This is a collection of chapter-length case studies. In each, the author selects a historically documented meal and then places it in a historical context. The selection of meals themselves is interesting, but what the book lacks is an overall driving narrative/argument/framework. The title, too, is a little misleading, in that some of this is about empire but an awful lot is not and the connection between the two is often tenuous. I guess I would have liked a lot more context and linkage that tied the book together. As written, the book is an interesting collection, and someone might select one or two of the case studies for the sake of a history class (readable, so potentially useful in high school or college). But, at best, they are useful introductions to bigger topics, and there are a great many excellent, readable book-length food histories out there.
The reason I got this book was that it was a book club suggestion.Although I liked the concept of the book, I thought it read more like a text book. Made it a dry read. There were some recipes in the book (added to some choppiness in layout), only a couple were interesting though. Ultimately, I couldn't finish the book
Not only that, it was listed on the reading lists I respect (both of them) as the best nonfiction book of the year. I would concur.
While traveling in former colonial India and Sri Lanka we read this book to get a real perspective on the socio-political and culinary impacts of empire and global trade. Fascinating and informative read. Recommend it for history and food buffs.
I have read several books about food vis a vis history. This one being the weekest. If history is what you are looking for, there are many much better ones.
One of those books that is chocked-block full of information. I highly recommend it.
