8 On Monday, March 25, Lee came walking up Neely Street carrying a long package wrapped in brown paper. Peering through a tiny crack in the curtains, I could see the words REGISTERED and INSURED stamped on it in big red letters. For the first time I thought he seemed furtive and nervous, actually looking around at his exterior surroundings instead of at the spooky furniture deep in his head. I knew what was in the package: a 6.5mm Carcano rifle—also known as a Mannlicher-Carcano—complete with scope, purchased from Klein’s Sporting Goods in Chicago. Five minutes after he climbed the outside stairs to the second floor, the gun Lee would use to change history was in a closet above my head. Marina took the famous pictures of him holding it just outside my living room window six days later, but I didn’t see it. That was a Sunday, and I was in Jodie. As the tenth grew closer, those weekends with Sadie had become the most important, the dearest, things in my life. 9 I came awake with a jerk, hearing someone mutter “Still not too late” under his breath. I realized it was me and shut up. Sadie murmured some thick protest and turned over in bed. The familiar squeak of the springs locked me in place and time: the Candlewood Bungalows, April 5, 1963. I fumbled my watch from the nightstand and peered at the luminous numbers. It was quarter past two in the morning, which meant it was actually the sixth of April. Still not too late. Not too late for what? To back off, to let well enough alone? Or bad enough, come to that? The idea of backing off was attractive, God knew. If I went ahead and things went wrong, this could be my last night with Sadie. Ever. Even if you do have to kill him, you don’t have to do it right away. True enough. Oswald was going to relocate to New Orleans for awhile after the attempt on the general’s life—another shitty apartment, one I’d already visited—but not for two weeks. That would give me plenty of time to stop his clock. But I sensed it would be a mistake to wait very long. I might find reasons to keep on waiting. The best one was beside me in this bed: long, lovely, and smoothly naked. Maybe she was just another trap laid by the obdurate past, but that didn’t matter, because I loved her. And I could envision a scenario—all too clearly—where I’d have to run after killing Oswald. Run where? Back to Maine, of course. Hoping I could stay ahead of the cops just long enough to get to the rabbit-hole and escape into a future where Sadie Dunhill would be . . . well . . . about eighty years old. If she were alive at all. Given her cigarette habit, that would be like rolling six the hard way. I got up and went to the window. Only a few of the bungalows were occupied on this early-spring weekend. There was a mud- or manure-splattered pickup truck with a trailer full of what looked like farm implements behind it. An Indian motorcycle with a sidecar. A couple of station wagons. And a two-tone Plymouth Fury. The moon was sliding in and out of thin clouds and it wasn’t possible to make out the color of the car’s lower half by that stuttery light, but I was pretty sure I knew what it was, anyway. I pulled on my pants, undershirt, and shoes. Then I slipped out of the cabin and walked across the courtyard. The chilly air bit at my bed-warm skin, but I barely felt it. Yes, the car was a Fury, and yes, it was white over red, but this one wasn’t from Maine or Arkansas; the plate was Oklahoma, and the decal in the rear window read GO, SOONERS. I peeked in and saw a scatter of textbooks. Some student, maybe headed south to visit his folks on spring break. Or a couple of horny teachers taking advantage of the Candlewood’s liberal guest policy. Just another not-quite-on-key chime as the past harmonized with itself. I touched the trunk, as I had back in Lisbon Falls, then returned to the bungalow. Sadie had pushed the sheet down to her waist, and when I came in, the draft of cool air woke her up. She sat, holding the sheet over her breasts, then let it drop when she saw it was me. “Can’t sleep, honey?” “I had a bad dream and went out for some air.” “What was it?” I unbuttoned my jeans, kicked off my loafers. “Can’t remember.” “Try. My mother always used to say if you tell your dreams, they won’t come true.” I got into bed with her wearing nothing but my undershirt. “My mother used to say if you kiss your honey, they won’t come true.” “Did she actually say that?” “No.” “Well,” she said thoughtfully, “it sounds possible. Let’s try it.” We tried it. One thing led to another. 10 Afterward, she lit a cigarette. I lay watching the smoke drift up and turn blue in the occasional moonlight coming through the half-drawn curtains. I’d never leave the curtains that way at Neely Street, I thought. At Neely Street, in my other life, I’m always alone but still careful to close them all the way. Except when I’m peeking, that is. Lurking. Just then I didn’t like myself very much. “George?” I sighed. “That’s not my name.” “I know.” I looked at her. She inhaled deeply, enjoying her cigarette guiltlessly, as people do in the Land of Ago. “I don’t have any inside information, if that’s what you’re thinking. But it stands to reason. The rest of your past is made up, after all. And I’m glad. I don’t like George all that much. It’s kind of . . . what’s that word you use sometimes? . . . kind of dorky.” “How does Jake suit you?” “As in Jacob?” “Yes.” “I like it.” She turned to me. “In the Bible, Jacob wrestled an angel. And you’re wrestling, too. Aren’t you?” “I suppose I am, but not with an angel.” Although Lee Oswald didn’t make much of a devil, either. I liked George de Mohren--schildt better for the devil role. In the Bible, Satan’s a tempter who makes the offer and then stands aside. I hoped de Mohrenschildt was like that. Sadie snubbed her cigarette. Her voice was calm, but her eyes were dark. “Are you going to be hurt?” “I don’t know.” “Are you going away? Because if you have to go away, I’m not sure I can stand it. I would have died before I said it when I was there, but Reno was a nightmare. Losing you for good . . .” She shook her head slowly. “No, I’m not sure I could stand that.” “I want to marry you,” I said. “My God,” she said softly. “Just when I’m ready to say it’ll never happen, Jake-alias-George says right now.” “Not right now, but if the next week goes the way I hope it does . . . will you?” “Of course. But I do have to ask one teensy question.” “Am I single? Legally single? Is that what you want to know?” She nodded. “I am,” I said. She let out a comic sigh and grinned like a kid. Then she sobered. “Can I help you? Let me help you.” The thought turned me cold, and she must have seen it. Her lower lip crept into her mouth. She bit down on it with her teeth. “That bad, then,” she said musingly. “Let’s put it this way: I’m currently close to a big machine full of sharp teeth, and it’s running full speed. I won’t allow you next to me while I’m monkeying with it.” “When is it?” she asked. “Your . . . I don’t know . . . your date with destiny?” “Still to be determined.” I had a feeling that I’d said too much already, but since I’d come this far, I decided to go a little farther. “Something’s going to happen this Wednesday night. Something I have to witness. Then I’ll decide.” “Is there no way I can help you?” “I don’t think so, honey.” “If it turns out I can—” “Thanks,” I said. “I appreciate that. And you really will marry me?” “Now that I know your name is Jake? Of course.”

I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and took my time reading it. I could "hear" Mr. King's "voice" in my head as I read this on my iPad Kindle app. I felt like I was reading something from a friend---as if he had written a personal letter to me--- to give me an understanding of what he went through to become the person he is today. I think that his directives about the "how-to's" and "don't do's" were very practical. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got the feeling that writing classes and clubs are kind of a waste of time. Just write, is what I think he was telling me, I mean, his audience. I will probably read it again. What I got from his personal, real-life-lessons is this: Read a lot. Read good stuff. Write all the time. Find a place and write. Don't share your stuff unless you share it with someone you can trust. Go with your gut. Write all the time (I said that already because he said it or inferred it frequently). Don't use the same adjective over and over. Stick to the point. Don't over-do it on the descriptions. Let your audience see the movie you see in your head, because if you write it well, they will. I am glad this wasn't a "point by point HOW TO WRITE a story or a book" book, because really, writing isn't something you can do easily from a bulleted list. Writing is something you do from your heart, and you keep doing it until it's right and good. And then when that person you trust reads your stuff and offers some criticism, you can take it for what it's worth and use it or not.

I purchased this book because the description stated that it contained all 4 books including Rage. What a disappointment to receive the book and open it to find that it includes only 3 of the 4 books... no Rage! If you are looking to complete your stephen king collection, avoid this copy! Incredibly frustrated buyer!

The main reason I bought this book was that the description said that it included the story "Rage". I was dying to read that, and the other three stories would be a bonus. Well, what a major disappointment to receive the book and find that "Rage" is not included. There are three stories, not four, and I will be returning this book due to false advertising. Very, very disappointed.

Some books I rate with 5 stars just because of my pleasure in the story. These aren't always well-written or creative, or something someone else would like. Then there are those books that are so well-crafted, not just with character development or storytelling but in the writing itself. This is one of those books. I've always given Stephen King credit as the "king of the flashback" and here he gives us some of what he does best, but he also shows again his ability to get inside the head of the character in the present. From making up lyrics to songs sung by a fictional boy band and the brand names of fictional ice cream treats, to details of a Midwestern city that make those of us living in Midwestern cities think ours is the one in the story. I wondered in the beginning of the book if King was making a game in paying homage to himself with hints he dropped to reference some of his previous best sellers, but he played this game for just a short while. There are plenty of other pop-culture references in the minds of the various characters that do well to establish their ages and backgrounds. As the story unwinds after the climactic events, my emotions surprised me. I've cried while reading books before, but not while reading the words of a bureaucratic proclamation!

I have been an on-again, off-again reader of Stephen King’s over the last decade or so (I was more loyal prior to that time) as sometimes I like his stuff and sometimes I don’t. The last one I read was the awful "Under the Dome," which was long, pointless and ultimately just silly, and I wasn’t thinking of reading anything else by him until I read a couple of reviews by Charles de Lint in a recent Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I trust Mr. de Lint’s tastes, so when he praised "Mr. Mercedes" and its follow-up, I figured I’d give them a try. Mr. Mercedes is the nickname given to a man who stole a car (guess what make) and plowed into a group of job seekers standing outside a building waiting for a job fair, killing 8 and wounding many others. Recently retired cop Bill Hodges has been drifting since his retirement, regretting that he didn’t catch certain bad guys, including Mr. Mercedes, but when he receives a letter purporting to be from the villain, instead of succumbing to depression as the writer intended, he begins to investigate. And, of course, the investigation just becomes more and more dangerous as he continues to delve into the mystery…. The reader knows who the culprit is from early on in the book, so the appeal is following the cat-and-mouse hunt as the suspense builds. King is as good as he ever was with respect to his characters and plotting, and he’s always great with the gross-out scenes (which here are not too many, thankfully). This turns out to be the first book in a trilogy, and I’ve already picked up the second, "Finder’s Keepers," with the third due out in mid-2016. Fast-paced popcorn reading, "Mr. Mercedes" just hits the spot; recommended!

People of faith often believe that they must muzzle their emotions, particularly the negative ones like anger, guilt, and shame. But UNTANGLING EMOTIONS explains that even the negative emotions do have a purpose, and that Christ and God felt/feel emotions, too; the key is understanding the why and how of emotions and expressing them appropriately. In other words, even people of faith aren’t all happy all the time. They get angry or sad, too, but they can learn how to express that anger appropriately. (Aren’t there passages in the Bible when Jesus himself was very angry or in deep grief?) J. Alasdair Groves and Winston T. Smith wrote this relatively brief book discussing this very topic. Their style is simple, very approachable, engaging, and well-organized. There are Bible citations (English Standard Version only, thank you!), citations from other sources, as well as interesting anecdotes supporting their claims and giving both positive and negative examples. Some of the anecdotes are personal; when the authors do go into first person (“I”), it is clear which one of them the “I” is, Alasdair or Winston. Most of the chapters end with questions for reflection, making this an excellent book for either group or personal study; I highly recommend this book for church libraries.

Emotions are all the rage today, from "doing what feels right" to "getting in touch with your emotions." From a Christian point of view, the questions are these: What should we think about our emotions, and what should we do with them? This book, "Untangling Emotions," answers these two questions and gives more wise information about human emotions. In the first part of the book, the authors talk about the fact that emotions are part of being human and aren't necessarily bad. They also note that emotions are complex and they typically have to do with things we love, value, and treasure (p. 35). I appreciate how the authors also mentioned that emotions are a necessary part of relationships. In the second part of the book, the authors talk about engaging our emotions. There's a balance: emotions shouldn't rule us, nor should we totally ignore our emotions. Instead, we should engage them, ask questions of them, take them to God, nourish healthy emotions, and starve unhealthy emotions. In the last part of the book the authors put these principles to use by discussing the emotions of fear, anger, grief, and guilt. It's sort of the "practical application" section of the book.I did appreciate and enjoy this book. It's not a deep Ph.D. level study of emotions, nor is it an exegetical resource to study emotions that show up in Scripture. Instead, it's the insights of two wise Christian counselors/pastors reflecting systematically and biblically on the topic of emotions. My only slight critique of the book is that it sometimes is a bit wordy for my taste. That is, sometimes the authors explained a relatively simple concept in several pages when they could've done so on one page. Again, it's a minor critique but it's something I noticed. No big deal, though - this is a helpful book and I recommend it!

God created us as emotional beings after his own image. IN way too many sermons and books, emotions were treated as something that should be submitted to the ratio, will, or Jesus Christ's, as if they don't matter and Christians should strive to become balanced, moderate, and emotional flat. In Untangling Emotions, J. Alasdair Groves & Winston T. Smith draw different conclusions. Circumstances and feelings shouldn't reign, but emotions are real. It's how we act or fuel our emotions that can make a difference. Think of anger management, accept and offer forgiveness instead of indulging in shame and guilt, and forest the fruit of the Holy Spirit amidst adverse situations or emotions. The authors untangle different emotions, from grief and anger to joy and plea for a conscious way to respond to your emotions, including how you feel about how you feel. It is of vital importance to your relationship with God and others in your life. Our emotions are one of the most common and commonly misunderstood opportunities in our lives to grow in maturity and love.Emotions happen in our body, yet we live in a historical moment where the tendency is to overstate the role of the body. Our souls and flesh are interwoven. Understanding the mechanics of the brain is not the same as understanding how to live rightly before the Lord. We were made to respond with love for what is good and hatred for what is evil. No matter how much we come to understand the biology of our brains, we will still always need to wrestle with our emotions as expressions of what we love. Helping your respond with godly maturity to your emotions, good, bad and ugly, is the core message of this book, that involves a lot of theology and less on neuroscience.

#368,150 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I just read the book ... and am totally disappointed. I am Swiss and have been living in the US since 1995. I don't like her lack of knowledge and how she portrays Americans and on a very personal note ... I find it utterly exhausting to be a French woman if she accurately assesses her fellow countrywomen. I would NOT buy the book again and it turned me off to read any other book she has written before. I am 60 and the title let me think that this book is all about the little secrets of French women without using all the botox, brand names skin care, etc. That is clearly not the case.

Ms. Guiliano seems to have gotten a bit complacent about her responsibility to her readers on this one, and I'm really surprised that her editors didn't hold her to a higher standard. French Women Don't Get Fat was a great read, choc full of specific, helpful tips, anecdotes that readers could relate to, even recipes. French Women Don't Get Facelifts is a chore to read. It doesn't flow well, and the thoughts are poorly organized, as if they had been jotted down on airplane cocktail napkins and typed up by an assistant. And the content itself is, well, so basic and trite as to be pretty much worthless. What happened? Not sure, but I really regret having spent money on this book. There's nothing here but Ms. Guiliano's brand, and she isn't doing it any favors. She really should have worked harder for her readers.

I enjoy reading anything Mireille Giuliano writes and according to this recent addition to her lineup, she is obligated by her publisher for another book beyond this one, which I will look forward to reading. I have a copy of all her previous offerings and look upon time spent with one of her chatty books as a pleasant part of my day. That being said, I got the impression this book was rather hurriedly dashed off between intercontinental trips. It seemed to hit the high spots, wasn’t much on detail, and although I can understand a rehash of some of her previous material for the benefit of new readers, I also felt she relied too heavily on past efforts. Frankly, I expected, and hoped for, a little more. So much more could have been done with this book, that would have been helpful, and a number of opportunities were missed to expand what it had to offer. I sincerely hope that her next book will not be a rehash of past material with a different title. My comments follow.Exercise: Walk, swim, climb stairs, do some yoga. All from previous books. Although she admits to now having added some Pilates exercises to the mix which she does at home, and mentioned strength training, she does not share her new found knowledge or anything of her personal routine with us. Disappointing. The most worthwhile part of this section was a detailed instruction regarding four yoga breathing exercises, which was very well done. Everything else was short on detail, hit the high spots.Diet: The author’s personal diet appears to be primarily vegetable, low protein, low carb, low calorie, heavy on dairy using that for a lot of the protein, which would not set well with a goodly percentage of the readership. The only alternative suggested was to eat Mediterranean, which we have been hearing from a variety of sources for the past 20-30 years.Recipes: This book has fewer recipes than any of her others, so there is not much in that department to whet anticipation.Makeup and Hair: Useful admonition to look appropriate for one’s age instead of like a circus clown with things that are too obvious, amusing anecdote to illustrate this. Typical advice from previous books to get a good, professional haircut several times a year, as well as professional color if gray is not for you.Supplements: Author displays fearfulness and lack of knowledge in this department. Could have done without this totally useless chapter that espouses the 1920’s ideal of getting everything from one’s food, and says nothing about the European bans on GMOs; organics, depleted soil and comparisons of nutritional value in food from 50 years ago versus today.Facelifts: Part of the title of the book and this chapter could be boiled down to, don’t get one because it won’t match the rest of you, just use creams and lotions the way my mother and grandmother did and you’ll be fine. To be perfectly honest, Raquel Welch’s book, which is available on Amazon, did a much better, more informative job with more detailed information on this subject, and I highly recommend it, Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage.Employment: Although a minor section toward the end, rather an afterthought, it should not have been included due to the lack of knowledge on the part of the author of the hardships the majority of people 50 and over face in the U.S. regarding employment during these times. I can understand that because the author’s life and finances insulate her from harsher realities, and this is part of the charm of her writing; however, it would also have been best to leave this bit out altogether.Advice from older women of her acquaintance: This is definitely an area of missed opportunity. These wise, elderly ladies of class and substance were briefly mentioned, all too briefly quoted, and served only to whet the appetite for an entrée that never appeared.

I absolutely adore Mireilles other books. I really do believe her culinary and diet/lifestyle tools are her forte. I ordered this book with the confidence of loving and owning her other three books. I have just finished reading the book and ended the last 20% of the book just flicking and skimming the pages. Her advice is very general and not at all specific like her previous. Like her other reads, I was expecting some real pearls of wisdom - best kept secrets! They did not exist. Just general talk about thing we really know. Dare I say it, I found the book even boring in most areas. I would not purchase this as a gift for a friend. There are much better beauty books out there! What a shame and a disappointment this book was...!

After Reading this book, I felt so much better about myself and learned a few tips and tricks to make myself feel so much better about my age and my face and my body. Thanks for such an enjoyable read. I definetely recommend this book for any women who may be feeling a little down about herself. This book will definetely pick your spirits up.

Excellent book. Very informative I have it in audio but I had to get the book because there is so much helpful information that I want to mark the pages and go back to it occasionally. I have also tried some of her recipes and they are actually very good. Its a great read for women of a certain age.

I liked this book very much because I'm directly affected by her advise and suggestions, if I take them. Mireille Guiliano is an excellent author. I loved her first book, French Women don't get fat and the logic behind the style of the French women and their everyday lives. They seem to evoke a "flair" that keeps them interesting and "alive". There are many good suggestions to help us in aging.

This is an enjoyable read. I like all the writers' work, but this does not really shed any light on anything new. Read it for enjoyment rather than any other reason...

Review

“Rarely are questions of faith genuinely debated with the kind of sincerity, insight, and compassion presented in Tony and Bart Campolo’s thoughtful new book. We can all be grateful this isn’t just a family discussion.” (Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy)“A love story for our time. One of the most honest books of this generation.” (Kenda Creasy Dean, dean of Princeton Theological Seminary and author of Almost Christian)“An indispensable treatise of hope and transformation. In an age when the fastest growing religious demographic in the United States are those who are not formally affiliated with religion, Tony and Bart provide us all with a model for how we engage, interrogate, and reconcile our similarities and differences.” (Varun Soni, Dean of Religious Life, University of Southern California)“Bart’s journey—and especially the amazing relationship he’s forged with his superstar preacher dad—will delight anyone looking for an example of how to live a beautiful and good life without God. Tony’s response—to honestly engage without attacking—is equally inspiring.” (Greg M. Epstein, Humanist Chaplain at Harvard University)“An intellectual feast, an example, and a window into robust expressions of both evangelicalism and humanism. This is an important book for our times. Please read it.” (Rev. Dr. David P. Gushee, author of Changing Our Mind)“The Campolos have done us all a huge favor by discussing their differences right here in the open. A remarkable book.” (Hemant Mehta, editor of FriendlyAtheist.com)“Bold. Gripping. Brutally honest.” (Ronald J. Sider, Palmer Seminary at Eastern University)“This book offers a model that could bring healing to many torn relationships--a thoughtful dialogue into which people from across the spiritual spectrum can enter.” (Lynne Hybels, Willow Creek Community Church)“[Tony Campolo is] one of the most important evangelical Christian preachers of the last 50 years, a prolific author and an erstwhile spiritual adviser to Bill Clinton.” (New York Times)“[Bart Campolo] is a rising star of atheism.” (New York Times)

// THE SHORT:I think this book could be useful for people who were previously Christian (and now find themselves in the atheist/secular humanist camp) to share with their Christian parents and/or friends as a means of starting and/or guiding a conversation (if they do not know how to have one). It's focus is on loving each other, dialog, and the importance of being open to another's journey, even when you disagree.// THE LONG:Having been a pastor and now finding myself outside of faith, I can understand both of these men's stories and words very well. In fact, I use to read Tony's work (and was a fan). However, I found myself somewhat upset by Tony and his approach. It often seemed that he had not actually heard Bart's concerns or even addressed them. Moreover, where Bart brings up good points (he or other atheist writers), Tony agrees with them and then adds a Christian story to it (but not necessarily a Biblical one). Sometimes in a pretty condescending and unhelpful way. Some of Tony's phrases, which group all non-theists together in broad strokes, often show he has less understanding of the subject than he might claim.I think it was designed for Bart to be able to give a decent intro to humanism in a context that was somewhat non-threatening to Christians reading it (because, if something challenged you, don't worry, the next chapter will affirm a pretty standard Christian orthodoxy for you to relax back into). It also gave Tony a chance to preach the Gospel in case those who left Christianity hadn't maybe heard it the 'right way' (so to say).Again, while I do appreciate the focus on doing this in love, and think it is a good place to start, it has not actually addressed the issues well and might lull some parents into thinking they do not have to think through their kid's thoughts. I fear they will think, "Well, Tony addressed these so I don't have to."However, Tony's biggest issue (his consistent use of the argument from ignorance fallacy ["We don't know yet, therefore God" OR "it's not been shown to be false, so it's true"]) can quickly be pointed out in a true dialog and will leave many parents unprepared to continue the conversation (and might put them on the defensive quickly).Even if it's all done in love.Overall, I do recommend it. If nothing else but to support people attempting to have a civil conversation and address an increasingly common need.// TO THE CHRISTIANS READING THIS BOOK:I invite you to really try to hear Bart's thoughts and comments and do your best to understand them. They aren't fully addressed by Tony and you will want to understand Bart's position better before you try and have more conversation.Ask questions of your unbelieving child to get them to express their thoughts (and see if they are similar or different from Bart's). Remember, they have probably heard the arguments you have said before that made them believe once before. Repeating them again now, without understanding their position, won't be helpful (and will turn them away more).// TO THE NON-CHRISTIANSBe kind. Be patient. I was upset with Tony a few times as he misrepresented many things (science, logic, belief, etc.) but I want to make sure that when talking with my parents I am not as emotional. Brush up on logic and have a good understanding of what you know and don't be afraid to say "I do not know" when you get into the converasation. As a Christian, I was basically taught to have an asnwer to evertyhing. Now, I don't have it. It's much more freeing.

The purpose of this book is simply each telling their stories of how they got to where they are, and the reasons they are where they are. It is not an apologetic book by either side, though each does give some of their reasons for holding to the belief system they have chosen for finding purpose in life. What makes the book unique from the vast majority is that it is truly written with love from both sides in which the goal is to listen to each other, and when they express their perspectives, it is not done in a judgmental way upon the other. As one who has stayed believing in Jesus as being God come to earth, I identified with several of Tony's thoughts, and mostly that what keeps us in this life of faith is our experiences of hope. Tony does not approach defending Christianity as an apologist in this book, which from some of the reviews, it seems is seen as lacking logic. While there are reasons to find the Christian story believable, there are equal number of reason to not find it believable, and there are countless books that debate faith from that perspective. This is not one of them. And to me, that God would love the messed up human race is beyond reason and logic, so I find it refreshing that Tony does not take this approach. His goal is not to make an airtight argument for faith in the Christian story; simply telling his story of what keeps him believing.Bart likewise does not attempt to make an exhaustive attempt to make a secular humanist out of the readers of the book either. In his work at USC, he does not feel compelled to pull people away from following Jesus who are loving their neighbors as themselves. While he does utilize more of science in his reasons than his dad in this book, it is because that is part of his story, but the main part of his story is that it is one of loving our neighbors as ourselves, or doing unto others as we would have them do to us. This is the story he heard as a child from his dad, and saw his dad live according to what he preached, and from that he has not left - he has found as much reason to love like this within secular humanism, and to him it is more freeing in the belief system he now embraces. He did not convince me to become a secular humanist, but he explained it better than I have seen in explained before - story has a way of doing that.Story - that is probably what I like best about the book. Neither is preaching; just telling their stories.

I have been listening to Bart Campolo's "Humanize Me" podcast for the last year and I absolutely appreciate Bart's authenticity and lack of anger. There are too many angry atheists in the world, and I feel as though this book is grounded in love. I definitively left Christianity in May of 2016 and I am not sure if this book provides a balanced viewpoint between secularism and Christianity but it certainly attempts the feat. In my opinion, Tony's arguments are arcane and also based on his "feelings" while I feel as though Bart's arguments are grounded in meaningful thought, logic, and he exposes the hypocrisy and contradictions behind Christianity and their sacred book of the Bible. However, this book is grounded in love and I find myself being less judgmental of Christians, as they are being guided by a book that is full of contradiction, and listen to preachers that inform them as to how they should "think". I believe Karl Marx was spot on when he said that religion is the opiate of the masses. As far as my own personal beliefs, I do not identify as an atheist or an agnostic. I do believe there is a "life force" that created the universe. I do not like attributing the word "God" to this "life force" as I believe that the term conjures up too many images and manifestations. I believe this "life force" is grounded in love but set the world in motion, and does not interact with its creation. I suppose that makes me more of a deist, although the verdict is still out as to whether or not I believe in an afterlife.Getting back to the book, I do believe Bart makes highly valid points as to why he left Christianity at the age of 50 and I highly recommend this book as it may give insight for extended family members as to why one is Christian or not, if one wishes to bring up faith with family that may believe otherwise.
