It will take you on a ride deep into the inter-workings of the billion dollar enterprise that is college football, and when you finish, I believe that this book might cause you to look at your favorite program in a slightly different light.In closing ... Any college football fan will enjoy this book. It is an easy read and interesting enough to keep a reader turning pages.The real shocker for me was the unexpected appearance of an old, high school classmate of mine and his mentions and appearances throughout the book. I was lucky enough to attend high school with (the late) Elson Floyd. At the time of this book, he was the president of Washington State University, member of the Pac 12. He was an all-around great guy in school and as an adult, too, according to this book. It was terrific fun to read the personal, behind-the-scenes information about Elson, not just his academic and professional credentials. Once again, sincere condolences to his family.There are no real revelations in this book. If you are a college football fan, you either already know or surmised it all. However, it's an interesting and enjoyable read.

The book is well-researched and well-written, it is very easy to read and follow. I learned a lot of things about the college football business that I did not know. And yet, I was disappointed. After all the research turned up several serious problems that are fully documented in the book, the authors did NOT offer any solutions. It is very clear to me, as a long-time fan of college football, that this system has gotten way out of control. College football is the tail wagging the university "dog". The old "bowl system" did not work, so we went to the BCS. That system did not work, so we morphed into the Football Championship Series with a 4-team playoff. Along the way, ESPN and other networks or media companies pour billions into the "system". Coaches, bowl committees, university presidents all seemingly "make money" from this enterprise, but the truth is that only a handful of top universities make a profit from college football. There is a huge churn of revenue but also a huge and equal churn of expenses, in most cases. My alma mater, for example, LOST $1.7 M in 2014. All of that had to come out of the university's general fund (ie., the pockets of students and their families via student fees). Meanwhile, the NFL makes "out" because colleges are de facto minor league football teams. The NCAA is at a loss how to police this situation, cheating is rampant. I would have hoped that a thoughtful book like this would have proposed SOME kind of change to evolve the system once more and rectify the obvious deficiencies that the book documented.

I heard about this on the Paul Finebaum Show. I am a fledgling of college football. My oldest son used to sit and watch college football with his dad. After he left, I tried to watch the game with intent, so when my husband (who is very knowledgeable about the sport) would want to talk about plays, coaches, programs, etc, I would be contributing more than just, "Yes, honey. Oh, that is very interesting." So, more than learn the different conferences and teams comprising the conferences, coaches, etc, I have begun reading books about the sport. I really do recommend this book. It is well written. There are aspects of the book that are difficult to read, yet they are part of the institution that is college football.

The System is extraordinarily well written with the authors passion on the subject coming through in each chapter. Written more in the style of a novel than a traditional documentation, each chapter is a standalone part, with coaches, players, and schools interweaving throughout the book.The title "Glory and Scandal" fits the book well, as it focuses exclusively on neither, rather taking the reader on an emotional rollercoaster through the highs and lows of the lives associated with college football. Points are balanced, well researched, and consistent with other sources.For the diehard college fan, or the casual observer interesting in learning more on how college football works, this book is one of the few must reads.

This little beauty 6 basic exercises and a small selection of extras. The reader can make a quick, informed start...begin to see progress on the double.. and then later jazz the routine up with exotic extras.Best $11 I ever spent.

The thing that differentiates this books from similar books is that it understands that there isn't one secret to getting a six pack. Rather, it is about knowing a pile of different tricks and tips in order to reach the goal. All of our bodies are different. So, if you want to get a six pack you will need to try different things and see which ones work best for you. For me doing situps was a no-go. However, crunches were completely doable and the other tricks in this book completely blew my mind at how good they were!

Each of the exercises was detailed, with a picture of the right execution and provides safety tips and possible variations. There’s really a lot to learn from this book.

I've been looking for an ab book like this for a long time now. So glad I found this, it's awesome. It begins with the basics of the abdominal anatomy which I thought was just brilliant. It gives you a complete overview of all of the muscles in your abdominal area. It also covers nutrition and supplements which are key to getting into shape. And then it jumps right in to several workouts and routines to help you achieve the perfect six pack. This is a really great book. I highly recommend it.

I personally pick this book for my husband since his medical exam is upcoming. He is into weight loss now and achieving the abs he wants. I have a lot of books in my kindle on weight loss and this is one of the best. Thanks Felix Harder.

About the Author

Momoko Kuroda (b. 1938 in Tochigi Prefecture) is one of the most highly-respected haiku poets in Japan today. She has published five collections of haiku, and authored or co-authored another 22 prose works including essays, season- word compendiums, books on haiku for beginners, and a two-volume set of interviews with notable Showa-era poets. Her first haiku collection earned her the Modern Haiku Women award and the Haiku Association New Poet award. In 2011 she was awarded the Dakotsu prize, Japan’s most prestigious haiku award. She is a haiku selector for the Nihon Keizai Shimbun’s weekly Sunday haiku column, and a frequent haiku selector for NHK television. She is on the jury of several national and regional haiku contests, including the annual Mainichi Shimbun haiku award. In 1990, she founded her own haiku organization, AOI, with a nationwide membership of several thousand. All this she accomplished while working full-time at Hakuhodo, a Tokyo-based advertising firm, until her retirement at age 60.Abigail Friedman, a retired diplomat and accomplished, award-winning haiku poet, began composing haiku in a haiku group that met at the foot of Mt. Fuji, led by Japanese haiku master Momoko Kuroda. Her book, The Haiku Apprentice: Memoirs of Writing Poetry in Japan (Stone Bridge Press, 2006), captures that experience and her insights into haiku. She is founder of HaikuQuebec, the first French/English bilingual haiku group in Quebec City. Its polished layout style makes this a pretty little book. And if your interest is in knowing about the life of Momoko Kuroda this book offers glimpses through the eyes of a friend.But if your interest is to understand the way Kuroda writes haiku you will need to explore other translations of her verses. At least some of the verses in this book are not true to the poet's actual meaning. They have been rearranged, the kireji (cutting word) misplaced or changed, and suffused with substituted words when succinct words are available.Fortunately, Friedman reveals a more literal translation of one of the selected verses in her commentary on the flycatcher verse [pg. 110], but the verse falls close to the end of the book, leaving the reader wondering about all that came before.The final section shows modern-day haiku as it morphs into personal introspection with its increased frequency of the self as subject matter. With this shift the natural world seems to lose its power as the broad allegory for the cycles of human existence -- a faintly visible waning day moon.

DO judge this book by its cover. "I Wait for the Moon" is a gift to be slowly savored as one uncovers its treasures. The book cover, the size, the texture of the paper, the visual organization, the scale of all is the perfect format for its rich contents.Beginning with the opening photograph of the poet, Momoko Kuroda, next to her haiku on a stone monument, I was intrigued and amazed at how the sculptor organized the haiku, fitting in the Kanji and kana into a "circular" format, elongating, shortening, yet all is "present”. It is the perfect introduction to a book which is far more than its description of haiku translated into English with commentary by Abigail Friedman.Following “The Haiku Apprentice”, Friedman’s first book, Kuroda is always central to this new book but enriched enormously by what is far more than commentary. The personal stories, the painting of the scenes and places at which the haiku were written, the comparisons to other quoted haiku poets interpreting the same places, and the culture and history of Japan is ever present and interwoven. More than anything else as the highest recommendation is the immensely pleasurable readability of the whole book. It is broad stroked and intimate at the same time. The unusual and highly talented persona of Kuroda comes alive within its pages and at the same time shows us the talents of translation and illumination by Abigail Friedman.

As usual, an excellent presentation of haiku and the translations thereof. Ms. Friedman has spent many years in Japan and has been an assiduous student of the literary form. She is also fluent in Japanese both reading and writing the language.

I Wait for the Moon is a lovely compilation of Momoko Kuroda's work that can be enjoyed by haiku lovers and novices a like. Kuroda's poems are evocative, and she possess such a range in topics that she is able to bring to life in a few short lines. My favorite section of the book is "Deep Beneath the Sea," which is a sub-collection about the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear disaster. She juxtaposes the flora of Japan while capturing the heartbreak of the survivors who lost family members and their livelihoods.The work of editor Abigail Friedman is also much appreciated because she provides as much and as little information about Kuroda so that the reader can interpret their own meaning from the haikus on their own. Friedman also provides context to her translations and certain Japanese figures, which is helpful for readers who have never heard of Kuroda or know little about Japanese culture.Overall, this book is a good introduction for American readers to Kuroda and haiku.

As a person who has studied many of the sciences for over 50 years and who became a Christian 14 months ago, I found this book to be a genuine treasure. It should be made into a movie. Although it can be fairly technical sometimes, even a layman can grasp most of the concepts. Having it laid out visually with a good narrator could make it available to a much wider audience. Having said that, I do highly recommend getting this book and working your way through it. It will be well worth your time and effort.

I am neither a scientist nor a theologian, but I loved this book. I've always subscribed to the seven literal (i.e., 24 hour) days of creation. This book opened myeyes to the intricate eeons of careful preparation measured in "God days", possibly billions of years. Some of the technical terms were a little above my head; however, the concepts were eventually explained in terms simple enough even for me. The great mass of improbably tight tolerances required to support life as we know it left me filled with awe. In the end,, the point is not how long it took God to create this earth but that He invested so much to make it what it is. Wow. Definitely worth reading.

My neurosurgeon, Stan Rouhe, gave an interview to a couple of his friends in the final days of his life as he accepted the fact that his current battle with pancreatic cancer was leading to his physical death. He did not fear death because he said he knew that God's existence was a FACT! He said that he arrived at that conclusion after he read a book by Hugh Ross that his daughter had given him. His friends posted their interview online enabling his friends to share his last thoughts and spiritual growth during his last days on Earth. I asked myself what kind of scientific proof could have convinced my friend and doctor of 40 years to make such a bold statement as "God's existence is a FACT." I went straight to Amazon and ordered this book on my kindle so that I, too, could have su ch scientific certainty of God's existence.I did not expect to be convinced. I expected to still have to depend on faith. That was not the case. I finished the book with a sense of absolute knowledge. The scientific information is arranged as an analogy of building a complex structure. It shows how complex the process was to create a planet capable of supporting advanced forms of life was. The planet had to revolve around a star of a particular size and mass, a particular distance away, with a particular age, luminosity, and radiation. Elements had to be created in specific amounts and concentrations at exactly the right times. Different forms of life had to be created and extinguished at exact times to create heavy metals and fossil fuels for future use. Ice ages had to appear at particular predictable intervals, and continents had to drift, collide, and lift mountains and plateaus like the one in Tibet. There had to be a particular amount of water and a specific amount of land. Certain forms of life needed to appear at certain times to control temperature and form soil . No other planet located in the Milky Way comes even close to meeting these requirements. Complex forms of life dependent upon each other suddenly appeared sooner than could be formed by evolution.I went on the internet to find my long-term friend and doctor--only to find my friend is gone from this world and to be given the same scientific proof of God's existence that he found before his passing. The scientific case for God appears to be stronger in this book than it is in the Bible. The book is a wonderful, parting gift.

I had 2 courses of astronomy in college and could only read a few pages at a time. It is complex maybe because I didn't take physics in college. I did comprehend it and found it very informative. He sticks to the sciences of the planet and galaxy with a super intelligent designer in mind. The religious portion doesn't show up until the last chapter. He definitely knows what he writes in explaining how lucky we are to have a planet to live on. It made me appreciate Earth more. It is not a simple read. It is written for people interested in astronomy and/or astrophysics.

His photographs are featured in The Living Waters of Texas by Ken Kramer, and he is the recipient of the 2010 Art in Service to the Environment Award by the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club. THAD SITTON is a Texas historian and author who is best known for his expertise in oral history and East Texas. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books, most recently the award-winning Caddo: Visions of a Southern Cypress Lake. He lives in Austin, Texas.

Nature lovers will enjoy an adventure well off the beaten path, and amateurs of wild and dramatic photography will be wowed. The Neches is an East Texas river whose chaotic beauty and wildness has been uniquely preserved. Charles Kruvand and fellow photographer Adrian Van Dellen canoed the length of the river and camped on its swampy shores in all seasons, through droughts and floods, and they fell in love: the Neches with its mystifying wooded banks is a piece of paradise. I especially loved Kruvand’s description of his encounter with the river residents, birds, and insects in their native habitat, as it is full of poetic sensitivity. A snapping turtle locks onto a carp and the fish seems to be sending the author distress signals. An alligator stands threateningly by the two men’s camp and Kruvand theorizes that it is protecting a nearby beaver nursery from where kitten-like chirps can be heard. In all, a very charming account of an intrepid adventure on a chaotic and vibrant river that hasn’t fallen to development yet, but also a warning that it is up to us to preserve such natural beauty for future generations.

I have long loved Charles Kruvand’s photographs, the way he captures the spirit and beauty of Texas waters. In Riverwoods: Exploring the Wild Neches, we are graced with more of his exquisite images. The difference this time is that he chronicles not just with images but with words. And what a sprightly, invigorating writer he is. He begins by explaining that he was little inclined at first to explore this lowland river system, preferring ‘crystalline waters’ and ‘good-looking rivers’ to the mocha-colored Neches and its overflow bottomlands. But having been persuaded to the task, he falls hard for this lowland river system, all the more when he learns how imperiled it is, and how ravishing. As he takes us along for twelve months of exploring the bewitchment that is the Neches in all its seasons, prepare to be delighted, and deeply moved. His marveling love for this place, his light-drenched photographs by day, the harrowing screechings and mysterious dragging sounds outside his tent by night, the deep and deeply researched kinship he pursues with flora and fauna, the unfolding friendship between him and his guide—priceless. And such a friendship! The two men share the same passion for photography and for blending as thoroughly as they can with wild places. Whatever the sacrifice of comfort and ease, they share the same all-in determination to preserve that which may well be lost, if someone doesn’t care, and take concrete action. But in Charles we have a poet-mystic, someone who sees both the fact and the poignantly lyrical in crayfish and carp, the stern spirituality of army ant and armadillo. In Adrian Van Dellen we have an ascetic no-nonsense man of science, who insists that much as he loves them—in another life he was a veterinarian—animals are nothing like us. The mutually tolerant interactions of these two men around this difference in outlook are engagingly told, as are their adventures in this wild and wonderful part of our heritage.

Judging by the cover this is not an unusual book. It’s a large format photography book about the Neches River in East Texas. Amazon lists it under the following categories: sports & outdoors, outdoor recreation, canoeing, rivers… I have glanced through many such books over the years—on friend’s coffee tables, in doctor’s offices, in bookstores, at the library — always focusing on the images. I have never read such a book cover to cover. I may have read a paragraph here and there for context, but wouldn’t think of reading one front to back. What a yawn! Life is short. The text in most such books is there, let’s face it, to fill the unavoidable whitespace that remains when all the photographs have been laid out. It’s the literary equivalent of parsley. But not this book. I met Charles in a writing workshop and read drafts of the manuscript as the book developed over several years. I by no means want to diminish the photographs which are lovely—see for example Cypress Roots, page 69 and Ghost Tree, page 159—but if I were being sent into exile and forced to choose between the photos and text, I would take the text.Riverwoods is a very personal wilderness memoir. Charles and his fellow photographer, Adrian van Dellen, spent one hundred and eighty-two nights on the river, canoeing the Neches in every month and season of the year. There is a long introduction to the book by Thad Sitton, but I suggest you dive straight into Charles’ account and save Sitton’s intro for later. Along for the ride on Charles’ and Adrian’s adventures, you get to know both men, and through them, the Neches, the last wild river in Texas. On one trip you experience a drought so severe that advancing downriver means portaging again and again over logjams. In a later chapter, you witness severe floods that dramatically widen the river and leave flotsam hanging far up in the trees. Charles describes natural beauty as well as any nature writer living or dead. Here are some snippets: insects hummed like static, bull-headed clouds, Cyprus knees arranged like soldiers, Kinglets flashed in brilliant catches of feathery sunshine. A tree frog’s eyes are—dark marbles speckled with flecks of golden foil. He recounts a water snake and bass locked in mortal combat—lurching a foot off the ground and battering themselves against the rocky shore. Great-blue Herons mob a bald eagle—like a squadron of long necked fighter jets. If you read poetry you will like this book. Charles’ narrative is funny, frequently mischievous, poetic and above all, a powerful argument for why we need wildness and why this unique habitat should be protected.The narrative, descriptions and photographs work in concert to create an incredible sense of place. When you finish the book, you will feel you’ve canoed the river yourself (although, by all means, see it in person). But wait you say, isn’t that in East Texas? Yes, the Neches River is in East Texas. If Austin is the modern new south, East Texas is still very much the old south. But it is precisely because East Texas is cloistered far from urban modernism that pristine habitats like the Neches can still thrive there. This book is an opportunity to explore what East Texas has to offer. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it.
