum Mechanics is not the most popular graduate text for QM; however, it is one of the options that some professors will choose.This text tries to be a very thorough study of quantum mechanics, but at times it is definitely very difficult to follow. Let's say we're looking to study topic A, and you turn to the index to look for it. You'll most likely find it in several different chapters, linked to different topics.The book also doesn't give enough information for you to solve the problems inside, maybe this is just because I am just not bright enough though...Nonetheless, it would be worthwhile to buy this book if you're taking a class that requests it. It's very difficult to navigate the book in an electronic form.Happy shopping! :>
