Written by one of the best experts on artillery in the twentieth century, this book looks at infantry guns, mountain guns, field artillery, heavy field artillery, heavy artillery, railway artillery, anti-aircraft artillery, anti-tank artillery, coastal artillery, and recoilless artillery. It also address ammunition (including markings), designations for foreign weapons, as well as other matters. Hogg's writing is clear and informative, and often has a number of surprises for his readers. This is the standard reference on German artillery in the Second World War, and is a must for anyone with any interest in the subject.

I was greatly impressed by this book. I now use it as a reference for any reading I do on World War II.I was saddened not to find "Anzio Annie" (aka Leopold and Robert) referenced as such, but comparing google articles I found it to be the "28cm Kanone 5 in Eisenbahnlafette".I was disappointed to find, as did another reviewer, that mortars and self propelled artillery were not included. Luckily, I had the "German Military Vehicles" catalog to refer to for "Karl" and "Thor".I would have liked a more comprehensive index by popular names of various artillery. More history of the various railroad guns would have been an added attraction.Overall, I do like the book. With other reference books and google, it adds to my library.

Well researched, an encyclopedia on the subject. Too bad the book wasn't printed on coated paper. The photos aren't what one would hope for or expect. But the internet can supplement that problem.

Arrived in a timely manner. In excellent condition. My boyfriend was delighted to get it as his Valentine's gift

i agree with all other reviewers here untill the day comes when someone else can come up with a better book i decidedly for see this book being around for a long long time.buy them while they are still for sale they are very much well worth the money yes this book is missing some things but not by a whole lot i have enjoyed this book very much after getting it into my hands late summer of last year back in 2008.

Very detailed, very accurate as far as I can tell. A best buy for WWII history buffs.

"German Artillery of World War Two" is a very complete and thurough study of the subject. I highly recomend it.

Good book!!!

Review

“Suspenseful. . . . Rollicking. . . . Reads with all the pace and excitement of a movie thriller. . . . The Lost City of Z is at once a biography, a detective story and a wonderfully vivid piece of travel writing that combines Bruce Chatwinesque powers of observation with a Waugh-like sense of the absurd. Mr. Grann treats us to a harrowing reconstruction of Fawcett’s forays into the Amazonian jungle, as well as an evocative rendering of the vanished age of exploration.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times “Breathtaking. . . . Grann brings Fawcett’s remarkable story to a beautifully written, perfectly paced fruition. . . . Any writer who can breathe life into letters written by scientists in the early 1900s deserves more than a hat tip.”—The Los Angeles Times  “Brilliant. . . . Impressively researched and skillfully crafted. . . . Grann makes abundantly clear in this fascinating, epic story of exploration and obsession, [that] the lethal attraction of the Amazon mystery remains strong.”—The Boston Globe “A smart biographical page-turner.”—USA Today “Grann escapes death and tracks down Z, giving the reader the kind of Indiana Jones kicks best experienced vicariously.”—Details “A riveting, exciting and thoroughly compelling tale of adventure.”—John Grisham “Thoroughly researched, vividly told. . . . Grann recounts Fawcett’s expeditions with all the pace of a white-knuckle adventure story. . . . A thrill ride from start to finish.”—The Washington Post  “The story of Z goes to the heart of the central questions of our age. In the battle between man and a hostile environment, who wins? A fascinating and brilliant book.”—Malcolm Gladwell “A spellbinding tale that produces fresh surprises around each turn. . . . An amazing story.”—Dallas Morning News “A fascinating yarn that touches on science, history, and some truly obsessive personalities.”—Entertainment Weekly “There is something about Fawcett’s spirit and self-assurance that captivates. . . . To read The Lost City of Z is to feel grateful that Grann himself bothered to set out for the Amazon in search of the bones of an explorer whose body was long ago reclaimed by the jungle.”—Christian Science Monitor “In a hyperconnected and exhaustively charted world, here is a revelation about wildness and the mad desire to plunge into it. . . . Unfathomably riveting. . . . Grann wildly delivers the goods.”—GQ “A blockbuster tale of adventure.”—New York Observer “Marvelous. . . . [Grann] combines a colorful narrative of Fawcett’s early life, military career, jungle treks, theories and even conversations with a biography of an extraordinary man and an overview of the last great and highly competitive age of exploration.”—Bloomberg News “A blood-stirring reading experience.”—The Denver Post “A deeply satisfying revelation. . . . What could be better—obsession, mystery, deadly insects, shrunken heads, suppurating wounds, hostile tribesmen—all for us to savor in our homes, safely before the fire.”—Erik Larson “What makes Mr. Grann’s telling of the story so captivating is that he decides not simply to go off in search of yet more relics of our absent hero—but to go off himself in search of the city that Fawcett was looking for so heroically when he suddenly went AWOL.”—Simon Winchester, The Wall Street Journal “Fast-paced adventure. . . . Grann delights us with the lure of obsession under a canopy of trees.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer “Absorbing and fair-minded. . . . In restoring a life that history has swallowed from general view, and vindicating a crackpot theory, Mr. Grann has also exposed the toll that explorers often took on those who loved or depended on them.”—Richard B. Woodward, The New York Times “An engrossing book, whose protagonist could outmarch Lara Croft and out-think Indiana Jones. . . . It’s almost enough to make you reach for a backpack.” —The Daily Telegraph (London) “A riveting adventure-mystery in the tradition of Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, said to be inspired by Fawcett.” —The Toronto Star “Perfect for armchair travelers and readers with fond childhood memories of books recounting tales of adventure in the dark wild. . . . What [Grann] found should help change how we think about the Amazon. . . . Read it, shiver with delight and thank your lucky stars you’re never going to get as close to a candirú as Fawcett and Grann did. (Look it up on Wikipedia, if you dare.)” —Richmond Times-Dispatch “Thrilling. . . . What a story. . . . The beauty is that as incredible as it is, it’s true.” —Daily News “Outstanding. . . . A powerful narrative, stiff lipped and Victorian at the center, trippy at the edges, as if one of those stern men of Conrad had found himself trapped in a novel by García Márquez.”—Rich Cohen, The New York Times Book Review “Did Grann find the lost city? . . . It’s worth reading every page of this marvelous book to find out.”—Houston Chronicle “Grann is no hard-as-nails explorer, and his self-deprecating personal narrative . . . serves as a comic counterpoint to the superhuman exploits of Fawcett. Grann may not be able to hack the wilderness very well, but as a storyteller he’s first-rate.” —Outside “Grann has an extraordinary sense of pacing, and his scenes of forest adventure are dispatched in passages of swift, arresting simplicity. . . . A splendid, suspenseful book.”—Bookforum “With this riveting work, David Grann emerges on our national landscape as a major new talent. His superb writing style, his skills as a reporter, his masterful use of historical and scientific documents, and his stunning storytelling ability are on full display here, producing an endlessly absorbing tale about a magical subject that captivates from start to finish. This is a terrific book.” —Doris Kearns Goodwin “A thrilling yarn. . . . What [Grann] finds is what makes The Lost City of Z so gratifying, and in the end he, and we along with him, find ourselves stunned by what Percy Fawcett discovered.” —The Oregonian “Grann paints a vivid picture of the final days of trail-blazing, Earth-bound grand exploration, before airplanes and radios began stripping the mystery from the unknown parts of the world.” —The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) “Meticulously researched and spellbinding. . . . Reads like a cross between an Indiana Jones adventure and a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel. . . . Gripping.” —The Ottawa Citizen “Irresistible. . . . At once a biography of Fawcett, a history of the era of exploration, a science book on the nature and ethnography of the Amazon and a thrilling armchair adventure. . . . [It] has everything to fire the imagination: Romance, nostalgia, bravery, monomania, hardship, adventure, science, tragedy, mystery.” —South Florida Sun Sentinel “The Lost City of Z is meticulously researched, riveting and horrifying, guided by a core mystery that seems unimaginable and an author driven into the depths of the jungle by his daring to imagine it.” —Philadelphia City Paper “Absorbing. . . . A wonderful story of a lost age of heroic exploration.” —The Sunday Times (London) “Tantalizing. . . . Grann gives us a glimpse of the vanished age of exploration [as well as] a suspenseful, often very funny account of his own trek as a complete amateur into the ‘green hell’ of the Amazon. . . . Immensely entertaining.” —The Gazette (Montreal) “Thankfully, for those of us who secretly live and breath for the swashbuckling adventure tale, every now and then a book comes along that renews our faith in the epic quest narrative, its ability to inform and enlighten even as it feeds our most primal need for dramatic amusement. [The Lost City of Z] succeeds tremendously in these pursuits.” —The Globe and Mail (Canada)

I purchased and read this book several years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am excited that the movie is coming soon. But, before that, I'm going to read the book again!

I loved reading this book because of its diversity. You get a well rounded history from multiple accounts of the many cursed expeditions into the Amazon. The crazy men who dared to do it (both present and past), violent tribal peoples (though you understand why they're so hostile to foreigners), the nearly impassable Amazon terrain, the odd and bizarre creatures that reside their, and in the end, a plausible archaeologically based theory behind why people thought there was a large rich city once in the Amazon. Like all things, people's imaginations run wild, but the author also brings you back down the earth with the reality of the jungle which left me with the overall conclusion that these grandiose theories of a Lost City of Z were really just grand exaggerations of much more practical evidence of a fairly developed, but long lost, past civilization. Some people criticize the book for only getting to the final expedition at the very end of the book. But I believe this criticism is unwarranted. You can't just jump into the final expedition without getting the backstory and context of the people, place, and time. I feel the author did a marvelous job of jumping around and pacing the book, so that when you get to the final expedition, you're well versed in the context and prepared to understand why things went down the way they did.Fantastic read, and I shall keep this book as a permanent fixture in my collection. Too bad I only got it in paperback... dang.

I found this book interesting in many ways. It was easy to read since it touched many subjects that are familiar to me. The book covers historic facts of the Victorian age and its influence in the world but specially South America and the countries of Bolivia and Brazil whose Amazonian region was and is difficult to explore or study. It is well balanced since the book covers many areas that help understand different points of view of previous times compared to present times. I found answers to questions that come up as you read this book. For instance, to refer to the tribes that populate the Amazonian forests as savages, made me question who is anyone to judge, specially after the atrocities of WWI, described in the book as well as all the inhuman spectacle of WW2. Also, it explains what was happening in the areas related to the fields he got to be involved in like archeology and the discovery of Machu Pichu which may have influenced him.Fawcett’s motivations could have been banal if they were glory or becoming famous but he showed an ethical position not usual in his time which was to approach the indigenous people in a non violent way, trying not to use arms and ordering to drop arms even if danger was felt. He would raise his hands and confront the Indians which gave him good results since he got to be treated as a sort of friend. This respectful behavior, considering the times, was something positive to take in account when trying to define Fawcett's personality which could show his humanity, something to learn from him. Now, consider that Indiana Jones is partly based in the real life of Percy Fawcett and P.F. is one of the characters of one of his movies; however, Indiana Jones had no problem in shooting for entertainment.Having lived in Bolivia and having done some exploration myself I may have a different take to this adventure. To start, one of Fawcett's motivation was as normal as to answer why people climb mountains, the answer is,” because it's there". I have done hiking going from La Paz at 12000 ft. above sea level to about 15000 ft. and then down to the tropics of Yungas which is the start of the Amazonian jungle all along an Inca road which was partly well preserved considering hundreds of years of use. After getting familiar with this subtropical region, it happened that I read The mines of King Salomon and this book, cited in Grann's book as well, inspired me to go farther. My plan was to go to an uncharted area in the forest called Madidi, which is a national park now. My motivation was just to see what no one else has seen. I was able to enlist two university friends who seemed interested but who back down at the last minute. Next year I tried again but I had a sudden back ache problem. Going back to the book, Fawcett's intentions may have been to attain fame by finding not El Dorado but something like Machu Pichu which was “found” in 1911. He visited Cusco and Tiahuanacu and was able to marvel at the achievements of these civilizations. But destiny put him in the Bolivian jungle with the aid of the British government, it wasn't something that he was looking for but that opened his eyes and his innate explorer spirit. Before I even finished reading this book I was compelled to read about the original source, Percy Fawcett's own words, compiled in a book “Lost trail, lost cities” by Brian Fawcett, his son. By reading it, I found out that in his first trip he was hired by the Bolivian government, P. Fawcett does not mention Brazil in the first expedition which was actually work. Now, there are historical details that are not clear. The border problem between Bolivia and Brazil was already established in 1903 after a short war between these two countries and the result was the annexation of the Acre, an area of 190,000 square Kilometers (75,000 sq mls), more than ¾ the size of UK. By the way, something that this book could have in next edition is a better map, the map of Bolivia is not clear. There are details in the Fawcett's book that could have been part of Grann's book or even the movie, like the moment when, after departing La Paz, one of many mules P.F. had, runs away and that was the mule that had the $£1000 in gold he received as part of the payment from the Bolivian government, an interesting historical detail, a “jingling treasure” in the saddle bags. However, Fawcett explains that the mule was brought back by local people who he rewarded. P .F. describes foreigners by name but there is no mention of Bolivian dignitaries with the exception of the president of Bolivia who was taking matters with his own hands and who knew these lands very well. The region next to the Brazilian border bears his name, Pando.“All who have lived in these lands and learned to know them fell captive to their irresistible charm”, Fawcett writes as part of his reflexions. Is this one of the motives he kept coming back?

The best review I can give this fascinating read is that afterward, I had to read more about the land described in this book and the extraordinary people who would risk their lives just to see what's in there.I will not waste time with how insane and egomaniacal someone would have to be to bring their own inexperienced, though physically fit, son into a literal hell - knowing it is hell - and believe that through sheer force of will come out on the other side whole. Fawcett and his ilk are special breeds of men probably best experienced in small doses by society and most useful out conquering the wild unknown. Not that they are bad people, but they did not suffer fools who were not as willing or able to push through the pain. Leg broken? Walk it off.Still, the book is excellent, and the journey the author made to bring this fascinating figure to life was well worth the work. Kudos!

As a fellow author and home chef, I know the sweat and tears that go into creating a book. Spencre's book, however, is so much more than recipes and ingredients. It's a lovingly crafted piece of art. A beautiful tapestry, woven together with the author's personal drawings, vivid collages, a thoughtfully explained guide to herbalism, along with easy recipes for delicious, medicinal cordials. I am new to the world of herbalism, and this guide is well-written and easy to understand for a beginner.Spencre first gives an introduction to the zen-like world of herbs and plants and explains how she came into the practice, how her love of plants began, and how she arrived at the California School of Herbal Studies.Spencre's quiet, thoughtful spirit resonates through every hand-written recipe and the carefully crafted introductory notes about cordials. She also includes a variety of recipes for herbal sweeteners, shrubs (drinking vinegars), and bitters. The book also shares a short, but incredibly use guide to many of the herbs and plants used within the book, along with lessons on self-care and wildcrafting. Spencre also includes helpful resources for more information, and a short, but concise glossary of terms for newbies like me.This is a beautiful, inviting book, that not only tells a story and shares delicious drinkables, but encourages people to slow down. To learn a little bit more about the world around them. To be creative and curious about plants, herbs, and how they can heal. However, my greatest takeaway from this book was realizing that Spencre's real gift is not JUST her love of art, herbs, and cordials; but her ability to draw even the most timid reader into a magical world of soulful kitchen wisdom, kindness, and the healing beauty of nature.

As a fellow herbalist, I can say that this book is truly special! I love that the layout is like an actual zine. I make a lot of recipes both herbal and otherwise and I always tell people to use your intuition. I love that Spencre carries this same energy throughout the book. She gives recipes but suggests you add ingredients using your own intuition and to adjust as you like. This formatting makes it easy to substitute or leave out something if you don’t have it handy. All the herbs and flowers mentioned are very easy to find or forage even in your own yard! And let’s be honest, isn’t alcohol the way we would like to ingest all our herbs! I can’t wait to make these herbal beauties for special occasions or heck any old week night! Running out to the liquor store to stock up on white wines as we speak!

This is a lovely book with recipes of which you can take the time to make for yourself, for others, or with others.Have you ever had someone to buy for and struggled with picking that ‘right’ gift because you know s/he has everything and doesn’t need anything. This book can be a gift but you can create an evening of time together picking something to make. Or, you can take the time on your own (or with a few friends) to create lovely gifts from your heart.

Wonderful little book that looks great in my kitchen. The handwritten recipes are visually beautiful and most importantly, simple and easy to follow. Most of the recipes involve only 2 or 3 steps with ingredients that are available at my grocery store. This is one of the few recipe books I own where I feel like I can actually throw something together in a short amount of time before I have friends over. Highly recommend!

I love this book! It's aesthetically pleasing, the perfect size, and beautifully written. The recipes are easy to create, delicious and whimsical. A true piece of art all around.

I love this book!! the whimsical cover alone is inspiring and once I open the cover I feel whisked away into the author's imagination, moved to visit a garden and then partake in some creative kitchen witchery. the recipes are really fun and accessible while the personal musings root us into a feeling of home and love and care. Spencre talks of many of my favorite & common herbal allies in ways that I never thought of using, sparking a new creative light in me to experiment and rejoice in the deliciousness of the seasons. a wonderful gift and a must have for anyone interested in spicing up their medicine making or kitchen crafting practices, I can imagine gathering a group of friends to create and taste several of these magical plant elixirs throughout the year.

Great book of easy recipes. We got this as a present for one of daughters. We’re going to order another one for our othe daughter.

This book has great recipes to introduce and expert with a diverse host of cordials, infusions, bitters and more. I love that it doesn't just provide recipes for fun but also provides insight into the botanical profile of a number of herbs and recommendations for things like supporting emotional wellness. I also like that the format is artistic and beautiful, a lovely break from the monotony of typical typefaces. Also makes a perfect gift!

The ARC (advance reader copy) of this book was excellent. It was all text with just a few tiny maps, whereas the final volume will include photographs, illustrations and larger maps, according to the publisher. I'm guessing it's going to be even better with those additions. The text alone, without more, is already a 5-star work. The author is an experienced writer, a photojournalist, and a traveler who has spent over a decade traveling through Africa. Her passion for lions has driven her to create a book that brings that magnificent animal to the reader in all its glory and complexity. She clearly has tremendous compassion for this now-endangered species, but she doesn't let her sympathy for the lion blind her to the challenges such a top-of-the-food-chain predator can present to vulnerable villages and livestock. In the course of recounting the history of the lion, she tells us about its successful spread across the globe. Her description of the largest-lion-of-all, the American lion, which roamed throughout North America, was almost all new information to me -- and it was fascinating! On most continents, lions are no more, the most recently-disappeared having become extinct at least 13,000 years ago.Humans did not eliminate those lions, but we are eliminating most of the rest -- and at a speed that rivals extinctions of old. The author describes population growth, habitat loss, food pressures (who knew that lion "bushmeat" is so cheap it makes chicken seem expensive?), vengeful villagers and farmers, bloodthirsty hunters, and other threats to lion survival. She also goes into what some may see as excessive detail, but I believe is wonderful thoroughness in describing efforts to provide sustainable habitats for remaining lions.I highly recommend this book and plan to read it again myself. I did not regularly consult maps the first time through, with the exception of a few chapters. I found that when I had a computer screen open to the google maps view of the continent of Africa and zoomed in to the locations the author was describing, I got a lot more out of the book and retained substantially more information. It's quite a book. Sara Evans has done a lot of research that I wouldn't have been able to do for myself. She has made me a much more informed advocate for these big, golden cats.

From vermin to Almost-Extinct. From livestock destroyer to almost-destroyed. Lion hunting-- A bloody sport, hunted with spears in prehistoric days, then dogs, rifles, and derring-do. Stuffed and mounted in many museums, even put on display in a museum case shown bringing a huge Cape Buffalo to its knees. The mighty Lion-- a symbol of majesty, violence and royalty.Sara Evans brings us a huge and interesting compendium of facts and information on these kingly/queenly majestic animals and shows us how their number are dwindling and how they got to be that way, in this thick, factual and engrossing book. From the earliest of recorded history mankind was at war with cave lions -- the hunters' exploits were the stuff of fable, figurine, and tomb carvings. Then came the displacement of the cave lion by climate change, the heroic epics of Gilgamesh and Samson, the lion gate of Ishtar, the Assyrian bas reliefs of hunters, chariots and fleeing lions -- brought Biblical awareness of lions to the fore. Handed down from generation to generation were the unforgettable exploits of fabled heroes bringing death to the lions who crossed their paths. The Roman Empire created huge spectacles/games in their coliseum of Gladiators fighting lions -- and lions ripping apart Christians. Then came more modern civilization and with it the bravado and skillfulness of British hunters came into play when dealing with (and decimating) Lion populations. Jeeps, high power guns (blasting away and destroying a whole pride in less than 15 minutes....) as well as hunting reservations (where the lions and tigers and other animals are bred to be killed by sport hunters) put a huge dent into these prides. Magnificent individuals reduced to dead bodies -- flesh left to rot while the hides and head went back to be taxidermied.Lions are the ultimate force, the ultimate hunting challenge to deal with (had the dinosaurs not become extinct there would have been a shift in that perception of course) and dealt with they were - by trophy hunters and then more encroachment-- this time of civilization, population explosions, and the diminishing of the lions' natural habitat, by poaching, farming and urban/tribal development.Ms Evans shows us how scientists (such as Packer and Pusey in the 70's) are following prides and assessing their ability (or lack thereof) to reproduce without passing on overbred, defective genes to their progeny. She tells us how the Masai farmers are adding to their income by leasing out fallow land as tourist attractions (Lion Watching) and allowing those prides to live and reproduce. This conservation techniques are not just for Lions-- but as evidenced in Sweden, "Sami herders are paid for the presence of living wolverines and lynxes". In areas in Africa where returning settlers killed off all the local lions, cautious reintroduction is occurring. Man - vs- beast is becoming a man-with-beast co-existence. The re-introduction of lions to Akagera (with a welcoming crowd of cheering villagers) is a success-story-in-the-making."When the Last Lion Roars" shows us how lions and other wildlife CAN co-exist with humans - if the proper protocols, scientific methods, follow-up and interaction with the local (human) populations are adhered to.The last chapter in this book "Beyond Cecil" informs the reader about the "Cecil Conference" as well as future plans, present projects and research -- and outlines the plans in place for conservation, education and field-work in the quest to maintain human-lion interactions.I hope there is a follow up to this magnificent book!!

Absolutely heartbreaking to hear of the free falling decline in Lion numbers. The situation just seems hopeless, but the fact that they are still in the world and that there is still an Asiatic lion at all give some hope. And perhaps education from books like this will create some alarm that will help us to save this iconic animal before it is too late. The two chapters labeled People Hate Lions I and II were sobering while the two labeled People Love lions gave a little hope. All in all, I found the book riveting. Strangely, the first chapter about the spread of fall of the Pleistoscene lions was fascinating. It is amazing how successful the leo family had been in spreading through Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. It is fascinating to think how they were everywhere. Also interesting the story of the disappearance of the Atlas and Cape lions. Less interesting is a section that covers every existing population by country. That got a little tedious but valuable to know how lions are doing country by country, but 20 pages could have been replaced with a table. The writing is a little scattered with staccato sections popping up here and there that reads a little jumpy, but each jump is fascinating. I was totally engaged each time I picked it up (except the country by country part.) It was obviously well researched and quotes a lot of recent research. I just wish the picture was not so gloomy but that is not the author's fault. She offers some hope and plans toward the end, but I'm still shocked at how fast so many populations have dried up, and how at risk the populations I had hope for are.We need to find a way to save the lion as well as wild Africa in a meaningful way.

Very detailed practical info like where to begin and direction to drive for best views along a certain coastline, and what tourist venues are "over-rated".

I love the Kindle version because all of the web addresses are live links which is super convenient. I love Frommer's easy to follow layout and star ratings. I mostly rely on their listings of attractions as I stay with friends when I'm in England so usually don't need to pay for accommodations.

Frommer's is the best hand down. We buy these books for every vacation we take! Very informative and easy to read. Highly recommend.

Lots of very interesting information about the areas we were looking at going too. Well set out in sections of interest.

Great guide to both countries. Former is always very well done.

Very helpful in planning for upcoming trip.

Covers too much ground, with too few details. I get the impression that it concentrates on the tourist traps. OK introduction but you will want more to actually plan a trip.

Always a solid place to start your travel plans. From places to visit, to budget and time optimization, Frommers is a must.

"Excellently produced catalogue. It is, however, much more than a catalogue. . . . These splendid images are the highlight of a timely and well-informed review of one of the most notable and creative episodes in world prehistory."---Colin Renfrew, Times Literary Supplement"This unique collection is the achievement of extraordinary multinational collaborations orchestrated by scholars at New York University, as congratulatory letters from directors of several participating museums bear witness. . . . Although the product book is no longer marketed by its publisher, to judge from the situation here in Colorado many top college and university libraries acquired it when it was. It is worth a curious and admiring look if your library was wise enough to do so."---Victor Castellani, European Legacy"An excellent, up-to-date, and much-needed synthesis on the Copper Age in the lower Danube valley. David Anthony is a renowned researcher, and his expertise is complemented by respected senior researchers who have published widely on southeast European prehistory. The Lost World of Old Europe: The Danube Valley, 5000-3500 BCAn extremely impressive archaeological documentation of a civilization almost entirely unknown until very recently, a civilization relatively very advanced for its time as especially evidenced by excellence in metallurgy. Their abstract sculptures of woman figurines are open to various different interpretations, and readers of this volume can even enjoy formulating their own hypotheses. No actual writing accompanies or is embodied in any of the surviving objects but there was at least a system of annotation. There are no accounts from the earliest historical records or classical period describing these people, and no oral tradition about them remains. What sort of language they spoke is entirely unknown, and it is from a lost civilization such as this that the untraced, isolated and unique language of the Basques may have been derived. It is perhaps emotionally sobering to contemplate the many ramifications of the disappearance of the efforts, activities, loves, devotion, heroism, discoveries, culture and language of an entire major European civilization.

Some of the civilizations described in this book, mostly located in modern Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine and Serbia, lay unnoticed for more than 6,000 years -- even until the 1970s. Yet they knew how to do things the average person in the early 21st Century would be at a loss to re-create. If transported back in time, few of us could design a kiln that could achieve temperatures of over 1,000 degrees C, or know how to control the color of baked clay by controlling the amount of oxygen provided to it. Most people today might be familiar with using a wheel to make rounded pottery -- but some of these cultures thought it up about 2,000 years ahead even of the ancient Egyptians. Some of them also seem to have been using the lost-wax method of metal casting, either contemporaneously with its earliest uses in Mesopotamia or possibly several centuries earlier. To top it all off, they seemed to live mostly during an era of peace: very few settlements were surrounded by palisades or similar defenses. Their settlements were the biggest in the Europe of their day; climate change, rather than invasions, appears to have led to their abandonment. It's humbling to reflect that such civilizations could be forgotten so completely for so long. Most remarkable for me were some of the beautiful ceramics, especially a cup from the Cucuteni civilization dated to 4200-4060 BCE (illustrated @136, as Fig. 6-10). It bears a colorful geometric pattern with repetitive motifs that aren't fully contained by the cup's surface, even though the cup is intact. That is, the potter (probably a woman, BTW, according to current theories) clearly imagined the design as extending far beyond the cup's rim. It's hard not to wonder whether these people could already imagine geometric patterns and surfaces of infinite extent -- more than 3,500 years before Greek and Sanskrit sources talk about the infinite. (Search under "Cucuteni" for images online and you can find some additional examples. Nothing suggests that these cups had lids: and some had a lobed rim design that would have precluded a lid.) The text doesn't make any specific remarks about this type of pattern at all, so it pays to look closely at the photographs. The essays in this book are entirely accessible to a non-specialist in archaeology. They include overviews of the civilizations in the Danube Valley, and of their settlements and architecture, and essays focusing on figurines, Cucuteni ceramics, metallurgy and metal artifacts, shell necklaces that were used in trade with inland communities, and details of two cemeteries discovered within the past 40 years, one of which (at Varna) holds more 5th Millennium BCE gold than previously discovered in the whole world put together. The photographs are clear, and for the most part 1/2 or 1/3 life-sized. Additional photos, at a smaller scale, appear in the checklist for the exhibition to which this was originally a catalogue. (The checklist includes, BTW, information about each object's dimensions). One wishes the book had an index, and that a map of site locations in the first chapter had been reproduced on the front or rear inside cover, for ease of reference; but these are relatively trivial flaws. A fascinating book that expands one's perspective about time and knowledge.

The fullest report to date on a settled culture that seems to have been more advanced artistically and in metallurgy (copper) than the ancient civilisations of the Middle East and of China at that time. "Old Europe" was a pre-Indo-European Neolithic culture in southeastern Europe, located in the Danube River valley but it is not usually described as a 'civilisation' because so far there is no evidence that it was a hierarchical society. The pottery illustrated here is incredibly attractive artistically, and the model houses suggest the houses of Old Europe were multistorey and well-constructed, and located along streets. Read this book - it's an eye-opener.

This book is really more of an exhibition catalogue of the amazing finds of gold objects discovered over the past 20 years or so in Bulgaria and Romania, which predate middle-eastern artifacts. Much real relevance could have been made by the putting the objects in a sequence with Ur and early Egypt, demonstrating that all did not begin in the middle-east.

This is an amazing book, bringing up to date information on the magnificent world of Old Europe. The advanced cultures who developed around modern-day Romania in neolithic are pre-dating ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia with many centuries and are really fascinating. This book gives a great review of all the cultures and provides high resolution images of the incredible artifacts. Many of the showcased artifacts were on display in New York in 2009-2010, for the first time ever in US. I think the book is great for everyone who wants to discover the Old Europe. My only question is, how did the price skyrocket like this? I was able to buy it with $50 in June 2010. High demand maybe?

Amazing material. Too bad no one noticed no artifacts had dimensions noted.

very nice product, in perfect condition, as it was described.

excellent publication; very quick delivery

Be aware even though the publication date is 2018, the material does not cover the new tools, such as Puppet Warp and the new Properties Panelin Adobe Illustrator CC 2018. I haven't look at the other programs but I can safely say they are the also the previous versions....very disappointed...not sure whether I will send it back or not

Great Book! Highly recommend if you are learning Adobe package.

Easy to understand and apply.

I suppose I should have read closer. I just assumed the new edition would have dreamweaver included. That was the main part I needed.

I spent $28.00 on this paperback book and the back cover was torn.

So first things first. This book really has a lot of information. You may not need all the information, but this is handy for those times you use something once in a blue moon. I don't know about you, but I can't remember it all.Of course it was published in 2017 so it is already out-of-date. That's a problem in technology's fast lane. Aside from that, this book is very helpful for a newbie. It also gives some insights into some of the more challenging aspects of the Adobe suite. It's a good book to have on hand if you need info on the go.

Finally a book (large) that covers Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, In Design, Illustrator, Acrobat and Adobe XD. Although it's a lot of information crammed into one book, I find it helpful to be able to lookup a function that I don't use all the time. Being so large, it's a bit cumbersome to use and it takes some time to learn how it's organized. Covers a lot of the basic, beginner information but also delves into some of the more complex tasks. It's by no means a complete guide that covers every tool and function, but I think it does a good job in putting a lot of information in one book that you can keep near your computer for easy lookup as the need arises. I think it's a worthwhile purchase for the beginner to intermediate user of CC. Keep in mind though that is a printed book and will not be the most current as Adobe ads features vis updates.
