I would recommend this book if you're interested in growing and would like an overview of what it entails. But if you're someone who is currently growing than this book will offer little helpful information to you. It is extremely redundant, literally whole paragraphs repeated at several points throughout the book. It also says very little about hydroponic growing; it is definitely more soil focused. There are much more detailed and helpful resources available that offer advice and solutions to problems when growing. Simply put, this book doesn't have enough information for you to have a successful grow.

I am a first time grower. I followed the instructions to the letter. Being first time grower it turned out fine.

It's okay. Nothing you can't find with Google.

Very good starter. Went from simple basics through the entire process. Very informative and contained good references for additional information.

Not very well written. Some concepts are repeated multiple times for some reason. No real facts, measurements or numbers.

A lot of great tips. Can't wait to put them to use!!! Very easy to read and understand. Thank you.

Awsome book. I am learning alot from this.

My State recently passed Medical Marijuana laws and I want to be ready for when we can grow our own. But I plan on growing outside and there's very little info on it. Just that you can do it.That's not helpful at all. I want to know more about soil types, about climate zones too. Then there's no info on fertilizers, no info of pests, insects, or fungus molds that might attack outside plants. So for me, this book was a waste.

This book could have been so much more. What an important and currently pressing topic Alex Kotlowitz chose to write about. The homicide and violent crime rate in Chicago is staggering. Kotlowitz says that in the past 20 years in Chicago, 14,033 people have been killed and roughly 60,000 have been wounded by gunfire. The vast majority of the killings happen in a small space in Chicago--but the violence has been spreading out all over the city. National and regional papers report of the killings daily.I've read another book by Kotlowitz and have found him to be a very gifted writer. He's an artist with words. He has a very smooth writing style and uses words to paint pictures in a way that few others can. I know little about what's going on in Chicago, so I was excited to learn more--especially through the writing of Kotlowitz. But this book felt flat.During a summer in Chicago, Kotlowitz chronicles the life of African American male teenagers and some men past their prime previously involved in gang violence. In only a few months, we learn of many gruesome murders and lives ruined by the violence.Kotlowitz seems to blame the failures of his main characters on the society that they've grown up in. Even when adopted out and moved to the suburbs, Kotlowitz's characters return to a life of crime. It's almost, as if, the main characters in the book are destined to kill others. Robbing people seems to be in their blood and hurting others seems to be the fault of the character's lapse of judgment, society, or something else. But Kotlowitz doesn't seem to rest blame in the murderer or perpetrator himself. The murderer or perpetrator is portrayed as a victim and his family as victims too.By the way--why aren't women included as characters in this book? Do they not perpetrate the violent crime? If they don't, then why not?The book is entirely predictable. In fact, it's so predictable that it's absurd. We're meant to see that the murders in jail actually are good people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe that's true. I don't know. But it's hard to believe that every murderer followed in the book has a good heart and is rather blameless. I would have liked to know more about the character's upbringing, their experiences in school, and the rest of their life. Two paragraphs--or even two pages--about any of these topics doesn't suffice. The violence in Chicago results from complex matters and it would have been nice for Kotlowitz to consider and develop each of the potential causes for the high crime rate. Glossing over the lives of the main characters and their families doesn't serve the topic justice.Perhaps it's worthwhile to read a few chapters of this book. But if you want to learn more about what's going on in Chicago, I'd suggest reading another source.

Excellent book on the effects of violence in Chicago. Generally each chapter introduces us to a new person/family touched by violence (either losing a family member to violence or having a family member commit violence or committing violence themselves and trying to come to terms with what they've done) though there are a few people who have several chapters devoted to their stories (again dealing with violence that they've witnessed, experienced, or committed).Kotlowitz writes with powerful prose, really showing the humanity of these people and the very challenging lives they lead and often horrific experiences they, well, experiences. Some people might say Kotlowitz is making excuses for bad behavior, but I think he is really showing the societal factors that surround people. So many children randomly killed, so many children/young people killing or hurting others, so many petty squabbles escalating into death. Kotlowitz shows how people struggle with being defined or stereotyped as gangbangers or drug dealers--the assumptions mothers deal with when a child is killed that "he must have been in a gang or dealing drugs." Sometimes they were, sometimes not. Either way the person gone was still a person.Though some of the people profiled make it, there aren't many happy endings in the book. Some seem promising. Some are very sad. It just felt like a gut punch to me, reading about the things people live with and through. I can't imagine having the strength to endure. Just an excellent book. It would be hard to read this and still dismiss Chicago's violence as just faceless black on black crime (or whatever talking point it is today) that "those people" need to deal with (or as a justification to treat them all like animals and criminals.) These are people struggling with poverty, economic depression in their neighborhoods, mass incarceration, death, and still most manage to keep on living, despite the loss and sadness. I can't recommend it enough.

Difficult book to review because Alex Kotlowitz is an amazing reporter of urban life and he once again brings empathy and closeness to American cities...but I never quite connected with it. I have read "There Are No Children Here," and that's a classic of the type.Maybe it's empathy overload, or just being so depressed by it all, but I felt like this could have been a 20K magazine article and accomplished the same thing. Here, I just felt overwhelmed and sad. I put it aside and then didn't come back to it for days, and found myself skimming and forgetting where I was. So that's all the downside. The "up" is that these are powerful, meaningful stories of people in dire situations - and many of them made bad choices and don't deserve much sympathy. But, I can't help but feel shame and regret for how this country has let all this happen without ever coming up with even a tepid effort at a solution. This is a powerful book despite my personal disconnect.

The victims of crime aren't the only victims of "the system".In his years of documenting "inner city" Chicago, Alex Kotlowitz has met many people. Here he chronicles the summer of 2013 by ticking off the days, with an account of the life of one individual or family, mostly colored by their experiences with the criminal justice system and with gang culture.Although the events described are more than five years past, anyone without their own experience with poverty or helping those in poverty would do well to read "An American Summer". Life in the "inner city" can be toxic, and anyone who votes should be thinking about how our government often rewards prosecutors and others who punish some of the victims and how, if this treatment leads to hopelessness and recidivism, we're not even reducing crime as a result.

Bought for my husband who works a lot and travels entirely too much. Everything you need for daily prayer without having to dig through CBP for something appropriate and book is very thin making it super compact for travel. Hardly takes up any space at all but a pocket sized version would be nice. I think it is a nice collection of devotions for someone looking to bring more daily prayer into their lives, people who can't seem to find time to slow down, and students. We've been using it for our daily family devotionals with our middle school aged child.

This has been a wonderful resource for morning prayer and meditation after my time in the Word. I also use the Book of Common Prayer on days when I do not have to work. This is a wonderful alternative when my time is limited, but I still want to have meaningful, and contemplative prayer.

This is the author of the year for 4th graders in Yonkers Public schools. I purchased the book and have it on my kindle. I always found Teddy Roosevelt to be a favorite of mine. Having my daughter read or shared reading I find Teddy Roosevelt's life to be interesting. I think I would like to read more about him. It's an interesting book about Teddy having Asthma, his love for his father. His bird collection and countless other things that the book has brought to light. I think your children will enjoy this book.

Bought several Teddy Roosevelt books for my son's 5th grade research project. This was his favorite. It was well written with a lot of information that he could use. He told me it was the best out of the 4 or 5 I bought. I read part of it and it was easy to read and enough detail that you could really learn from it but not too hard for using for kids.

My 10 year old son read this book when assigned to write a paper about Teddy Roosevelt. It is a great book for kids as it touches on some aspects of his life that are interesting and relevant to kids, not just the more commonly known aspects of his life. It is a quick read that kept his interest. I read the book with him and found it informative and factually accurate from what I could tell. It really brought this amazing man to life.

Great book, recommend for anyone who loves history.

Loved it. A great novel for high school students to read in History.

Very good children's book on the life of Teddy Roosevelt. Jean Fritz is one of our favorite authors.

Very enjoyable and breezy story of the full life of Theodore Roosevelt. We read this as a family, while touring our national parks and so enjoyed connecting with his love of nature.

Great book to teach young children about bullying!

This book will have you rolling your eyes...and laughing. And it's all true! John Ford is a beloved and respected local icon who knows how to tell a rollicking, good tale. It was so brilliant of him to take notes of his exploits during his many years as a Maine Game Warden. Each short story is better than the last.As a former Maine county dispatcher in the 80's, I had the great pleasure of getting to know Game Warden John Ford. He knows people and respects them. And they respect him...(no matter how many times he may have placed them in custody.)Enjoy this talented man's storytelling, share it with your friends, then get his second book! (A third is in the works!)

I really enjoyed this book, the author could laugh at himself as well as others. Great stories that was fun to read.

First bought this book as a gift for someone else while on vacation. It was recommeded by an owner of a small bookstore in Maine who said "you'd get a kick out of it." We skimmed the pages and liked the contents so much I ordered a copy on Amazon for ourselves. It arrived earlier than expected and was cheaper than at the bookstore. It was appealing to my boyfriend who doesn't read much, but liked this one. I don't really have a certain style of books that I am into, as long as I can get into it, I'll read it, and this one def grabbed my attention just skimming the pages

what can be said about this book... unbelievable, hilarious, touching in places. well written accounts of life as a maine game warden, and if my memory is close to right, mostly honest too. i have known the author and some of the people he has written about in this book, and i can promise you that you will never find a better book unless its volume two. he hinted at a book signing that he might write more, i'll buy them quick as the come out.

If you enjoy sitting around at work or home listening to some older family member or co-worker tell you stories, then buy this. I spent many years in Albion, Maine, and while I may have passed by John Ford I never actually met him. But his tales bring alive a part of the nation that is unfortunately fading: the person who takes time to know and understand his world, to listen to people good and bad, and who thinks before he acts. Even if he's pranking his boss.

I read this book because I live in the Northeast and know some of the wardens around here. Have read a couple of other books, but this was by far the better look at the real life of a warden. I liked his less formal style of writing and he told stories about what really happens in the wild -- no whining about supervisors and the "tough" life and politics. It was like sitting by the fire listening to him tell about things that had happened in his life.

This is a book that you will have to get and read to fully understand, you will never be sorry to take time to read and get your own feelings and not some one else's. So please don't waste time and get this book

The humor aspect of this book may be a bit oversold... while I found myself amused and occasionally chuckling, I didn't experience any "belly laughs." That, however, is not as much a criticism of the book as it is of the publisher's description. For those interested in the "Maine Outdoors," law enforcement, and Maine in general this will be an enjoyable read.

Here, finally, is this generation’s Neuromancer.”—Will Lavender, New York Times bestselling author of Dominance“I really, really loved READY PLAYER ONE…Cline expertly mines a copious vein of 1980s pop culture, catapulting the reader on a light-speed adventure in an advanced but backward-looking future.”— Daniel H. Thing about writing a novel like this as one's debut effort is that, from here on out, there's nowhere to go but down. To wit, Armada. Ernie Cline's Ready Player One impacted me the same way that Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games did. It's compulsive reading. Cline spins his dystopian quest adventure with supreme vitality and brio and unabashed adoration of all things nerdy. Cyberpunk collides with pop culture nostalgia, and how could you not get nerd out about a book that celebrates iconic elements of the 1980s? I mean, Family Ties is referenced! Oingo Boingo gets a mention. Here comes the plot set-up, and maybe a ***SPOILER ALERT*** now.The year is 2044, and the global population endures its fourth decade of economic collapse. Huzzah. In a world of fading prospects and rapidly dwindling natural resources, everyone's favorite pastime is the Oasis, a massive, all-inclusive multiplayer online game that had metamorphosed into a globally networked virtual reality universe what's now habitually accessed by nearly everyone on the planet. The Oasis has become such a panoptic entity, it's become synonymous with the Internet. In the Oasis, kids attend virtual school, business offices can purchase virtual landscape to promote their wares, virtual concerts are staged. Who wouldn't prefer this utopian cyberspace over bleak reality? When they can look for James Halliday's fabled Easter egg, nestled somewhere in the vastness of Oasis?Eccentric genius video game designer - and creator of Oasis - James Halliday, before dying, recorded a video in which he challenges all comers to seek out his hidden treasure, to first unearth and then figure out the clues he'd embedded in the fabric of his Oasis program. His Easter egg, when found, conveys untold riches and power and unfettered administrative control over the Oasis. Overnight, the hunt for Halliday's treasure became the new global recreation. Halliday's addiction with 1980s pop culture was well documented, and so, too, in their feverish pursuit did these Easter egg hunters - nicknamed "gunters" - immerse themselves in Halliday's obsession, triggering a global revival of 1980s culture. But years and years would elapse before the elusive first clue would surface. Meanwhile, the gunters developed into figures of ridicule. In the slums of Oklahoma City, in the Stacks - a decaying community in which run-down trailer homes are stacked on top of each other - 18-year-old orphan Wade Watts ekes out a miserable existence. Reclusive and anti-social, Wade is a low-level but dedicated gunter, a walking talking encyclopedia of vintage 1980s facts and trivia. He realizes that his only hope for a better life is to win the game. And so he perseveres when so many have given up. And, even though he's only a self-declared "third level wimp," he works out the location of the first clue. It's a life-changing thing. The virtual scoreboard allows everyone to track his and other competitors' progress. Wade - or, rather, his avatar Parzival - becomes an instant worldwide celebrity - making him the target of fellow gunters and groupies and the media and, worse, of sinister corporations hungry to seize control of the Oasis. In his quest for Halliday's holy grail, Wade Watts - alliteratively named by his comic book-reading father - must call on every bit of his tech savvy and knowledge of 1980s culture to outwit his competitors and enemies. He is an awesome character that boasts impressive measures of pluck and resourcefulness and audacity in the face of frightening odds. And Wade Watts only becomes more awesome once he's compelled to venture out into the real world for survival's sake.If the cyberpunk yarns of William Gibson and Neal Stephenson tend to intimidate you, be at ease with Ready Player One. Ernie Cline has crafted an immensely accessible story. He makes you swim in nostalgia. I'm not a 1980s buff, but I'm an old cat who actually lived his childhood thru the '80s, and it is so much fun trying to catch all of Cline's references. Ready Player One is a well-told, richly realized, and incredibly satisfying adventure, one populated by appealing characters. There's even a sweet love story. Wade engages in an online flirtation with a talented fellow gunter named Art3mis, and so we get a peek into Wade's gnawing doubts as to what the person beneath the Art3mis avatar is really like (and even what she really looks like). But that's just misdirection. It's another character who drops the startling reveal."Unputdownable" isn't a real word, yet it's the perfect adjective for this book. I think that everyone, at some level, has a grain of geekness in them. If you've ever envisioned scenes of your favorite cartoons or animes interacting, if you've once loved a movie so much that you've memorized entire passages of its dialogue, or been influenced by a rock song to the extent that you'd picked up a guitar to learn the chords... Ernie Cline revives these feelings. Ready Player One moves like a locomotive, and there are scenes in it that will absolutely explode your nerdy brain. Ready Player One was a New York Times Bestseller. It's soon to be a blockbuster motion picture what's directed by Steven Spielberg, and, self-deprecating guy that he is, good luck to him trying to tamp down on the book's references to his movies. I'm hyped for the movie. But the book came first, and the book will have an even more special place in my nerd heart. It's easily in my top five favorite reads ever. Ready Player One, yeah, an immersive, imaginative, childhood-mining, unputdownable read. Armada, not so much.

Reads like it was written by a high-school student. And to the people that think that's because it's POV: ALL of his writing is like that. Everything that the protagonist needs to happen, happens fine and everything works out because he is the chosen one of some rich nerd's world. It's the worst kind of wish fulfillment. I hate the term Mary-Sue but that's what this book is about.

I got this after seeing the movie and hearing from a few friends about how different the book is. My two main points after reading this book in 3 days:1. Love the 80's pop culture references integrated into the story. No book I've ever read has ever gone this deep into 80's game, movie, TV, music references. The writer is obviously a true 80's fanatic and geek. No doubt about that, this guy has lived it and did his homework.2. The main character is completely unlikable. He never arcs or changes, even at the end (finding 'love' is not a character change). Honestly, I've never read a book where the main character is just a complete and utter unlikeable character even to the end. You never really want this jerk to succeed. His inner workings and thoughts are as just about as bad as the main villain.Conclusion-Steven Spielberg did a brilliant job taking the meat of this story and actually making the primarily character LIKEABLE because the writer was just down right horrible at it. If the filmmakers had followed the book, no doubt it wouldn't have been successful. I did enjoy the 80's references, but too bad the main character was unlikable.

I can hardly understand the allure of this novel. Or how it managed to gain such popularity. Feels like its written for a fourteen year old, which is in such contrast to the age group who would either understand or have experienced anything that happens in this book... those of us in our late thirties, early forties. It read like a list of games and game explanations, with zero character development. I never finished... because I really didn't care about any of the characters in the book or what the outcome would be. I often found myself nodding off, chapter after chapter. It's a poor write... and a poorer read.

Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings as a 'myth for the machine age.' I think RP1 is an imaginative fairy tale for the online-gamer / virtual reality age. And the picture isn't pretty. I'm not talking about the cliche'd 'environmental apocalypse' of the outside world that the gamers actually live in, but the way that VR *is* their reality, and, to the characters, and in a very truthful way, the only reality that matters. That disturbing aspect of Cline's novel is imaginatively and entertainingly written. The first third of the novel is a marvel. I'd give it ten stars. The second two-thirds, like The Martian in many ways, is a bit repetitive and predictable in a TV-series sort of way.The novel is worthy and well-written, and the fairy tale aspect is touching. You end up rooting for the heroes and heroine, and even get a small glimpse into the motivations and heart of the villain (though I think he could have been much better presented, a la J. K. Rowling's villains). All in all, a highly enjoyable book. The best take I've read on VR and online gaming. Plus it's lots of fun!
