I have recommended this book to several female friends in order to get a report on how it was received. Not being able to carry out the reproduction exercise I can only say- WOW it gave me a new positive perspective on motherhood.

terrific little book ! i lapped up every word--then sent it to a native american friend who's pregnant and she adored it ! one of my favorite erdrich books !

This is by far the best book I've ever read on the emotional struggles and rewards of mothering. The Blue Jay's Dance is full of poetic descriptions that are so powerful you feel like you are there with the author, watching through her eyes. This book changed the way I see the world, my children and myself. I highly recommend Louise Erdrich. Her books are meticulously researched and written from more than one point of view.

I love all of Louise Erdrich’s fiction books so it was fun to read this too. Great book, I would recommend to new parents

bought it for my pregnant daughter whose husband is an ojibwe canadian. not sure if she read it yet, but i did and i enjoyed it. i had thought it was about the birth of ms. erdrich's youngest daughter , but actually it was a much older book talking about her older 3 daughters' births. sadly her late husband michael dorris is mentioned and his suicide is in the future.

I love Louise Erdrich. I have read eight of her books. I have trouble putting her down.

I highly recommend this book as a real account of what it's like to be a new mother. Buy it for all the moms in your life, it makes a great Baby Shower or Mother's Day gift. Erdrich is engaging, funny, poignant, and captures the beauty of that first year with your child.

I had the very great privilege to see Captain Richard Phillips speak in person at a university and I have to say, it was thrilling. His talk started out a tiny bit stilted and rehearsed and he seemed a tad nervous (kind of ironic that an audience would make him at all jittery after what he went through at sea), but as the talk went on, it got much more intense. For some reason he couched the talk in a sort of "business achievement" format (which I gather was probably suggested to him by his booking agency) and those parts were OK, but again, a bit stilted. But once he got back into the memories, once he began to relive his fears and his accomplishments (and failures) those five days at sea, the talk got very exciting.I had bought this book before the talk but didn't get a chance to read it all the way through. But the next day I sat down and read the entire book and I'm so glad that I had it right there. I was able to use the book to relive parts of the talk and to better understand some of the fine points of his very brave adventure. When you see a movie of an event like this, you have to wonder how much is Hollywood and how much is reality, but after having seen him talk and having read this book, that movie is extremely close to portraying exactly what happened. In the Q&A after the talk, in fact, someone asked him that very question: How much of the movie was invented for drama? His reply was that while certain bits of the timelines were altered in small ways and certain events that happened weren't actually shown (in the movie and news stories there were only three shots fired, for example, but in reality many were fired), most of the movie was a very accurate reflection of actual events.If that's the truth, and I believe it is, this is one very brave guy. In the face of near certain death, he put his ship's cargo and his crew ahead of his own life--and he figured out a way to outwit the pirates very early on. It was a gamble, but it saved everyone's lives.I highly recommend both this book and the film. Books like this always have a ghost author involved because, let's face it, he's a sea captain not a writer, but it is his voice that comes through. And I really hope that the writing bug will get ahold of the Captain, because I'd love to hear more about the sea and about his life as a Merchant Marine.If you get the chance to see Captain Phillips speak, do whatever you have to do to get there. In the meantime, what a great summer read this is--I can't wait to read it a second time. My only regret is that I didn't get an opportunity to ask him to sign my book! Next time.

If you’re like me and bought this after seeing the movie “Captain Phillips” you will have a pleasant, easy read ahead of you. The first third of the book I found a little annoying; the author comes across arrogant and self righteous. There is a lot of “I do things this way”, “I am like this”, “I say this because”, etc etc. However the second two thirds of the book are exciting and action packed, and the reader gets a far better understanding of how the author operates and what motives him. I wish there were details on how the crew reacted to the whole saga and if he had interactions or conversations with his crew after he was rescued. Overall this was an easy read, interesting, and a nice piece to add to our understanding of an event that will be included in American history. I do recommend it.

I saw the movie starring Tom Hanks in the lead role. That had me wanting more of the story. I didn't need as much biographical information on Captain Phillips as in the book, but it wasn't much of a distraction. He also lets the reader know more than a few times what a superb boss he is - toots his own horn a bit much. The book does an admirable job of giving the minutiae of what happened in a way a movie can't. In relating what happened he gives readers what he was thinking and feeling all along the way - something a movie can't do as well. This was a very interesting read and I highly recommend it.

Captain Phillips tells his story as he lived it--as it happened, with the insight, feeling and emotion which only he could bring to this fascinating true life story. A self-effacing man who put his crew first--above even his own life--Captain Phillips evokes the self-sacrifice of hundreds of years of seamen, especially captains, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their crews. Captain Phillips is a hero--unique perhaps in our time, but then piracy is also unique (or ought to be) in our time. It is remarkable to think that in the twenty-first century we have pirates operating with impunity on the oceans of the world--holding hostage the nations of the world and collecting hundreds of millions of dollars in ransom. How does one train for that? Captain Phillips did. He was prepared, perhaps better than most. He kept his head and, as a result, kept the lives of his crew.Not enough praise can be given to the Navy Seals who operate behind the scenes but whose operations are seen through Captain Phillip's eyes, in the few, but important glimpses he gets of them. A wonderful true story told with compassion by the man who lived it.

I first saw the film, then read the book. Only someone with a strong will and a highly developed ego could have behaved in the way Captain Phillips behaved, and survived. He was, and is, clearly a "by the book" ship's officer. His type are rarely universally popular with ships' crews.The ordeal Phillips underwent at the hands of the sometimes unstable pirates tested every fibre of his physical and mental being, and it is evident that he drew strength from however submerged his spiritual beliefs may be.The book captures well the tensions, the heat, and the awfulness of the claustrophobic space in the small boat in which he was held captive. The high seas will never be fully devoid of pirates and piracy, but it is only by active resistance to their illegal operations and brutality that freedom of the seas will have any hope of continued existence. Phillips, and those who came to his rescue, combined to say something very strong about the value of coolness, fortitude, and a refusal to be overwhelmed by overwhelming forces.The quality of the writing isn't all that it might have been, but it is a story that in all its absence of a polished style, deserves to be read, and is ultimately uplifting and rewarding.

About the Author

Lewis Carroll, sometimes referred to by his real name “Charles Lutwidge Dodgson,” was an English writer as well as pursuer of many other artistic and intellectual fields. We ordered the Alice in Wonderland with the green leather cover. I thought it was difficult to tell which reviews went with which versions. I'm really glad we grabbed this version, the cover (despite the ugly green color) is quite beautiful with embossed lettering and shiny red roses and border. The edge of the pages are golden, there is a red ribbon for marking your page. All of the original artwork is presented, and the page layouts are perfect. The front and back cover have a vivid full color painting of the tea party. If you are looking for a high quality version of the book, I couldn't recommend this one more. The size is medium. It is half way between the size of a paperback and a hard cover text book.

This review is for the RED "hardcover" and I will post pictures because when I read reviews prior to purchase I was super confused and had no idea which book the reviews were about.First, the cover is gorgeous but it's not "hardcover" (see photo). It's a lovely soft cover, covered with leather which is partially embossed; the gold lettering appears to be painted on. The back cover is just as well made and embossed as well.Second, this is the full version of both stories, not an "abridged" version.The generous illustrations are beautifully done.I can't believe this book is only $10!I hope my review helps!

I had a difficult time determing which version was being reviewed in many of these reviews, so I am specifically reviewing the version that is illustrated by Anna Bond. This is a great version to use with younger kids- it has larger print and illustrations on almost every page. If you want to purchase accompanying audio to listen with, just buy the unabridged version and it should be a match.

This is incredible! Absolutely beautiful.. Extended my expectations!! I have seriously never seen a more beautiful book! The detail is awesome and even the story itself is from the original Lewis Carroll version. Not only is each page a beautiful pop up.. But each page has mini fold out pages with more pop up artwork. This will be a keepsake for our family. SO glad I bought this and will look at buying others!

I loathe when Amazon lumps the reviews of different books together so this is for the hardcover version illustrated by Charles Santore. The cover is beautiful with an older looking cover and the color illustration of Alice falling. The sketches throughout the book are in black and white. The pages are thick and sturdy but cut roughly on the sides. The font is a great size and spacing and on a very white background. I hate when they use a small print and tight spacing on older books. The sketches are beautifully done and do a wonderful job of bringing Alice and the story to life. They do pale in comparison to the illustrated versions but unfortunately that edition is abridged. I had never read the story before so I was not aware of the differences between Alice’s Adventures Underground and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but there are many. This book for example does not have the chapter on the Mad Tea Party. That and other parts would be added in to the story so if that’s the version you are interested in than this is not the version for you.

I don't always like annotated editions, but I bought this one because both stories were included and it retains all of the original illustrations like the ones I remember reading as a child. Having said that, I enjoyed the illustrations by other artists included for historical context. Some of them are quite stunning, in fact. The thing I hate about annotated editions is the way the annotations create visual "clutter." Yes, that is the case here as well. I really have to force my slightly OCD-like mind to ignore that and concentrate on the text of the story. However, as a history buff, I enjoy reading the annotations from a historical perspective. It's a big book, so if you enjoy a hefty hardcover, this is the one for you.

This review is specifically for the penguin hardcover cloth-bound classics edition (white with pink flamingos)!Naturally, the tale of Alice in Wonderland (told in two books; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) is definitely a fun, unique tale that appeals to children and adults alike, so of course I wanted to own a quality copy of it! I like how this edition contains both books and is hardcover with a simple cover design that looks timeless and elegant on my bookshelf. The book is full of useful notes and information in edition to having the tale; plus it contains the classic illustrations too! The paper is very high quality, the printing very attractive, and overall it was well worth the $10 I spent on it. I thought it was such an attractive edition that I bought one for my sister, who is a collector of the various editions of this tale. I've no complaints except that I don't really care for how rough the fabric is; it's not very nice to hold in your bare hands in my opinion, and it makes a sound when it's placed on the shelf next to other cloth-bound hardcovers from the penguin classics series, so those are two things to keep in mind. I personally would have preferred either a softer fabric or for the books to have been bound in hard-backed pleather.

I'm bummed. I purchased this film to learn his suggestions for what type of camera to use (lowest profile with the best quality) and shooting techniques while freediving and its more of an book on how to Freedive (which I already know, I'm a freediving instructor). This book doesn't cover what I thought it did. A decent book on freediving, I'd still recommend taking a class for safety reasons.

This is a very nice coffee table book.....filled with beautiful pictures of President Obama showing his softest side. I am a big fan of his and this book is a nice keepsake for me to remember his presidency. He has always exhibited such class and compassion.

This coffee table book is pretty simple. It alternates pictures of the USA's 44th president hugging people with supportive, positive quotes from him. My favorite pictures are those of Obama hugging children. They are high quality photographs of happy moments with a personable leader.
