I enjoyed the book and learned as I read this personal and honest account of a world I would have , otherwise, never known existed.

Mark Salvatore writes simple, declarative sentences.His Peace Corps memoir, Shade of the Paraiso, is stripped to fact and detail, observation and truth. Even its replication of time — passing slowly at first, building inexorably over months, then racing quickly to its conclusion — makes the narrative foremost a work of literary control.It’s an art, how much the writer reveals of his existence in rural Paraguay — all the while revealing little of his own true emotions.The closest we get to knowing Salvatore is to appreciate his obvious fortitude in the face of familiar Peace Corps challenges: the petty counterpart; the bullying ‘big-man’; the general estrangement from community; the recurring uncertainty. Even the elements, wind and rain and mud, conspire against him.We experience these things, but rarely learn how Salvatore feels about them. Exhibit A, this passage about his garden:'I finished and seeded the soil of two tablones on a warm, clear day with a wind from the east. Great book. A great guide to the waterways and rivers of Central to South Florida. The book was written in 1999 but the information is still good today. IT is easy to read, excellent diagrams (maps) of the rivers. Very useful information if you want to discover new places to paddle throughout South Florida.

This is a really good book for kayakers, if you are not familiar with the area or the weather habits. Each location in Florida is a little different. From tides to weather. What I like about it is it gives you alot of info BEFORE you get out there. This helps make the kayaking adventure more fun, as you are more prepared and aware. If you are not familiar with the area, get this book! I live here in FL, and travel all around. Fortunately, I am already aware of the majority of the info in this book. I was merely looking for more areas to use the kayaks. If you are a beginner, or from out of state...get this book before you head out and become a statistic! ha ha. But really, some good preperation and info will help with a great day of kayaking in the many great areas of Florida!

Nigel Foster has finally turned his excellent writing skills to South Florida. Having kayaked in South Florida for the past 6 years, I have personally done most of the trips described in the book. Mr. Foster's descriptions are brief, but his attention to detail, and excellent on-water guides make the book very useful. Short accounts of the history of some areas (i.e., "The Watson Mystery") enliven the book. It is written in the style of a travel guide - a bit unusual for a guide to kayak touring, but it lends itself to the area. His "Caution" tips, e.g., "Watch out for racoons at your picnic site." are well-chosen. Trip ratings are very reasoned and appropriate, e.g., "Paddling the outer coast is committing, with exposure to the Gulf...Waves across Whitewater Bay generally produce a short chop...No one lives in this area, and there's no way out of it except at the camping sites...." A concisely written book. Well done!

Thank you Nigel Foster for such a complete and wonderful guide! I have been to a few areas in Florida, and can not wait to go this February and "try" out a few more of the recommended trips. A friend and I are going to go to Ding Darling Refuge and the Black Island (Lover's Key) trip at the very least. The trip descriptions have me longing for my vacation to get here. Very good maps, and I appreciate the section on places to stay and camp!

Either a Shakespearean farce or a tragedy from beginning to end.I have always held some skepticism and admittedly a few prejudices towards Wallis and Edward and their so called fairytale romance. The man who gave up his kingship for the woman he loved.Pasternak paints a different picture from what I was used to and I must admit to being touched, particularly at Wallis' last days and the pettiness of the court in not letting her be referred to as HRH in those latter years.Embattled on all sides, determined to marry Wallis, Edward steamed ahead and to some extent his bluff was called. I did shed some tears at the end struck by the misery that Wallis, a perectionist was forced to endure. And I did admire that Edward refused a morganatic marriage. He wanted to be honest with his subjects and true to his idea of marriage. Pasternak won me a tad more to Edwards side with that revelation.The abdication seems to entail a complexity of situations, missed opportunities, and misjudgement on all sides. As it's told, Baldwin didn't want Edward to be king and the intelligence community also had their doubts about him. Winston Churchill wanted him to hang in there. The royal courtiers are blamed as are the Queen Mother and Elizabeth for the continued angst and pettiness towards the couple. I understand why the Royal Elizabeth's were cross enough to cut Edward off the Christmas list, and why. Wallis was obviously 'that woman.'So Pasternak had me examining my feelings towards Wallis and Edward, and even the idea of them being Nazi sympathizers was questioned, although being self absorbed was not! From Pasternak 's point of view they were just being used. And yet they were close friends of Diana Mosley and the Mitford sisters, met with Hitler and some of his henchman. In fact Edward delighted in the way he and Wallis were treated royally on their visit to Germany. And it seems Edward really only wanted to speak German. He admired them and apparently even after the generosity of the French Government towards the couple, Edward still mostly spoke in German. Edward just doesn't come across as being empathetic to the times and occasions. Self absorption is a way of life.However the normal man in the street loved him. They felt understood by him. The reports of his meetings with the workers paint an admirable picture.I still maintain that if Wallis was as canny as indicated, she would have known what was going on, or did Wallis and Edward live too much in their own little cocooned world with its secretive language and endless letters. And oh my, the money Edward spent on jewelry for Wallis!Wallis however still remains an enigma. Did she really just go along for the ride until she found herself in so deep she couldn't get out?I must say though I was enthralled by the fashion discussionsAnything cut on the bias always says sleek and stylish to me, and Wallis was definitely a fashion diva.There's some great reported throwaway lines by the couple.In this day and age their actions wouldn't have turned a hair. But back in the 1930's they scandalized the rest of the world, and the English nation, when the press finally stopped being gentlemanly.So where am I? I still don't like them, but I had moments of being sorry for them and the choices they made. Choices that dug them into a hole a little deeper each time.Am I glad Edward didn't remain as king. Yes, despite Pasternak's well researched presentation. Do I have more sympathy with and understanding of Wallis Simpson, despite still not really liking her, Yes!An Atria Books ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A couple of months ago I listened to a great History Chicks podcast about Wallis Simpson that really piqued my interest, although I’ve always been on Team George VI, myself. One of the History Chicks’ great strengths is that — although always very thorough — they are never catty about their subjects, always sympathetic and empathetic. So, when NetGalley offered me an opportunity to read an ARC copy and review this bio, I was very eager to do so. The first thing to know about this book is that it is in no way, shape, or form an unbiased account. Pasternak is unabashedly Team Wallis & David from the very first page. This put me in the unusual position of mentally ‘answering back’ when Pasternak threw softballs at the duo. Wallis or David would do something rotten, then Pasternak would spend a couple sentences explaining exactly why they did it — because Wallis was under such a terrible strain, or because David just loved Wallis so darned much. I’m obviously not as empathetic or sympathetic as the History Chicks — I found Wallis & David to be a rather unlikeable pair. Pasternak conveys enough of their personalities to convince me why people who knew them really liked them. And she certainly managed to put to bed most of the really scurrilous rumors (which I never believed anyway). But they just weren’t estimable people, no matter how she tried to spin them. Charm is not the same as goodness. Wallis & David were charming, not good. They were self centered and greedy and, when given the chance to be useful, they almost always chose not to be. All that said, it was a heck of a fun, dishy read and I really enjoyed it. I’d certainly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this sort of thing.

I have been absolutely fascinated with Wallis Simpson from the first time that I heard of her. I've read all the books and watched every movie I could find about her and Edward, the Prince of Wales. I was so intrigued that a King would give up his throne for an American divorcee, who was not particularly attractive. As I read this book, it contains so much more than what we have been told. The drama of the relationship and their life is explained in detail. I believed he truly loved her. Giving up the crown was a duty, he felt he owed and was not given up lightly. After this happened, life wasn't one big party for them as they lived in exile a great deal of the time. I was honored to be able to read this book from Net Galley and Atria Publishing for a honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

A well written biography of Wallis Simpson. The author purports that Wallis wasn't all the nasty things that's have been said about her and that she never really wanted to marry Edward. She did not convince me. Wallis was not innocent and played a role in the demise of her second marriage and her affair with the king. Still, it's an interesting theory, but one I don't agree with. Thanks to Edelweiss for the advance read.

#NetGalley This was a very well researched and impressive book about Wallis Simpson and the former King Edward VIII. I am not exactly sure it was a new history, because most of the facts are known, but probably a somewhat different slant. However you present their affair, marriage, and life together it remains a tragedy and not happy reading.It was quite comprehensive, perhaps too much so, and offered perhaps new evidence for the rift between the Prince and former king and his brothers. Financial insecurity, the fact that "David's brother did not want to be King and the antipathy of King George's wife led to a lifetime estrangement. The book was very well done and painstakingly researched. I enjoyed the earlier chapters of Wallis' life prior to coming to England the best. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

This is the first account of the Lapita peoples, the common ancestor of the Polynesians, Micronesians, and Austronesian-speaking Melanesians who over the last 4000 years colonized the islands of the Pacific, including New Zealand and territories as far afield as Fiji and Hawaii. Its purpose is to provide answers to some of the most puzzling archaeological and anthropological questions: who were the Lapita peoples? what was their history? how were they able to travel such great distances? and why did they do so? Recent discoveries (several by the author of this book) have begun at last to yield a coherent picture of these elusive peoples. Professor Kirch takes the reader back many thousands of years to the earliest evidence of the Lapita peoples. He describes the research itself and conveys the excitement of the first discoveries of Lapita settlements, tools and pottery. He then traces the remarkable cultural development and spread of the Lapita peoples across the unoccupied islands of Eastern Melanesia, Micronesia and Western Polynesia. He shows how they became the progenitors of the Polynesian and Austronesian-speaking Melanesian peoples. The author describes Lapita sites, communities and landscapes, the development of their decorated ceramics, and their shell-tool industry. He reveals the means by which they accomplished such prodigious voyages and explains why they undertook them. This book assumes you already know a great deal about pottery archeology in the region before you read it. It constantly refers to places of previous sites and findings but with no clue to where in the vast ocean they are. Author uses a variety of historical place names for locations, as they have changed over the last two hundred years, so there will be places you won't find in maps of your own or on-line. Like many books of this nature, the maps could be much, much better.Text tries to tie together findings from across the Pacific, to track migration and changes in cultures, but fails unless you already know about the POTTERY of all sorts of tiny sites and can imagine where they are.Because so much early archeology was focused on pottery, that is the main focus, and many places in Oceania have no pottery. There are other links between the migrations connections that are unexplored by this book, which seemed to be mostly about pottery.I had hoped by reading it, I would expand on the general overview of this Lapita Peoples and multi-Polynesian migration which I already knew the broad outlines of. I found it impenetrable. I may try again from a later point in the book.

Rather more technical than his "Feathered Gods", especially in his discussion of pottery, surely the core identifier of the "Lapita Peoples" but, even for the non-expert, well worth reading for an for an overview of part of the history of people who would later come to be known as Polynesians and Melanesians. An archaeological exposition ethnic evolution.

A good read. A bit boring at times for the layperson that I am.

I found this book to be of great interest although it was a bit more scholarly than I expected. Given how little is known about that part of the world and the Oceanic peoples I found it to be full of interesting information.

More for a scientific mind. Not my kind of reading.

Even if you don't agree with or understand all of the essays or believe in all the statements, I think this book offers a unique perspective not found anywhere else.Reading Easy Death book and looking back at the profound process we participated in is such a Gift. It frees one up to be able to release someone and it releases the dying person to move on in their journey. Without this, one is either consoling themselves or just coping with their grief or transferring their attachment to someone or something else without any knowledge of the Greater Process - which I believe is necessary for any true sanity in life or death.Take what you can make use of, and leave the rest. See what holds true in your own experience. Try to be open to the ideas and try it out yourself. See if it helps. If you already have your own strong religious belief system, then perhaps this isn't the best book for you. The book content is good, but too heavy and not convenient to read or to carry.

Insightful and challenging!

One particular essay by this author 'The paradox of reincarnation' drew me to this book. I have been influenced by the critique of the author by the writings of William Patrick Patterson "Adi Da Samrfaj: Realised or and Deluded. so I have not felt a great interest in much of it. I have had in the past the opinion that Adi Da was a truly realised being. I now feel that some of his behaviour was not that of such a person. However the above mentioned essay I believe was the as true an accounto the subject as one is likely to find anywhere.

I thought this was going to be a serious book on Death and Dying. The endorsements Looked Fantastic. But, instead what I have is a Book with a lot of Words capitalized (I have no idea why) written by guy who claims to be a God-man. I wish I had noticed before I bought it that there hadn't been a review of the book on Amazon in about a Year and a Half. If you think the capitalized words in this paragraph are distracting, you have some idea of what it's like to Try to Read This BookI'm surprised by the people who endorsed this book. Honestly, I'm only a couple of chapters into it. But, thumbing through it and seeing all the endorsements for Adi Da Samraj's other books, how I can contribute to his religion and the many, many pictures of him, it's just creeping me out so much that I'm sure I won't finish it. Why so many pictures of a man who claims to have conquered ego? I thought I should write this review to warn others who might buy this looking for a serious discussion of death and dying.There does seem to be some interesting wisdom and insights in the book. So, I will try to muddle through it. But, I think many (most?) will find the constant references to Adi Da Samraj's divinity by his "devotees" and the promotion of his religion extremely distracting.

I agree with the other reviewer that this book did have a very cultish slant and personally I just don't buy into the whole Adidam philosophy.The author creeps me out. And I don't get his thing of capitalizing the "M" in the word "My" when refering to himself. I find it sad that there are lost souls out there (ie, his "devotees") who are convinced that only "by means of My Avataric Diven Spiritual Grace" (pg 159)- can they be Divinely Liberated.I would say it ranks right about up there with packing a suitcase, putting on some Nikes and waiting to hitch a ride on a comet.

Easy Death is a how-to manual for easeful, conscious transition from this life into whatever comes next. Initially, I was reluctant to read it, presumably due to resistance/denial/distaste for the taboo subject that we must all confront at some point. But I quickly found that it is much more than a death and dying manual. It is a manual for true life; the fullest life possible, informed by constant communion with divine reality. Adi Da clearly reveals how the conscious embrace of death is the key to liberation and ecstatic living. It is a marvellous book. I am very pleased I read it, and grateful for the work and sacrifice made by Adi Da to provide this liberating wisdom.The other marvel of the book is stories from devotees about the death of loved ones and how Adi Da’s teaching and blessing interventions provided profound spiritual help that enabled acceptance of tragedy, and even liberation in the face of life’s most difficult experience.It is worth reading if you think you may die one day, and in the meantime want to live as fully as possible.There are some negative comments here on Amazon about Adi Da and this book. For over 40 years I have carefully examined and participated in the community of Adi Da’s devotees in the skeptical attitude of a college trained engineer and a serious student of spiritual practice. My report is that Adi Da and his teaching is authentic. Anyone who views him and his work with an open mind and heart will enjoy profound liberating power operating in their life.
