Summary:           A family trip takes a deadly turn when Miranda's car is deliberately run off the road. Her young daughter is shaken, her husband badly hurt, and there's no help in sight. Miranda must move forward, climbing a mountainside in search of help. Her husband's parting words: "Be careful who you trust." What exactly has he gotten them into??? Dodging killers and running on fumes, can the family make it out alive? My thoughts:         Holy heck, what a ride! Buckle up and make sure to allow for a lot of suspension of disbelief. While there is a lot going on that, let's face it, would never really happen... isn't it that way with most action/ thrillers? This one may be a bit over the top, but it was fun, interesting, and, as promised, a lightning-fast read. The story was really perfect for a bookshot.           I enjoyed the main characters, Miranda, Aaron and little Sierra. I liked the dynamic between the three.  The premise caught my attention right away, and I was really interested. It quickly became a favorite of mine. Five Stars!            On the adult content scale, I give it a four. There is some language and violence, but I have honestly read worse in a YA novel that I still handed to my 13 year old niece.

I have NEVER read a boring book from James Patterson and this one does not disappoint. I love all his books. He knows how to grab you and keep your interest. Keep 'em coming.

A high speed chase, a car accident, a secret hidden away from the family, and a fight for survival! Not knowing why someone was out to kill her, Miranda fights for her survival, doing things she never thought she was capable of in order to save her husband and daughter. At the end, the family secret is revealed, and her husband and she take down the entire operation, getting the justice they deserve.

This was an intriguing story. It was good to read about a woman so strong but hard to believe. She was so much stronger than I could have imagined. Well played story. Hope there are truly people who are hero's for the rest of us.

Fast moving book. If I was ever in her situation I can only hope I have the strength to hold on like she did to save her family

What a movie this would make! Drama, intrigue, suspense, it has it all and more, the absolute power of love, trust and faith in your family but also in yourself. What more could you ask for - nothing.

This book grabbed me at the first page and I was of off! Page after page, I had to keep reading. I literally love James Patterson and this was no exception!Recommended for anyone who likes a fast paced story with unforgettable charactets.

I have a large collection of books. This is just another addition. I haven't read it yet, but this author has always had great stories. This one should be just as good. That's why I bought it.

I read this while getting my Masters in Computer Science, decades ago, and found it very current and helpful. Now it might still be interesting, but would be highly dated, as 25% of the information in that industry changes every year. Back then, it would have rated 5 stars. Now, maybe 3 for anyone other than a historian, so averaged it to 4. Well written and enjoyable; just about stuff you can't even buy any more, and wouldn't want to if you could.

This book is a non-fiction account of the development of a mini-computer in the 1980s. The book begins by describing the background: Data General, a computer company, has been recently leapfrogged by a competitor who put out a 32-bit mini computer system over their 16-bit system. To keep up with their major competitor (DEC), the company begins a development project for their own 32-bit mini computer. The company HQ is based in Massachusetts. What complicates matters is that the CEO establishes a new R&D center in North Carolina where he hopes the new 32-bit mini computer will be built. The new R&D center however, creates a major rift between the engineers who stayed in Massachusetts and the ones who work in North Carolina - as both groups want to be in charge of development. A major feud begins, but basically the group in North Carolina wins and gets to build the new 32-bit system. However, the story begins in Massachusetts....Tom West, an engineering manager in Massachusetts, manages to convince the management that it would be worthwhile to have a 'back-up' 32-bit computer system, that was perhaps backwards compatible with their old 16-bit systems. It would be a sort of 'insurance' so to speak in case development efforts in North Carolina took too long. With a handful of experienced engineers as team leaders, he recruits essentially fresh college graduates and works the hell out of them to create a rival 32-bit computer system.Over the course of the book, it becomes apparent that the North Carolina facility - despite having more resources, money, engineers, etc. - will not in fact be able to launch their product in a timely fashion. West's team of new recruits really does need to release their product in order for the company to continue competing in the mini-computer market. The book is not written so much on the technical details of the project, but rather is more of a 'documentary' of the experience of being on the product development team. The level of detail this book captures, and at each level (from West's perspective, the perspective of a number of the fresh college graduates, his experienced Team Leaders who speculated on West's motives in driving everyone so hard, the background situation of the company and management) is perfect.Looking back historically, one could easily just conclude that the Massachusetts team succeeded for all sorts of technical reasons. But there were a lot of interesting human reasons for why the project succeeded. For one, the project should have never been started in Massachusetts in the first place. The company management did not seem to have any clear idea of what to put their engineers to work on (or even really know what they were working on) and a wily manager was able to sneak the project by, masquerading it as something else.As engineer on a product development team for a robotic system, I can 100% relate to this book. The ridiculous management decisions, the company politics, engineers working insane hours on esoteric problems, the strange culture of engineers, the product launch and general lack of appreciation for the engineer's work afterwards - it's amazingly well captured in this book, and I was surprised at how my current company and previous company experiences relate so strongly to the product development described here. What I liked most about it, was that a lot of the decisions made by West, the company, etc were highly irrational, if you looked at them from the company perspective. The company SHOULD have only had one group working on the development project. West SHOULD have explained to his team the importance of what they were working on and perhaps been more involved on the day to day decisions of the project, just as the VP of Engineering SHOULD have been more cognizant of what West's entire team was up to. (The author writes about 'mushroom management' in the book - keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em *edited by Amazon Censors*). But in reality, for often political reasons, feuds, the strange driven personality of a particular manager, the strange management practices of the CEO, all of these mistakes get made, and yet a 32-bit mini computer gets built and saves the company in the end anyway. It's a great book because it is all true.I am not sure how interesting this would be for someone that doesn't work in product development, but for me, I see this mistakes made in my company every day. It's amazing how much individual personalities, and strange coincidences can drive a project. An additional tidbit, Wired magazine did a follow up with all of the engineers years after this book was written:"[...]"Google 'O, Engineers!', 'Soul of a New Machine, Wired' in case Amazon gets rid of the link.A great book.

This book should be on the desk of every manager of technical projects in the US. More than any other work in history, it shows how innovation occurs, and how a few near-genius and hard-working individuals can get things done. It also shows modern organizational theory to be badly flawed, and that the much vaunted group-dynamics and teamwork cannot replace a few bright minds who are dedicated to inventing a new product. The Apple Computer is an example of the concept I'm describing: Steve Wozniac invented the Apple in his garage, and Steve Jobs marketed it. Amazing, isn't it -- one man essentially created the personal computer all by himself. All alone, not even with a team made of diverse talents and representing various viewpoints. All they do is create kludges that require incessant maintenance and updates. Sound familiar?

I read this Pol based on few recommendations, it took me a while to finish it though. I find certain part of the book to detailed and boring eventually I had to put effort t finish it all. I cannot say it is bad written, on the contrary it reads well however the subject and the way to tell the story is not my way. Overall a classical book strongly recommended if you are a manager as it explains how to build a group of achiever and potentially shows the aftermath of great success.

A bunch of people haphazardly come together to build a new computer and with trust from their managers and earnest desire to excel in their craft manage to bring the damn thing to life.I personally found this relatable on so many levels; not only the pastiche of people working on the project but also the range of company politics and bickering. This book punched me in the stomach purely from the fact that the project's leader, Tom West, blatantly describes the power of trust to lead teams. An easy 10/10 recommendation from me to any technical person who will inevitably hit some kind of existential crisis in their career and find this book enlightening as it did for me.

I liked this book. The development of the MV/8000 was taking place about the time I was becoming involved in computers, and by the time it hit the market I was a field service engineer working on IBM mainframes, and playing around with a PDP-11 when I could. It was very interesting to read the account of how the hardware and microcode were developed, especially in light of the training I had in essentially similar microcoded machines around the same time frame. On the other hand, even after having read the entire book I still don't really get the feeling I understand what made a couple of the central players tick. Maybe the author never really figured it out either. Anyway, it's well written and well worth reading, especially if you can relate to the way things were "way back" at the tail end of the 70s and the early 80s.

Very good resource for Parents to address/educate the educators of your child's school. His books are all great. My only concern with this book is that it doesn't have many strategies for high schoolers. This book is geared more towards elementary and middle school age children.

The book is a quick read, in a nutshell type of book. I like that it stresses these students need accommodations for the long term. My disappointment in the book is it states evidence based in the title and does not source in the text what study can be drawn from to support the technique. It does give a reference page in the back but it is not cross referenced in the text. Also, I could not find a study to support the time theory. I see they don't experience time the same as typical kids through experience and I was excited to see this in the text thinking, again by the title, that I would have evidence to support the theory but no. None of the studies referenced appeared to explore that aspect. I would have given it a 3 star for the evidence based but it was more than OK for easy to use content.

The book did have some great tips but I was a little disappointed at how small the book was for the price.I have loved all of the Russell Barkley books and his videos so my hopes were high for this book. I bought it for me to read since my kindergartener has recently diagnosed with ADHD and was having trouble in school. Many of the strategies in the book were already in place in the school. I ended up giving my copy to our school so they could use it.

As a sufferer of ADHD myself, a parent of ADHD children and a teacher and advocate of ADHD students, I cannot praise Dr. Barkely's work enough. There is a LOT of rubbish printed out there about this disorder, often made to look factual when it isn't. If you want real information and strategies that really work to support children with ADHD, then Dr. Barkley's work should be the first and last place you look.

Precise and very relevant. An excellent resource.

Invaluable practical guidelines supported clear theoretical explanations

Easy to understand, good recommendations for teachers

A good 'first' book for teachers just learning about managing ADHD.

Review

“…[U]nimaginably detailed, raw, minute-by-minute, illuminating, and just plain gripping. It's also the most extraordinary testament--to honesty, love, pain, doubt, and resilience.… This book is nothing less than a public service. I beseech you to read it.” – Bruce Feiller “As people read Sue’s memoir, what they will find is that her book is honest, and her pain genuine.  Her story may be uncomfortable to read, but it will raise awareness about brain health and the importance of early identification and intervention to maintain it.  If people listen to her – to all that she has experienced, and to how this has changed her – they will be quicker to respond to depression in young people, to the suicidal thinking that can accompany it, and to the rage that can build almost unnoticed in young people when the people who truly and completely love and care for them are distracted by other challenges in life.” —Paul Gionfriddo, President and CEO of Mental Health America “Required reading for all parents of adolescents...soul-piercingly honest, written with bravery and intelligence... A book of nobility and importance.” –The Times  “Reading this book as a critic is hard; reading it as a parent is devastating….I imagine snippets of my own young children in Dylan Klebold, shades of my parenting in Sue and Tom.  I suspect that many families will find their own parallels….This book’s insights are painful and necessary and its contradictions inevitable.” —Carlos Lozada, The Washington Post  “[Sue Klebold’s book] reads as if she had written it under oath, while trying to answer, honestly and completely, an urgent question: What could a parent have done to prevent this tragedy?… She earns our pity, our empathy and, often, our admiration; and yet the book’s ultimate purpose is to serve as a cautionary tale, not an exoneration.” —The New York Times Book Review “[T]he parenting book everyone should read.” —Parents.com  “I believe Sue Klebold.  So will you.” —LA Times “At times her story is so chilling you want to turn away, but Klebold’s compassion and honesty –and realization that parents and institutions must work to discover kids’ hidden suffering-will keep you riveted.” —People.com “This book which can be tough to read in places is an important one. It helps us arrive at a new understanding of how Columbine happened and, in the process, may help avert other tragedies.” Rated: A. —Entertainment Weekly

My mom used to get upset with me because I disregarded what was going on in the world, as far as news goes. Columbine was the first news story that gripped me to the point of obsession. I asked all the questions every other person was asking, and made assumptions I had no right to make. That changed when I read Susan's essay, I Will Never Know Why. It, to me, is the single most important essay ever written, and it changed me. Never, since reading that essay, have I ever blamed parents for their child's behavior, especially kids in their teen years. I've seen my own child act out in ways that she certainly didn't learn from her father and I, and I felt deception like I never felt it before. And stupid. I felt stupid that a teen could pull the wool over my eyes. Thanks to Susan, I learned years ago that it is foolish to think I know my child.I waited for this book to drop on my Kindle last night, and read it until I finished it. I did have to take breaks, because she is raw and honest, and as a mother, this is a welcomed relief, but also suffocating. I can only conclude that not only is this book a reflection of Susan's most personal thoughts, but a reflection of myself and all the mistakes I've made, and the signs I've overlooked as a parent. It's suffocating to realize my own failures, simply put.Every year, right after New Year's, I share Susan's essay on my FB page in hopes of enlightening others. Susan, I continue to send you strength, courage and clarity. Thank you for being you. From one mother to another, I give you permission to mourn your son. You can simultaneously have grief for all the victims and your son, because the heart can hold multiple emotions at once. I wish you well.

I was 14 when the Columbine massacre occurred. I can still vividly remember all of the news channels here in Minnesota constantly reporting on it. I remember this event so well because I quickly learned that they listened to the same music I liked, and so many talk show hosts blaming Rammstein and Marilyn Manson was just absurd to me. I remember reports that they had been bullied, and I was definitely bullied too. I saw similarities between myself and them and yet I couldn't understand why they did such a thing.Sue explains her thoughts, feelings, and actions thoroughly and I completely understand now why Eric and Dylan could have thought such a thing would help them. Mental illnesses are very cruel, and they victimize thousands, if not more, every year.I never blamed Sue nor any of the other parents for what Dylan and Eric did. I was 14, and I knew despite my unhealthy upbringing that my decisions were only mine to own. I feel terrible for what the Klebolds and Harrises went through. They were victims too, but in the most unfathomable and misunderstood way. THANK YOU SUE, for sharing your story, and sharing a little of Dylan with the world. You are not a monster for loving your son.

I've always wanted to hear from the parents of the Columbine shooters exactly what their experience was like. This book goes into great detail about Dylan's life growing up in Littleton leading up to the massacre. I was completely engrossed to hear from Sue Klebold what it was like to unwittingly raise a killer. One of the most overlooked aspects of the Columbine tragedy that this book illuminated for me is the fact that Eric went to the school that day to kill while Dylan went there to die.Similar to the point that Dave Cullen makes in his great book "Columbine" though the boys ultimately committed murder at the school together what got them to that terrible conclusion was quite different. The most telling thing that I got from this book was that to his mother Dylan seemed like a perfectly normal teenager. He did not display any signs that would, for most parents, raise any red flags. He was involved, he had friends, he held jobs, he participated in activities at school, and his grades were good. I think for most parents we cling to the notion that those boy’s parents had to know that something was terribly wrong with their sons. This thinking helps us believe that what Dylan and Eric did could never happen with anyone we know. The terrible realization came when I started to understand that what Dylan did could happen to anybody's child. When we put Dylan Klebold into the safe little box where he was an evil person to the core it makes us feel safer because our own child could never do something like what he did, could they? Much like other famous tragedies that ended in death Columbine is easier to deal with when we can easily explain what happened and why it happened. The chilling thing that I've come to realize is that what happened on April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School has the potential to happen practically anywhere. The book was at times very repetitive and sometimes I did feel like Sue was trying to drive home the fact that she was an amazing parent to Dylan. Her liberal ideals did get on my nerves at times, just because they are very different from my own, but I can still appreciate her views without agreeing with them. At one place in particular in the book she tells us about an incident only days before the shootings that I have a really hard time believing is true. It feels more like she included this story to make herself look better. On the other hand, if she is telling the truth, then Dylan was truly unbelievably manipulative and cruel in the way he lied to his mother that morning. Maybe it's just that it is hard to believe that a person could be so cold and deceptive.Ultimately this book is a much needed chapter in the Columbine tragedy. The suicide of Dylan Klebold is so tragic because he was a teenager on the brink of graduation, he already had a college picked out and a dorm room paid for, he had a potentially bright future working with computers, and a family who loved him dearly. How could this boy make the horrific decision to kill himself and take innocent lives in the process? That is the question that will haunt me for years.

8 On Monday, March 25, Lee came walking up Neely Street carrying a long package wrapped in brown paper. Peering through a tiny crack in the curtains, I could see the words REGISTERED and INSURED stamped on it in big red letters. For the first time I thought he seemed furtive and nervous, actually looking around at his exterior surroundings instead of at the spooky furniture deep in his head. I knew what was in the package: a 6.5mm Carcano rifle—also known as a Mannlicher-Carcano—complete with scope, purchased from Klein’s Sporting Goods in Chicago. Five minutes after he climbed the outside stairs to the second floor, the gun Lee would use to change history was in a closet above my head. Marina took the famous pictures of him holding it just outside my living room window six days later, but I didn’t see it. That was a Sunday, and I was in Jodie. As the tenth grew closer, those weekends with Sadie had become the most important, the dearest, things in my life. 9 I came awake with a jerk, hearing someone mutter “Still not too late” under his breath. I realized it was me and shut up. Sadie murmured some thick protest and turned over in bed. The familiar squeak of the springs locked me in place and time: the Candlewood Bungalows, April 5, 1963. I fumbled my watch from the nightstand and peered at the luminous numbers. It was quarter past two in the morning, which meant it was actually the sixth of April. Still not too late. Not too late for what? To back off, to let well enough alone? Or bad enough, come to that? The idea of backing off was attractive, God knew. If I went ahead and things went wrong, this could be my last night with Sadie. Ever. Even if you do have to kill him, you don’t have to do it right away. True enough. Oswald was going to relocate to New Orleans for awhile after the attempt on the general’s life—another shitty apartment, one I’d already visited—but not for two weeks. That would give me plenty of time to stop his clock. But I sensed it would be a mistake to wait very long. I might find reasons to keep on waiting. The best one was beside me in this bed: long, lovely, and smoothly naked. Maybe she was just another trap laid by the obdurate past, but that didn’t matter, because I loved her. And I could envision a scenario—all too clearly—where I’d have to run after killing Oswald. Run where? Back to Maine, of course. Hoping I could stay ahead of the cops just long enough to get to the rabbit-hole and escape into a future where Sadie Dunhill would be . . . well . . . about eighty years old. If she were alive at all. Given her cigarette habit, that would be like rolling six the hard way. I got up and went to the window. Only a few of the bungalows were occupied on this early-spring weekend. There was a mud- or manure-splattered pickup truck with a trailer full of what looked like farm implements behind it. An Indian motorcycle with a sidecar. A couple of station wagons. And a two-tone Plymouth Fury. The moon was sliding in and out of thin clouds and it wasn’t possible to make out the color of the car’s lower half by that stuttery light, but I was pretty sure I knew what it was, anyway. I pulled on my pants, undershirt, and shoes. Then I slipped out of the cabin and walked across the courtyard. The chilly air bit at my bed-warm skin, but I barely felt it. Yes, the car was a Fury, and yes, it was white over red, but this one wasn’t from Maine or Arkansas; the plate was Oklahoma, and the decal in the rear window read GO, SOONERS. I peeked in and saw a scatter of textbooks. Some student, maybe headed south to visit his folks on spring break. Or a couple of horny teachers taking advantage of the Candlewood’s liberal guest policy. Just another not-quite-on-key chime as the past harmonized with itself. I touched the trunk, as I had back in Lisbon Falls, then returned to the bungalow. Sadie had pushed the sheet down to her waist, and when I came in, the draft of cool air woke her up. She sat, holding the sheet over her breasts, then let it drop when she saw it was me. “Can’t sleep, honey?” “I had a bad dream and went out for some air.” “What was it?” I unbuttoned my jeans, kicked off my loafers. “Can’t remember.” “Try. My mother always used to say if you tell your dreams, they won’t come true.” I got into bed with her wearing nothing but my undershirt. “My mother used to say if you kiss your honey, they won’t come true.” “Did she actually say that?” “No.” “Well,” she said thoughtfully, “it sounds possible. Let’s try it.” We tried it. One thing led to another. 10 Afterward, she lit a cigarette. I lay watching the smoke drift up and turn blue in the occasional moonlight coming through the half-drawn curtains. I’d never leave the curtains that way at Neely Street, I thought. At Neely Street, in my other life, I’m always alone but still careful to close them all the way. Except when I’m peeking, that is. Lurking. Just then I didn’t like myself very much. “George?” I sighed. “That’s not my name.” “I know.” I looked at her. She inhaled deeply, enjoying her cigarette guiltlessly, as people do in the Land of Ago. “I don’t have any inside information, if that’s what you’re thinking. But it stands to reason. The rest of your past is made up, after all. And I’m glad. I don’t like George all that much. It’s kind of . . . what’s that word you use sometimes? . . . kind of dorky.” “How does Jake suit you?” “As in Jacob?” “Yes.” “I like it.” She turned to me. “In the Bible, Jacob wrestled an angel. And you’re wrestling, too. Aren’t you?” “I suppose I am, but not with an angel.” Although Lee Oswald didn’t make much of a devil, either. I liked George de Mohren--schildt better for the devil role. In the Bible, Satan’s a tempter who makes the offer and then stands aside. I hoped de Mohrenschildt was like that. Sadie snubbed her cigarette. Her voice was calm, but her eyes were dark. “Are you going to be hurt?” “I don’t know.” “Are you going away? Because if you have to go away, I’m not sure I can stand it. I would have died before I said it when I was there, but Reno was a nightmare. Losing you for good . . .” She shook her head slowly. “No, I’m not sure I could stand that.” “I want to marry you,” I said. “My God,” she said softly. “Just when I’m ready to say it’ll never happen, Jake-alias-George says right now.” “Not right now, but if the next week goes the way I hope it does . . . will you?” “Of course. But I do have to ask one teensy question.” “Am I single? Legally single? Is that what you want to know?” She nodded. “I am,” I said. She let out a comic sigh and grinned like a kid. Then she sobered. “Can I help you? Let me help you.” The thought turned me cold, and she must have seen it. Her lower lip crept into her mouth. She bit down on it with her teeth. “That bad, then,” she said musingly. “Let’s put it this way: I’m currently close to a big machine full of sharp teeth, and it’s running full speed. I won’t allow you next to me while I’m monkeying with it.” “When is it?” she asked. “Your . . . I don’t know . . . your date with destiny?” “Still to be determined.” I had a feeling that I’d said too much already, but since I’d come this far, I decided to go a little farther. “Something’s going to happen this Wednesday night. Something I have to witness. Then I’ll decide.” “Is there no way I can help you?” “I don’t think so, honey.” “If it turns out I can—” “Thanks,” I said. “I appreciate that. And you really will marry me?” “Now that I know your name is Jake? Of course.”

I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and took my time reading it. I could "hear" Mr. King's "voice" in my head as I read this on my iPad Kindle app. I felt like I was reading something from a friend---as if he had written a personal letter to me--- to give me an understanding of what he went through to become the person he is today. I think that his directives about the "how-to's" and "don't do's" were very practical. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got the feeling that writing classes and clubs are kind of a waste of time. Just write, is what I think he was telling me, I mean, his audience. I will probably read it again. What I got from his personal, real-life-lessons is this: Read a lot. Read good stuff. Write all the time. Find a place and write. Don't share your stuff unless you share it with someone you can trust. Go with your gut. Write all the time (I said that already because he said it or inferred it frequently). Don't use the same adjective over and over. Stick to the point. Don't over-do it on the descriptions. Let your audience see the movie you see in your head, because if you write it well, they will. I am glad this wasn't a "point by point HOW TO WRITE a story or a book" book, because really, writing isn't something you can do easily from a bulleted list. Writing is something you do from your heart, and you keep doing it until it's right and good. And then when that person you trust reads your stuff and offers some criticism, you can take it for what it's worth and use it or not.

I purchased this book because the description stated that it contained all 4 books including Rage. What a disappointment to receive the book and open it to find that it includes only 3 of the 4 books... no Rage! If you are looking to complete your stephen king collection, avoid this copy! Incredibly frustrated buyer!

The main reason I bought this book was that the description said that it included the story "Rage". I was dying to read that, and the other three stories would be a bonus. Well, what a major disappointment to receive the book and find that "Rage" is not included. There are three stories, not four, and I will be returning this book due to false advertising. Very, very disappointed.

Some books I rate with 5 stars just because of my pleasure in the story. These aren't always well-written or creative, or something someone else would like. Then there are those books that are so well-crafted, not just with character development or storytelling but in the writing itself. This is one of those books. I've always given Stephen King credit as the "king of the flashback" and here he gives us some of what he does best, but he also shows again his ability to get inside the head of the character in the present. From making up lyrics to songs sung by a fictional boy band and the brand names of fictional ice cream treats, to details of a Midwestern city that make those of us living in Midwestern cities think ours is the one in the story. I wondered in the beginning of the book if King was making a game in paying homage to himself with hints he dropped to reference some of his previous best sellers, but he played this game for just a short while. There are plenty of other pop-culture references in the minds of the various characters that do well to establish their ages and backgrounds. As the story unwinds after the climactic events, my emotions surprised me. I've cried while reading books before, but not while reading the words of a bureaucratic proclamation!

I have been an on-again, off-again reader of Stephen King’s over the last decade or so (I was more loyal prior to that time) as sometimes I like his stuff and sometimes I don’t. The last one I read was the awful "Under the Dome," which was long, pointless and ultimately just silly, and I wasn’t thinking of reading anything else by him until I read a couple of reviews by Charles de Lint in a recent Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I trust Mr. de Lint’s tastes, so when he praised "Mr. Mercedes" and its follow-up, I figured I’d give them a try. Mr. Mercedes is the nickname given to a man who stole a car (guess what make) and plowed into a group of job seekers standing outside a building waiting for a job fair, killing 8 and wounding many others. Recently retired cop Bill Hodges has been drifting since his retirement, regretting that he didn’t catch certain bad guys, including Mr. Mercedes, but when he receives a letter purporting to be from the villain, instead of succumbing to depression as the writer intended, he begins to investigate. And, of course, the investigation just becomes more and more dangerous as he continues to delve into the mystery…. The reader knows who the culprit is from early on in the book, so the appeal is following the cat-and-mouse hunt as the suspense builds. King is as good as he ever was with respect to his characters and plotting, and he’s always great with the gross-out scenes (which here are not too many, thankfully). This turns out to be the first book in a trilogy, and I’ve already picked up the second, "Finder’s Keepers," with the third due out in mid-2016. Fast-paced popcorn reading, "Mr. Mercedes" just hits the spot; recommended!
